I have to admit that guy looks alot like how they drew Rincewind in the orginal Discworld game, which is also how I always pictured him of course the game was what originally got me into Discworld
Also I love how if you look at it at the end of it, Terry is rolling with intense laughter and joy. Hahahaa what a thrill this bit must have been for him!
The guy in this film would have been great in the recent adaptation of Colour of Magic. At least, he looks a lot closer to the Rincewind in my head. I don't have anything against the actor Sky TV chose, but I imagine Rincewind as younger.
@BelovedBitterSea Sky didn't have a choice, david jason funded the prodject and basically got to pick is role. pretty much everyone agrees he was to old to be rincewind
@BelovedBitterSea I totally agree! I thought he did an amazing job portraying Rincewind, but it was difficult to get over the visual. I have always pictured Rincewind as a younger, lanky, awkward man.
@BelovedBitterSea Yeah, me too. I mean the guy who played him was good, but he was a nearly 70-year-old man playing a guy who was supposed to be around 30 or 40 (as I remember).
@FireofSekhmet Yeah my wife and I are huge Disc fans and while we genuinely loved the Sky adaptations, we really felt Rincewind was portrayed as far too old.
I have two criticisms of this. The roaming around in the city bit was a bit too long. And the video overall was too short. About ten more minutes would be better for a video, though it's suited for the occasion it was meant for.
That said, this was a very amusing piece. I liked the opening and closing scenes.
To the person who was insulting us Discworld and Rincewind fans... 'Bugger off'.
Superbly lame and the end where Rincewind rushes in to the room is just embarrassing. The ratings prove that Terry Pratchett fans are nerds. Which isnt necessarely a bad thing.
hm. maybe thats a point of interpretation and your phantasy isn´t it?
maybe i´ve read another book but in my memory he was described as skinny and younger than the other wizards.
niargh whatever...
he looks like the pictures paul kidby has painted of rincewind so i think thats the reason why he looks what he looks like in this two shortfilms i´ve found.
Speaking of which, in The Art of The Discworld book, Pratchett says that Rincewind is one of the characters Paul Kidby get's spot on and that Rincewind in XXXX (the painting is on that page) is 'exactly right'. :-)
Wahahahahaha!!!! That was brilliant! Rincewind was PERFECT! While I admire David Jason & his work, I tend to keep remembering it's only a movie because he's so recognisable. This Rincewind, on the other hand, WAS Rincewind. The whole short was extremely well done. I really enjoyed the parent & child applauding Rincewind's escape from the red sticks. Long may you prosper.
This is, without a doubt, the most brilliant Discworld-related film EVER. That moment at the end where he puts the hat on PTerry's head to match him to the picture is PRICELESS.
I have to wonder how much of a thrill it must have been for Terry to essentially be confronted by his 'actual' character, since the performer to perfectly captured Rincewind. He basically WAS Rincewind in this performance. Everything he does seems like something the Wizzard would do, right down to him feeling self-important and striding out.
Cool. I wish I had a Rincewind costume so I could run through the town wearing it. He's my favourite character with the possible exception of the Nac Mac Feegles.
As a huge fan of Terry Pratchett and Discworld, that was brilliant in every way possible. The acting, the editing, everything. Just fantastic. Huge props to Troy Larkin especially who didn't just play Rincewind, he WAS Rincewind. I love it!
thats brilliant has a flaver off Monty Python and it very funny and the actors in this should be brought on to the silver screen and more off the discworld i think should be!
This is what every author fears, dreads, hopes for and delights in, to one day be face to face with one's creation and find out it wasn't all in your head.
This video definitely has rocks in. :) Bless T. Pratchett - "It's him!" As for Troy Larkin, he's everything I've ever imagined Rincewind would be and even more manic. </:)}
Absolutely fantastic, best performance of Rincewind so far.
I find it awesome on that Pratchett finds to spend so much time with the fans, you would think someone with his schedule wouldn't be able to do so. Still for some reason he knows to pull it off, the guy is so great with the fan community, each time you meet him is a fantastic experience that is never the same.
Fantastic! These two little films are great. Thought whoever played rincewind got the characterisation perfect and the ending was blooming brilliant! Classic.
I went to the first Australian Discworld Convention and got to see this opening ceremony first hand. It was awesome!!!! I was immensely awed (ergo, speechless and incredibly clumsy) by Terry Pratchett's presence, but I still got to have a great time and interract with other Pratchett fans! Tash, you should've been in Melbourne to do this with me!
PS. You know what T. Pratchett says about four exclamation marks.... ;)
I laughed like mad at the dad with the pushchair clapping at Rincewind escaping the mysterious red thing nearly four minutes in.
