  • I was back at Miramar in '83 working in supply on base and waiting on my (ex)husband to get home with VAW-112. Man, the WESTPAC from hell! The fire was just a few days in right? Bless the 9 and their families. Hawaii(got a t-shirt), PI(got a new wedding band on the second stop), IO(scary as hell)-2 beer ration days right? and home(got a baby girl nine months later :) I saw real NASTY(what was that green shit?) POLLYWOG pics LOL-!! SOOO damn glad to see you squidleys still around!!

  • AS WE ALWAYS SAID , GOD DAMN AIRDALES ! AND ON A SOBER NOTE GOD BLESS THE MEN WHO DIED IN THAT CLASS BRAVO FIRE !

  • I was a Snipe in 3MMR when that fire happened. Lost two friends that died in that 4MMR fire. Bad WestPac too. Two ports and back home after 121 days at sea. I miss that ship though!

  • VF-1 Wolfpack 1987-1989

  • My grandfather Rear Admiral William H. Livingston(Tag) was captain of USS RANGER (CVA-61) in 1969!

  • V-2 gear rat myself. 82-86, worst west pac ever. We lost nine sailors, suffered a major fire, ran into the USS Witchita while on-reping, spent 121 days straight in the I.O. and in nine months saw two ports Havaii, and the Phillipines twice each. It was definetley a "HAZE GREY AND UNDERWAY" trip and the one that stands out in my mind the most.

  • I was on Ranger from 1976- 1980 V-2 division. Lotsa pot smokin then.

  • I was w VF-2 85-87.. in the line shack.... it was a great tour

  • I was on the Ranger with VF-2, (1985-87). I was an AMS-1 then.

  • G Div 69-71

  • Arresting Gear 1974-1977 Jim "JJ" Gardner Alameda, San Diego, and Bremerton 2 West-Pacs.

  • First name Phil ?

  • I sleep right under the #2 wire dead center. My ears still ringing to this day. I still can tell whose landing between the F-14, A-6s ,Shitcans,Queers,Hummer or cods. 86-90....V-1 rules

  • I served on the USS Ranger CVA-61 from Aug 1983 to Sept 1986. I was assigned to G3 Flight Deck Ordanance. I boarded Ranger as an Ordananceman 3rd Class Petty Officer and left the ship as a First Class Master At Arms.

  • My brother served on the USS Ranger CV-61 from I believe 88-91 as an ATC. The first night of Desert Storm he said was hell. Thanks to all our Men & Women serving & those who have served..

  • 1/3 of your video were taken from the movie "Top Gun" and "The Final Countdown".

  • @abeamarra Where do you think they filmed those movies? I'll give you one hint, it was CV-61.

  • My hubby (Randy "Kobey" Coburn) served aboard the Ranger 1985-1988 VS-38 Fighting Red Griffins...WOOT!!! He's still a Fighting Red Griffin and a Fighting Red Griffin he'll always be....God Bless The United States Navy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @griffinwife Ask him if he knew a petty officer by the name of McCracken. That guy was a friend of mine, and I've lost track of him. He worked flight crew on the hoovers doing the snoop-n-poop on the subs with the MAD Boom.

  • My dad is a vietnam veteran on this ship,David "robin"Robinson. He has told me so many stories about the Philipines or however you spell it. He said they used to play the lone ranger coming in to every port.you fuck up in the philipines and he said they would put a box on your head, fill it with rats and throw you in shit river. the rats frenzied fight for life would shred your face

  • VAQ-131 1987/88 Gonzo Station, Gulf of Oman

  • @TejasBob I was right there with you on Gonzo Station that year. I worked in Corrosion Control in VMA(AW) -121

  • @Stentor7 who are you? I also worked in corrosion control and also com/nav. I was with 121 from 86 until we we went to f-18 school.

  • Lots of memories, good and bad lol. VA-145 from 85-88

  • @zthang I was in the Marine Corps squadron on that West Pac in 87. Were you in the berthing space forward on the 01 deck? My rack was right by our TV room.

  • @Stentor7 Yes, I was in the 75 man berthing area forward right under the cats.

  • @zthang Remember doing the Fallon Shuffle back in December of 86? Then we got tapped to go do the Team Spirit because the Midway crapped out on sea trials? I was bumming that year. Thought I joined the Marine Corps, found out I'd joined the Navy by mistake. I had 275 days of sea time that year after WestPac was over.

  • My dad was on this ship during vietnam

  • I was there to.I remember that fire and the loss of those shipmates.

  • 82-85 rangerman holesnipe so I seen alot of bad things. lost friends 2 a engine room fire that i was injured from fightin it, and saw many other things that no 1 cares 2 discuess but still see it all ,as treasureable

  • I think the aircraft carrier is almost undefeatable. If im right that aircraft carrier got few battleships with them, and maybe few submarines to. They have missiles to launch and the planes against the enemy.

  • WESTPAC 70-71 with Rvah1 Tigers/ Vigilantes. In was in the jet shop & we had custody of the plastic horse "Silver". One night while in Subic the Aussie destroyer in front of us sent a couple of guys over and they were making thier way to the bow on the flight deck with "Silver" in tow when the Marine Detachment caught up to them. They dove off the deck and swam back to the Destroyer. There is a war story that probably doesn't deserve to be told!

  • MM3 Christofer Halldorson, P-4 Div. #2 Aux Mach Rm. Rangerman from '76, to '80 I would love to visit her again someday...

  • Top Gun Bar None! i was on board ranger from '89 to '91. we flew more missions in desert storm than any aircraft carrier. I was in the medical department. i miss everyone there - gonzo, solorio, bergstrom, mikeymoshe... everybody. i love you all. the museum is needed. i support this idea.

  • me too what div.? I was in V-5

  • I was on board the same years in OI -

    OS2 AIC

  • cool

  • David G. Smith "Smitty Built" Rangerman 1984-86, P-3 and X-4 Div.s

    top gun bar none.

  • Thanks for posting. I was on board 90-91 G-3 Mag Rats.

  • This is a good video but it lacks the one much needed element. Narration. To people not familiar with Ranger, narration would explain what is going on and why the museum is needed. JM, if you used Windows Movie Maker or any other good software, it would be easy for you to go back and interject "voice over narration." Do it, it is much needed for clarity of purpose and remove it from "just another video."

    BruceW

    Ranger 1957-58

    Plankowner

  • That was my home away from my other

  • my grandfather was on the Ranger in WWII, this is cool!

  • @diggindis That was actually the prior incarnation of that ship, the ninth USS Ranger CV-4, and was decommissioned shortly after the end of WWII, and sold for scrap in 1947. The one that was built in succession the tenth USS Ranger CV-61, as a true aircraft carrier wasn't commissioned until 1957 as part of the next wave of Forestal class supercarriers.

  • Very good presentation. TG-0

Ranger in Portland makes a lot of sense, we need this in the Pacific Northwest not in So. Cal. Midway and Hornet are already there.

What does it take to get Portland to see the benefits of tourism and financial gain for the City?

  • Well I have to agree with you, we do have The Midway in San Diego, but the Hornet is not in SO.CAL.

  • My dad was a MMOW on the Ranger during the reagan era and even though it did the whole West Pac thing, i think they should put it over here in Baltimore. There's really only one carrier over here as a museum and that's the Intrepid.
