GodSchubertPlayedByGodKempff. There really is no other Schubert but Kempff. A little Perfume, hardly any drama and simplicity at the most mesmerizing way possible. John Rockwell of the NYTimes wrote long time ago the best article about Schubert/Kempff
People have always struggled to define or understand what it is "musicality". Listen to this and you know. This level of sublime playing can only be reached by a very, very small number of people, with highly unique minds, personalities and life histories, and can therefore never be taught, learned, let alone imitated.
Alfred Brendel (no less!) "When he (Kempff) is playing well, he plays better than any of us." He is my sentimental favourite simply because his recordings were the first I heard of serious piano music when I was a youth, and records, being expensive, were played over and over - you couldn't afford more very often! But then came Rubinstein, Brendel,Richter, Cziffra, Madam De la Rocha, Katchen, and they all seemed to mutually excel each other. Eye-opening for an impressionable teen.
I agree; i.e. Mr. Kempff is a God of interpretation of any composer I have heard him play. His piano is truly superb to almost any I have listend to: I mean his ability at the keyboard and the instrument he is playing on. I would like to play that piano some day. I will always look for recordings by Mr. Kempff first!
The true Wanderer. Best Schubert ever ! No musician managed to reach that alchemy. No matter the speed or whatever. Listen to the poetry, the discovery of nature, sense, sensibility always reinvented. A true Wunder!
Too rushed?? Too fast?? Are you serious? This is a God of the keyboard and just because your tastes in speed differ from his it means very little. Just listen to some other virtuoso more in line with your own ideas. Nevertheless this man's learned and superb interpretation stands as a superb example. I am a Richter "fan" and adore his interpretation of this,,BUT I still recognize the superb quality of Kempff. I agree with the comment of "EIEsquisProductions". Thanks for posting,,
@CHEEBUK I'm also looking for the Paris-Version of op.120. It disappeared from youtube, where i discovered it ca. 2 years ago. It is simply marvellous and one of the best Schubert-recordings I ever heard. Does anybody know how to find it...? Thanks a lot!

I agree with henrysthingamajig. Too fast.
Compare Wilhelm Kempff to the reflective beauty of Richter's version.
Also Richter's version does not have one note of "connective" tissue"

Extremely beautiful. After Myra Hess, I think this is my favorite recording of the Sonata.
This was the first Schubert I played, about 40 years ago, and it's like a First Love to me.
