As I remember on the special features, Richard Kelly says that the dance was originally choreographed to West End Girls, but because of the 4/4 time they were able to substitute Notorious post-production. I love the notion of West End Girls with its moody synth sound over this scene, but I don't think it was used in its entirety. For instance, if you play the song, the rapid synth chords at 1:23 perfectly fit with the girls' little half-steps backward.
I just noticed one of the things that makes this extra creepy. None of the girls are smiling. Usually kid acts like this have crazy pageant smiles going on through their acts. Sparkle Motion almost looks morbid performing. Great effect.
I never knew that this was to be the song used. It works very well but DD Notorious is so much more sleazy sounding than this when using little girls.
This is retarded. Why would you take something thats amazing and take the one of the best parts out of it? Thats like replacing your wife's wedding ring's diamond with a rock.
i know west-end-girls is actually kinda dark song, but the overall feeling doesn't feel like it, while notorius got a more dark vibe to it which fitted darkos action better.
This Pet Shop Boys song was of the "depeche mode" type songs... grittier, sexier, more mature than Duran Duran... which makes Duran Duran's "Notorious" more fitting, as one said earlier, for juxtaposing how ridiculous these little girls are in their emo, German Goth-esque expressions with the creepy, not cool latter sounds of a desperate Duran Duran, who along with other 80's "boy bands", would suck ass in a frightening way... But nothing was creepier than "A View To A Kill" ... oh, the horror.
Both versions work, but Notorious made Sparkle Motion so much more iconic. I just don't find myself going... OMFG ITS SPARKLE MOTION in this version like I do with the faster song.
well what people gotta remember the edited the dance to fit more smoothly with notorious once they could'nt get the rights for west end girls...so what we see isnt the full dance
This is awesome, and definitely fits the overall tone of the movie. However, Notorious does do something else for it - it gives it that authentic 80s feel of taking dance lessons. Like comic relief in the middle of creepy stuff.
i cant watch donnie darko without thinking nah nah notorious, but i think i almost like this song better, duran duran works, but i think this fits the whole unsettling feeling of the movie better though
actually ... they had about 5 million US dollars to complete the film and as for the usage of Duran Duran's "Notorious" that song actually works better with the choreography because of the fast paced movement in the beginning on the routine
I realize that. It was the cost difference between two cheesy 80s songs I was questioning.
20+ years later, I can't fathom how one could cost that much more than the other. It's not like they were going to use the Beatles, but had to sttle for the Stones.
I hate the direcors cut. Outtakes are outtakes for a reason, to thrown them back in and to mess about with the soundtrack, especially the opening sequence replacing the perfect Killing Moon with the infinately inferior, INXS track was nothing short of criminal! Th original movie is King in every aspect, tune selection especially.
I don't care what anyone else says. "Notorious" seemed horribly out-of-place with the rest of the mood of the movie. West End Girls fits so much better.
I really don't like it as good as Duran Duran. I'm almost kind of glad that Richard Kelly didn't get the music he wanted because when I saw the Director's Cut and they took out Echo and the Bunnymen for INXS, it made me scream. This would have made me scream louder.
It was lucky that they couldn't get the right to use West End Girls in the movie. "Notorious" fits the danceroutin just as well and fits Donnies actions even better...
it's not like they just changed the music...they reedited the routine to fit the different music so that it looked like it matched...so of course it looks more fitting.
Nope sorry! This was sort of fun, but the original is always the best.

Does anyone else think that the singer in the first verse sounds like Jorma Taccone in "Jizz in my pants"?

Baloney! This song does not fit the choreography at all!

I feel like this song fits better with the moves rhythmically, but I definitely love hearing Duran Duran's notorius more.

" what's feces?"
"I don't know I think it's baby mice."
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
This movie was well thought out. Even the part where the video game has a red sports car that crashes, is forshadowing!

i wish they had used this song in the final cut. the over all tone and meaning of this song fits the film.
the Duran Duran cut always made me wonder on the choice, never thought it would be the lame excuse of MONEY.

I would have to disagree with you. Notorious seems to fit once Donnie comes into the scene. How to music just fades into it makes it more real.

Agreed, I much prefer it with Notorious, but I do enjoy how much more of it we got to see on the Director's Cut. :)
Either way, Daveigh is adorable.
