So Alan Wake is just microsoft's attempt to copy Silent Hill. No surprise there. Silent Hill is unique, even when today the franchise is almost dead, it is truly the best psychological horror game ever. Just the Story of SH2 is something no other game have been capable to copy. I will Team Silent was reorganize and develop another game. I am not exited about the upcoming SH downpour.

I don't see why Resident Evil is referred to as this founder or pioneer of a genre. I understand it's significance and what made it unique, but Alone in the Dark comes way before that and also put you in a horrific environment with low heal and ammo.

And if you ever played it, you would know it came way before Resident Evil, it had polygonal graphics way worst than the first Lara Croft, it's definitively older the Resident Evil man.

You feel like everything is watching you, and well RE doesnt do me justice, like SH does. I like RE for its action, but definitely not its horror.

Too much definition gives you a lot less horror. The horror is not being able to see clearly. That's why silent hill is falling apart - a spiritual survival horror being erased by the progess of technology

You got a good point there, but in my opinion, better graphics is not to blame. It's all about design. You can still make the horror of not being able to see clearly even with more realistic graphics; as long as the lighting, sound, camera angles and visual design is good. I think THAT is why Silent Hill is falling apart; it's turning into an action game, where the camera angles and visuals mostly support mobility instead of atmosphere,

@tredlow Yes yes true, better graphics do not necessarily mean less horror. I guess it's more about what are they aiming at: do they want to show that a monster has gross veins and that it pukes, or do they want us to feel the atmosphere the way the game charachter is feeling? Before, since the graphics weren't as much developed as now, they took a lot of effort to use other elements such as the sound or lighting, but now it seems the the aim is to give a big show rather than chilling your bones

i'm surprised that Silent Hill 3 got mixed reviews, i thought that it was one of the more brilliant ones of the series, mainly because of its build up. also they need to go back to the roots of the first four. Origins was alright - it had disturbing looking monsters and good set designs, Homecoming sucked (at least in the sense of it being scary, because it wasn't), and Shattered Memories was great psychologically, but not nearly as twisted or freaky as the originals. hopefully the new one rocks

Horror games have always failed to harvest our deepest fears, trading fear for the fun factor (certainly a fun horror game sells better) though i must admit silent hill was pretty close. A similar game is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, inspired by the marvelous literary works of H.P.Lovecraft. But the game that truly twists your mind and trashes your sanity is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It takes fear in games to a new level. Too bad few people have the courage to play it...

@TheDisturbedCamera call me an ass for generalizing, but it seems most re fans are into biology/genetic engineering research, survival and combat training, guns, and zombies (humanized rabies pendemic: quarantine/rec etc). most sh fans are into physics, meteorology, in their own nightmares, guilts, regrets, music (mostly ambient like the sh soundtracks), and literature.

I'd say SH lost it after 2 and RE lost it because its games are more action and the cliche jump out surprises doesn't really affect the current generation. Take a look at the movie industry, horror movies are dead. It's nothing but just gore and remakes of old or foreign films.
