It's okay to play Bach's music on a piano, but it is not okay to call this a piano concerto. It was written for harpsichord. Otherwise, I quite like the way the pianist has executed this performance.
Can't some of you just enjoy some good music? If some other artist played the be-all, end-all of this music in a recording and you heard it and believe that that interpretation is the only correct one then go listen to that instead. Only Bach knew how he wanted his music played and he's been gone a long time.
“I believe that the only excuse we have for being musicians and for making music in any fashion is to make it differently: to perform it differently to establish the music’s difference vis-à-vis our own difference.” –Glenn Gould
So I'll compare to celebrate the difference. Cheers to the uniqueness for we're all gifted.
There is a period (from 2:56 - 3:30ish) when he seems to have such an incredibly light touch that the notes sound like harmonics played on the guitar. Very, very sensitive. I don't think I've ever heard a piano played like this. Does any else have an insight into this.
Why does everybody have to compare ALL the Bach players to Glenn Gould ? Okay, he's officially the "best Bach player", but he has a very special style, and it's wrong to take him as a reference. I don't think we can say this version is better or worse than Glenn Gould's. It's just totally different.
This is great. The closest I've heard of a Glenn Gould performance. Really smooth and flowing. Bach's d minor and his g minor are still my favorites 2 piano concertos. Wonderful new talent. Thank you for loading this for us. Bach just had no idea how people would one day literally slobber and foam at the mouth listening to this kind of dream stuff.
@TheOtherMusicMan : He doesn't sound at all like Gould ! (doesn't mean he doesn't sound as good as him, but apart from the fact both interpretations are pure genious, I'm curious to know how one can think they are related!)
@tdo75 Perhaps the difference is in the ear of the beholder. :-)
If you can find a decent quality pre-Gould recording of Bach 1st piano concerto i, that's where I begin (not easy) and from there compare Gould's to other artists that followed. I have not found one by Argerich unfortunately and would love that. Opinions are opinions and I respect yours.
Brilliant,Bach wäre begeistert.Eine Spannung, ein phänomenaler Anschlag ,musikalische Intelligenz und Sinnlichkeit.Danke lieber Gott für so viel Emotion!Merci bien David Fray......

Very good!
But I think it would be so much better on a harpsichord!

@Kiinsuke I agree with you, but David Fray has had Glenn Gould as one of his main inspirations.
