@chaksheba. Ya know, that's a problem I seem to have, and it kind of improves in tiny bits each time I perform, but I definitely felt that. Usually, I'm fine with accepting that I'm an alright vocalist and actor, but when it comes to performing, I need to loosen up alot.
I think the main singer in this part of the show needs more energy. I like the vocals. It was great but the energy and actions were so stiff..THis should be a really playful over the top song. But it fell flat.
My concern with Stone's speaking voice is exactly that it is not his real voice. Why wouldn't he attempt to sound like a typical tough hard-boiled detective?
The choreography is distracting more than anything, because of the small amount of space around Stone. They could have used the gurney and almost treated it like a fourth member of the group, pushing it around and including it in the movement. A fine production I saw once did that, and it was hilarious.
I really didn't mean to offend, just commenting on what I saw based on what I know of the show. I have 20some years of experience directing, musical directing, acting and singing, and I'm not conceited about it-- I just would have expected more as a director. Don't know your group but would enjoy seeing more of what you did with this great show.
Much of the musical number takes place out of the light. The guy playing Stone has a pretty nerdy speaking voice and his acting lacks charisma. This song has been re-arranged for a back-up of three women instead of men, and the male singer isn't strong enough to carry it, as evidenced by the finale, in which he should be belting at the top of his range. The choreography, such as it is, could be so much more engaging and fun, but it's all centered around Stone and is amateurish.
I was in this production (I'm not in this video however) and this number was an audience favorite every night. I respect your opinion, but may I ask what you would suggest as far as better choreography? We had a very small space to work with so I found the choregraphy quite clever considering. Also, It's community theatre so we have way more girls than guys who audition, hence the gender switch. And for the record, that's not the actor's real speaking voice.
Admittedly this was not one of my favorite nights doing it, especially because it was so early in the game and due to availability we didn't get to rehearse this number too much. It's gotten stronger, but in response to amateurish, I'm glad you were voted on as a judge of everyone's efforts. ^_^

Fair enough. You make valid points, so I'm not going to argue them, I understand obviously not everyone's going to be a fan of our production. =)

I understand your concerns with it, and thank you for explaining your first comment.
As for Stone's voice, Jeff was portraying a Humphrey Bogart type of character.

Yikes.
