i'm pretty sure this song was made before his mother died. the cd ash wednsday was arranged in chronilogical order and this song is the 1st on the album. the meaning is just a really unfortunate coincidence.
To elaborate on my comment...I just don't get it, to me it's trust fund rock. I saw him play Siren this past summer and to me there was nothing there! No personality on stage, he just stood there and played and that made the songs extra boring. Dylan..this guy ain't!
it misses the best part :"full of dreams you overslept and keeping with the quiet through the walls i crept. i walk on tiptoe send darkness swirling over all the kitchen in the early morning. i never catch up to you who sleep so sound my arms are useless, my heart beats too loud to go to sleep, my mind's too crowded..."
such a sweet and wonderful words....this guy is absolutely lovely!!!!
This version is better than the studio recording. Not so country, for people who dont like country
And by the way who cares if it is about the 9/11 attacks? You have ruined the image I had that it was about me seeing my girl when she is dreaming at night, right next to me
What image is more universal, intimate and personal? Who cares about the exact meaning of a song or the moment in which it was written?
i agree with Strummer. and to the people who keep arguing, you are all ridiculous. This is you "blah blah i know more about (insert topic) than you blah blah i am an elitist asshole"

I've listened to another live version of this song as well as the studio version, but I adore this clip. Perhaps I'm just biased, as seeing this air over the summer was the first I'd heard of Elvis Perkins. *shrugs*
Saw him with Clap Your Hands and Cold War Kids in Birmingham earlier this year. He started with this song, and even though had never heard of him before, I fell in love with it immediately
Saw him again at Latitude festival in July and he was even better
There seems to be a bit of debate about this song. Let me clear it up for you all so you can go about your respective days: it's genius. Now, off you go.
The melody and chords are good. The only problem I have with this performance is the theatrics. I mean just stand on the stage until your part. Other than that I think this is really engaging as a song. You kinda get lost in his voice and the rhythm section really helps to drive home the chords.
the first time i heard this song, i had an amazing experience, i just knew it was the most revelotionary thingi had heard in years. Elvis Perkins is going to be a cult legend
CDSRox, you don't know shit. Everyone else, if you like this song, PLEASE buy the album. The version of this song on the album is almost twice as long as this one. Also, as of now you can download an alternate (full length) version of While You Were Sleeping on Myspace if you search music for Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Thanks, and happy listening.
I was there at the taping, and Dave, Paul and his band *sincerely* had a awesome response to the band. Paul and the guys went crazy for it musically (the bassist was nuts about Nick Kinsey the drummer playing harmonica while he drummed) but it really seemed like Dave was digging it while they played and then relieved that it was the one thing that went perfectly during what had been a mess of the show.
man this was good. i bet dave and the audience didn't know what to expect and were very pleasantly surprised.

what is this song's deeper meaning?
witherwings14 3 years ago
it's about his mother's death, she died in the plane accident of 9/11. But the lyrics are quite implicit : )

Tedious. Monotonous. Crap.
tmick7 4 years ago
that quite folky, and folk is monotone, so it needs a haunting melody and that song DOES HAVE a haunting melody, it's a masterpiece

Whats that meant to mean? Anthony Perkins was a great man.
Nixonboy06 4 years ago
I'm sure you meant well, but to refer to him as the "son of Norman Bates" is a bit disrespectful to both of them.
