Aways loved this guy,but it,s time to to put it away,,a couple of strokes done him no good,,,you gotta give it to him though,,,like an old boxer,,he loves to play an can't stop,
@timberbeast420 He didn't have any strokes. He broke his hip twice and for several years was addicted to alcohol and klonopin. He's clean and sober today and his starting to sound and play like his old self again.
this was hard to watch....great that he finally dug this old chestnut out...its probably my favorite all time opener to a live album....that has so much FIRE.
I saw Johnny Winter live about 10 or maybe 12 years ago and he was absolutely stunning - probably the best guitarist I've ever seen live and his band was as tight as fuck, absolutely excellent.
Alas... this is a poor shadow of what he once was and even the backing band seems a bit amateaurish. Sad, really sad. JW was one of the best guitarists ever....
For all the "experts" that talk bad about Johny, I hope you can stay strong enough and be good enough when you reach his age. If you don't have any good comments, just don't watch these videos and shut your crappy mouth.
I've watched a few jW vids today - alas all the stuff recorded in 2010 seems to be a bit dodgy :-(
A great shame - I saw him about 5 or so years ago and he was absolutely amazing...
Not sure what has happened in such a relatively short period of time - but a terrible shame to see and hear him struggle. Does he need to still tour? I hear he was ripped off money-wise...
I'm with you. Johnny has nothing to apologize for but it I were him I would put the electrics aside and pick up a pre-war Stella or a 1920's Gibson and do all them Robert Johnson like only he can do.
@george383 Yes he does. Johnny needs to apologize to those fans who worked hard for their money and were duped into thinking they would see/hear Johnny as he used to be. Those who know/understand Johnny has been a feeble old drug addict unable to play are welcome to see this pathetic mess. What a train wreck. Perhaps a pair of magnifying glasses would help - he obviously cannot see the fretboard and is unable to do it by feel 95% of the time.
@beeroosterm : True fans should already know about his condition. Anyone else should know better than to expect a 67 year old to be "as he used to be" - when? in his 50's, 40's, 30's or just his prime? I doubt JW is totally aware of the situation. At this point in his life he just wants to do what he's always done - tour and try to entertain. I doubt his management is being honest with him about the quality of his playing. They are probably stroking his ego for their own financial gain.
@george383 I've been a "true fan" for 40 years and i didn't know the truth of his lifestyle until I read his recently published biography wherein it explains how he's been taking methadone for the last 40 years and washing it down with vodka and other dangerous pills, not to mention cocaine, etc. It is a wonder he's still living. And he is fully aware, as I have seen lately that he is supposedly off all meds - including methadone. He and his management are just rationalizing at this point...
@beeroosterm _I've been a huge Johnny fan all my life and I'd still go & see this *pathetic mess* anyday. Have you seen his band live lately? His playing is but a shadow of his old self, but believe me, they still kick ass! The band really does a great job of holding him up and he's still worth seeing. ..plus this: HE'S FUCKING JOHNNY WINTER! ......
@LordSauceness I have only seen YouTube posts of his 2011 shows, but I need see/hear no more. Even fully off all his meds, he is done. I do not need your assessment to see/hear that his ability to play is done and gone. Kaput. He abused himself too badly with drugs/alcohol and his ability to play is destroyed. Are you deaf? It kills me that he's so bad, but I'm glad to have so much of his stuff available when he was firing on all cylinders.
@beeroosterm ok......everybody knows J.W's guitar virtuosity is gone..... but live, his band kicks ass. I've seen them couple years ago and I've seen Johnny back in the good ol' days........... the band is rockin'.....
I play guitar a bit, and I know how Johnny plays, ..then & now..... in the old days, absolutely no one rocked it up like J.W. ..and his band he's got today, know this, and sort of capture it a bit....well worth seeiing! ...
@LordSauceness Yes, his band rocks - but I pathetically yearn to hear Johnny rock! Sadly, we will never again hear him do so. His band exists now mostly to cover up Johnny's embarrassing playing. They're either doing it because they love Johnny and/or they desperately need the money. No professional musician would otherwise put up with a guitar player that so offends the ear. I pull for him with every new video I see, but he's just gone. Sad.
@londonuk70 I think it's stupid to ignore the fact that Johnny's a feeble old man plunking away like a drunk schoolboy. And since you cannot read between the lines, I'm saying that I love this guy - that's why it's so difficult to see him play like this. So fuck you, too.
@LordSauceness Do you mean Johnny's licks as he plays them today? You'll have to hold on while I drink a quart of vodka and take a few Quaaludes. You can see that Johnny's playing by feel because he's quite unable to see (he just stares straight out). Unfortunately, he just cannot do it. I know there have been guitars with lighted fret markers before - perhaps a competent luthier can rig his guitar with very bright LED's so Johnny can keep his place - I bet his playing would improve noticeably.
@beeroosterm --Doubt if LEDs would help his playing. He's not totally blind. I got to meet him about 3 years ago and he can see good enough to sign autographs and shake your hand. No, his fingers are shot. No speed, no strength, no agility. His playing now is weak. The licks are still in his mind, but the body can't execute them.
@LordSauceness "Fairly intact" is the operative phrase. How hard is it to do what he does on the slide? It keeps him from making picking errors because he's tuned to a chord and doesn't have to finger any individual notes, which is what he has huge problems with. He's sloppy as hell and all over the place. And I'm as sick of "Highway 61" as can be. "61" used to be one of my favorites but I just want to scream nowadays...
@londonuk70 -"who cares about your "professional opinion"?
....Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one, and everybody thinks all the other's stink. If artists are out playing for money, people can say anything they like. Johnny's been my guitar hero for decades,- that was then, this is now. There's a lot of rockers his age still able to kick ass. Age ain't the problem, drug abuse was/is. He's feeble, his playing kinda sucks, his band kicks ass, and
Nice live shot of a classic.
