  • one of the best songs ever :) :) :)

  • I've loved this song since I first heard it, way back when I was young... Judy Collins' version is also very fine. Andrew McLeod

  • Does anybody know where I can get an mp3 of this version of the song?

  • Magic

  • what a beautiful song. what a beautiful voice. I'm left speechless with eyes full of tears

  • i can say Jan arden is like this beautiful lady great strong voice!! real songs of real things!!!

  • .☮.¸¸.(¯`♥Who♥♪(♥♫(♥♪(♥♫d(♥‿♥)b♫♥)♪♥)♫♥)♪♥Knowz♥´¯).¸¸.☮.

  • I know where the time goes, but more importantly, where time comes from.. And it moves through us at 18.5 miles a second for us humans here on earth...

  • excellent song. Takes me way back....a late Autumn day with the sun setting early

  • Such a beautiful song....raises the hairs on my neck everytime I hear it. Makes Joan Baez sound like a fart in a trumpet when compared to Sandys sheer vocal prowness, control and power. A graceful resonance equal only to the chims of a dawns chorus on a sunny June morn. God rest ya Sandy.

  • At 60 this song still haunts me - the finest voice ever

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful classical and folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • What album is this version of the song on?

  • This song is beautiful. The first time I saw it was in the play, Jerusalem, and I cried then too. So beautiful.

  • @MaverickBat I just saw that last night. That scene was one of if not the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. This song was PERFECT for it.

  • @froofiedadawg It was pretty incredible. I am so glad I was able to find this song on here.

  • @MaverickBat That was the first time I heard it too! Just devastatingly beautiful, and fit so well with that scene.

  • Won't let me post the link just now i'll try later

  • Here is a link to an article about Sandy's life and death. Don't forget though, that this is just one persons account focussing on the "rock and roll" of a life. The circumstances of her death are accurate as far as I can remember.

  • @ wobbly 585 No, Sandy did not commit suicide. She had an accident at home falling down some stairs. I'm sure you could find more details online, perhaps the BBC?

  • This is fantastic. Is it true that she took her own life? One can listen over her career and there is a well spring of exquisite tragedy there. If anyone could tell me more abut her music and life please do. I wish all of youtubers all the best. Peace

  • Sandy recorded at least 8 versions of this song (including 2 home demos) and this one (live at the BBC, 1973) is the most touching.

A shame it is not in the 19 CDs compilation!

  • pure magic

  • Sandy Denny was the GREATEST female England Ever had...And thats saying something....I would love to see someone make a movie about her.what a sad sad story...What a major talent.....

  • @erniebeggs And Carey Mulligan should play her!

  • @xPrincessKx ......WOW..they do look alike...

  • Difficult and confronting to listen to this version , I find.

Thanks very much for sharing; I love her voice. Heard it for the first time decades ago on Liège & Lief.

  • As I listen to different versions of this song it just gets better and better. Her voice just goes right inside of you. Great post ToaBoogie. Many great comments on this page !

  • Why O Why did she have to die so young

  • Beautiful song with touching words accompained by a wonderful voice.

  • it's hard to describe how moving sandy denny's voice is. truly beautiful is a start. and a very poigniant song. amazing.

  • As John said "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans. I've been lisyening to Nick Drake a lot too recently. I feel the spirit that gave birth to these beautiful songs still resides within the melodies and can touch our hearts still if we listen with due attention and open heart. Thank you for your comments.

  • @TaoBoogie Wow, just listening to evermore and someone mentioned this lady, glad i checked her art out. amazing. I wonder if we'll ever hear as good as this again, I mean that whole era, talent over looks/fake body parts and the "celebrity" rubbish nowadays. I'm sad now, but thanks a million for posting this treasure.

  • @ sternumagnum & dixiedean10

  • Sorry but for some reason i can't reply to individual comments on my phone using TubeMate so I'll do it this way.

  • what a voice im moved to a chill listening to it, just been listening to Nick Drake earlier as well, just was not meant to be for either of them class is permanent though this really breaks my heart in two im crying now enough love @ light

  • I remember listening to this when I was very young - and feeling (thinking I was able to feel) what it would mean to get old - as old as I'm now...

  • Gone too soon...:>(

  • I miss music...

  • Some music is just too heartbreaking to hear, as much as I love this song.

  • Correct Mr Shadownoise, it's from the BBC sessions

  • @moderecords. I believe this is from a session Sandy Denny did for the BBC. The recording is still available on CD. It is achingly beautiful.

  • @moderecords. I believe this is from a session Sandy Denny did for the BBC. The recording is still available on CD.

  • ahh she IS remembered ... by those who love a pure voice

  • Gorgeous

  • Which album is this version taken from?

  • new devotee to Sandy .. unreal .. discovered Fairport through my local public radio station in Wisconsin that spun Tam Lin this past Halloween .. wow .. now maybe i can catch up on a lifetime of listening and appreciation that some of you have been on to now for some time .. i feel lucky to have 'discovered' her

  • An amazing song by an amazing lady , so sorry i was not old enough to appreciate her when she was with us .

  • It is a grave misjustice indeed that a woman of Sandy's talent could not live longer than the the 31 years she gave us. Truly an eye-watering song, shame we can't bring her back for the macabre sake of letting her voice let loose on today's talentless televisional contests. It would be a walk in the park for her. LSG x

  • I heard this the other day...it made me sad...but I still have so many great memories. Fairport Convention was such an amazing group. Sandy Denny has the most beautiful voice. What a talent lost too young in such a tragic way.

  • great stuff

  • if i could weave a dream id have u in it sandy just a no one thats me the spirit carries on to weave another dream in time just how i feel ill never know somone will pick up the torch ever the optimist rising up after a fall clumsey yet gracefull always an angel dancing with the stars forever more in peace and grace x x .. just a no one

  • The voice of an angel

  • Possibly one of the most beautiful and moving songs of all time. Sandy, why did you leave us so soon? My bet is that you are singing duets with Eva Cassidy in heaven.

  • This song will remind of places, particularly, somewhere in Northern California.. Fall, in San Francisco..Listening to this, in 'The Coffee Gallery'.. Mike Kelly's bartending, giving this crazy imitation of Laurence Harvey, from 'The Manchurian Candidate'.. A fine moment in life..

  • A beautiful singing a beautiful and haunting song. thank you.

  • It doesn't get any weepier than this. Too bad most people only know her from "The Battle of Evermore". This rendition gives me the chills.

  • @northerntao

Hello northerntao (another Tao connection) I play this tune especially at the Beltane festival and midwinter.

  • @northerntao ... that's not neccesarily a bad thing, it exposes her wonderful talent to a wider base. Peace

  • Fell in love with Cornwall late sixties with this perfect voice in my head singing The Sea.she may have left us much to early ,but she will remain in my head forever.

  • @MrKershaw07

I love the versions I have of the Sea with Fotheringay. Both are well suited to singing around a fire.

  • Sandy has walked with me through my life for so many years I cant remember, she never left me even now at sixty years old I listen to this haunting melody. such deep feelings for this truly beatifull Lady. Thank you Sandy, we miss you.

  • @mickey999able

    Me too mickey

  • This is the one, sounds quite perfect.

  • probably best of bbc, etc. but from one yank, best of most any modern day folk interpretist... ( if that's a word; she's the absolute best )

  • @ncleve1033 A beautiful voice singing a hauntingly beautiful song. This was played at a very dear friend's funeral.

  • sandy denny best of bbc

  • Sandy Denny "Best of BBC" not Fairport Convention "Best of BBC," which also has a WKWTTG live recording, resembling the studio version, not this beautiful guitar and voice version.

Finally. Sorry to post so many times. Love Sandy so much.

    Thanks again.

  • Not the BBC version ....

Any clue as to where this version is from?

  • Nevermind. Found it in the thread ... "Best of the BBC," and I've successfully tracked down the album on iTunes.

Many, many thanks for this video.

Sandy Denny, beloved and never forgotten. Timeless, indeed.

  • I've not been able to find this version of the song anywhere. It's probably Sandy at her most beautiful .... but it's not the Fairport Convention recorded version.

Can you please post if or where it can be found? I've had no luck in finding it, and this performance is absolutely breathtaking .... the most soulful rendition of this song probably ever recorded, by Sandy or any else.

Many thanks for posting it. Listened to it over a hundred times ....

  • Every time i hear this i get a lump in my throat.

I think of old friends not seen for years, i never show my feelings, but I'm just a big softie really.

  • My parents told me they used this song to put me to sleep when i was just a baby...

Knowing this and listening to it now that i'm 32 is kind of funny...

  • How lovely for your parents to do that for you.

  • Yes it was, they sound lovely, wish my Mum and Dad had been so thoughtful.

  • What a Cool and Groovy thing to do, they would be about my age, maybe a bit older.

  • Over 40 now. Wow

  • Thanks, taoboogie. She was a monster talent, and hardly remembered today.

    She sang like an angel.

  • I agree willrothfuss. She was beautiful person and singer. Though I must say she is well remembered and much loved in my part of the woods.

  • I remember.

  • No Sandy wrote this. Judy covered it.

  • Spot on dowdalli

  • I have never heard this version from - where is it from?

  • THis particular version is from the album "The Best of the BBC Recordings"

  • judy collins cover-superb-yet sandy denny was the earth mother of this song

  • This is Collins?

  • No 'tis Sandy

  • @y54tub I believe that this is Sandy's song, not Judy Collins. Judy covered it.

"Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is a song written by the English folk-rock singer and songwriter Sandy Denny. The song was originally recorded by Denny privately in 1967, and again, only accompanied by herself on guitar.

It is best known in the version sung by Denny on the Fairport Convention album Unhalfbricking.

  • Way before my time...but beautiful nonetheless.

  • To fickle friends......a timeless sad sweet song.

  • hoy se cumplen 31 años de su partida.....gracias Sandy......te recordare siempre.......

  • I tried to get some kind of chronological order with the photographs..but that proved tricky so I went for some kind of order.

  • Sweet... in a depressing kinda' way...

She looks so different in some of those photos. I assume they're not in chronological order.
