I love Yu Suzuki. I don't care how he comes out with shenmue 3, book, anime, manga, video game, graphic novel, or movie. I want to see the end of his brilliant work O_O!
You're great! You actually got an interview with the master. Loved it. Merci beaucoup. But isn't it kind of sad, the master's favorite part has not been made yet? It's one my biggest wishes for my life to see the story of Shenmue finished in a game. I'd even choose it over seeing my country win the World Cup.
When Shenmue 2 came out, I was 16. Until today I have not forgotten about Shenmue and I never will.
Great interview asked a lot of questions that didn't even come to my mind, I recently got a VGA box hooked up to my 25" monitor so I've been replaying Shenmue and discovering what I fell in love again 10 years ago.
Yu Suzuki best make Shenmue 3 as his next company project (1st being Shenmue Gai) or else ima swim over to Japan and give him some super sonic wedgy you gettt me. :/
Gotta admit, it's pretty ballsy of Kenji Seang to do a face-to-face interview. Great work! But I have to agree: there are so many unanswered questions...
For example, what console will it be released on?
How long until they pick up the project again? (the eternal question =_=)
Whatever happened to Nozomi? (can't help caring; Ryo WAS her first love afterall)
And...well, this is embarassing, but did Ren and Joy have a "thing" XD? And what's her relationship with Guizhang?
all shenmue fans boycott sega until they give this man the chance to make the third game. shenmue is more significant to its fans than any other sega game and probably any other series of games in general.
@erehllort I also heard it was sega that refused to make the game? Is there any truth to that allegation? Do you have a source/link of some sort that I can view? If it's true then I'm very disappointed in sega. If Shenmue just had more publicity than the previous 2 attempts, I KNOW they would redefine the entire genre of RPG/adventure? I'm not sure what to even call it. It's so unique, it's just amazing.
If they game only had a CHANCE. It would be so incredible.
Please enlighten me... Does he mean 11 chapters as in Shenmue II being just the second, or do Shenmue and Shenmue II relate to a multiple number of chapters?
I swear if shenmue3 appears, I'll buy the game 2 times, once to play and the others never touch! no matter how long it takes, I firmly believe that will appear shenmue3, I think yu suzuki wants it the most!No other game I liked it so much as shenmue!
many of the games were not continuations have been forgotten completely already after 2 years! shenmue3 want more and more people! if do not want sega shenmue3 then he should leave it to yu suzuki! and nobody knows better how the game can yu suzuki!
I would love Shenmue 3, but the fact is it will get overlooked by the majority of gamers, they will take one look at it, ask if it has an online mode, realize it's a single player story driven game and discard it as a "casual game" or "a Japanese attempt at GTA"
sega made more than enough money off yakuza series to just give yu the money and finish what tons of fans want to play.....the last yakuza had four characters..why not for 5 ( i know there will be one)..make ryo a playable person and watch the feedback youll get from it...ill play his level until the system breaks...MAKE IT...WATCH HOW MANY PEOPLE BUY IT!!! ILL BUY A COPY FOR EVERY REGION
Shenmue is the most underrated RPG and could be one of the greatest games in history. I still play it today, almost 12 years after its release. So much passion in it and you really feel like you're part of the story once you really get into it. It starts to sink into you and you disappear into a whole new world. You don't want to set your controller down and you always want to know whats next, even if you've beaten it multiple times.
@Fabiofigo71 Excuse me? It most definitely IS an RPG! Any real Shenmue fan knows that!
It was marketed as an open world RPG, look it up! Shenmue isn't Final Fantasy, it is something totally different and yes, it is a Role Playing game, you take the role of Ryo, you feel like you are him, that is what Role playing is all about. The leveling up is restricted to learning new fighting moves, but this is a game that is totally different from any RPG since.
This video made me cry at the part where Yu Suzuki said that his favorite part of the series is yet to come. It makes me so sad that I may never get to see the best part of the Shenmue saga. Thank you for making this video. I wish that we will get Shenmue 3 on the PS3 or PS4.
This made me started to get teary eyed....I miss Shenmue so much....I really hope it goes keep going! Please SEGA, allow him to make Shenmue III....give hope to us!
I was hoping it would longer than just 3 games, Would love to see shenmue 3, 4 and 5 but I think we would be lucky to even get a third one, Im sure SEGA can afford it instead of making yearly updates to the Yakuza series. Dont get me wrong I love Yakuza but Shenmue will always be my favourite game series of all time.
There is finally some real hope now. To sum things up if Yu Suzuki can somehow acquire those rights we CAN see a Shenmue 3 , even without Sega's help. This is huge news in he way that he is talking on the subject, it shows a serious intent. By talking about trying to obtain the rights Suzuki is giving Sega an ultimatum , help me make it or i go to another developer, that's what i think anyway.
First bit of really good news in a while, we have to aim at getting the HD ports first though!
Ages ago when games did not cost as much time and money to develop we saw more innovative titles popping up. Companies were interested in making art and magic in a game, it seems they lost these desires and only focus on pumping out sequels on founded series that would pull in profits. I can not blame them to an extent, they have to eat, but unlike my childhood (since Master System days), I never really see any upcoming title that I want to play.
As much as Yu Suzuki obviously wants to make Shenmue 3, I doubt Sega will be willing to bet a large sum of money on making a game such as Shenmue. It requires alot of resources and time. It could possibly take 2-3 years to finish, I very much doubt it will be a rush job. And looking at Nintendo recently it just goes to show how easy it is to make billions in losses in a year.
Oh well, I was settling on some books or possibly some manga but you know Sega..
Seriously, I don´t want Shenmue 3. I think most of the fans don´t know why they like Shenmue so much. And personally I think it´s because of it´s mysteries. There are so many things we don´t know, like meeting Ryos friends again or fighting Lan Di...But if Shenmue 3 would end the story and give us all our answers, then the first two games would lose their magic, because we know what will happen and how it ends. Well this is just my opinion and I think I am not wrong with it.
@EScrimson I know exactly why I liked Shenmue. It was a hybrid sandbox/martial arts fighting game. It kickstarted the sandbox games we know and love today. While I can't say the world was truly living, it was the first game that decided to give everyone daily routines and some semblance of a living world. If S3 were to be made, I'd want to see more of this. To see more people living their lives. To put more coins in an arcade. And above all, to kick the shit out of some more sailors!
Interestingly, if Shenmue 1 & 2 were put together as one game, the 2nd chapter would likely be put back in. It was likely removed from Shenmue 2 because it did not work as an opening narrative to the game. In terms of narrative, it would have been jarring to start Shenmue 2 in such an undramatic fashion, and with the boss of Shenmue 1 (Chai) at the opening of the game.
I would pay for a remake of Shenmue I and II...Shenmue is one of the most memorable games ever for me. A continuation of the Shenmue series would be awesome!
I always imagined that Yu Suzuki had finished the story. This interview seems to suggest that while he has written quite a ways past Shenmue II (Chapters 2-6, he said) by writing eleven chapters in total, it also seems to suggest that he has not concluded the story. In other words, ... not only does he want to make Shenmue III, but we might even need Shenmue IV before the story could have true closure! :o
Tantalizing to hear that his favorite moment hasn't even shown up yet. :o
i want to buy this game again but so rare to find i remember i played the English version when i was 12 my uncle bought it for me and i didn't know any English lol so was so hard for me to understand but still i loved it .
Thanks to Kenji for the awesome interview! I normally don't comment on videos but I just had to show gratitude for the excellent work! Thanks for the upload Ziming!
Great interview... I hope Sega lets Suzuki make Shenmue 3 really soon... I've been waiting for this for 10 years! I must know what happens in the 16 chapters of Shenmue.
it' simple as a couple comments have said the same thing, release Shenmue 1 & 2 HD Collection to re encourage the fans and make some strides to recouping the money it took to make the games, then release Shenmue 3!
In this generation, it's at the point it would generate tons of money, ESPECIALLY if it's marketed well, fan demand alone would grant you a good couple millions
The interviewer's combination of enthusiasm and genuine sorrow perfectly represent the experience of being a shenmue fan. Thank you for getting this interview. Though it weirdly hurts to keep hope alive 10 years later, it's always a privilege to watch a genius speak passionately about his art.
Thanks so much for the translation and thanks to Kenji for making this happen and unearthing some interesting info! At last we know that 11 chapters of the story are written. I wonder how many more he planned though? My next question would be about the force driving the cliffhanger at the end of number 2.
HD Remake the original 2, let that sell in a bundle and let the people that didn't get to experience it play it through... then release the 3rd one... i've spent days on the first 2... soft spot in my heart for these games.
Thank you all for your very enthusiastic concerns, sincerely !
I just want to precise one thing, I am not sure that when Yu Suzuki said : "SEGAから僕たちがライセンスを受けることができます" he actually means that his team can BUY the license from SEGA.
I think it's more like : he can USE the license (like he has done with Shenmue Gai and Sunsoft. NB: Shenmue Gai which ended few days ago but don't forget that Yu Suzuki is currently thinking to pursue the game on smartphone -he said that in videoxoc's TGS interview-).
Hmm i wonder how much Sega would want for it, considering they can't make it without Yu Suzuki since it's unlikely anyone but him knows the story. He could recoup the money spent on acquiring it by releasing Shenmue 1 and 2 on psn/xbla and possbily create a demand for the third too!
Yu Suzuki has been committed to wanting Shenmue III developed for years. The problem is the budget. I wouldn't mind if a first party company bought exclusivity rights to fund the game's development.
very nice interview... I don't know if Yu Sazuki really has any serious plans to try and revive the series, or is he just having fun with the interview, and the appreciation knowing there is a small but hardcore following of his games and story. I hope he's not playing with us though! Of course we as fans take this info very seriously :)
Good 'ol Yu doesn't look worried at all about Shenmue III.
When he says "we" can obtain the license/IP does that mean his new development studio (YS NET) would end up working on the project? Is that him confirming at the least, it's possible?
Either the game truly is being planned out or Suzuki is taking all those hidden moments and missing Chapters to the grave.
Although after viewing this interview I feel more confident that work on advancing the series is seriously being considered now.
@URDTM It def needs! i 100% agree, i think its unfair from sega to Tease us and wait, it truly hurts for me atleast as a big fan as everyone els, it makes me sad, angry and very frustrated :( we been waiting a looooooong time already, and im honestly starting to lose all my respect to sega, only Yu Suzuki keeps my faith going
This breaks my heart. You can see Yu Suzuki has such passion for his creation, and wants to finish it so badly. SEGA, help him! I swear, this game will sell millions. Especially if you released a Shenmue 1+2+3 Trilogy Edition.
@PeteyPeeps01 As much as I'd like to agree, it most likely won't sell millions unless SEGA puts a HUGE marketing scheme behind it, and even then it isn't guaranteed. The fact of the matter is, they haven't done it yet BECAUSE it was a commercial flop and they didn't market it well enough. Shenmue is one of the reasons SEGA left the console business, after all.
I will always carry this story in my heart. It shaped my young life in a positive way, and am eternally greatful for those who made the first 2 possible, but part of me is empty knowing that the story is unfinished. It evolves with my life.
Very interesting interview. I hope this is the time when he finally get's the chance to make Shenmue III. I don't know if I can wait another 10 years. I'll go crazy.
I don't want a Shenmue III without SEGA, that would break my heart. Shenmue III must be made by Yu Suzuki and SEGA together, I don't accept other solutions. Nice interview btw, thanks!
For me, it isnt that the name SEGA has to be attached, but people forget that Yu Suzuki wasn't the only person that made Shenmue great. The development team was big and had a lot of AM2/AM3 love.
I find it interesting that he says he can aqquire Shenmue from Sega... Interesting but I don't think it's the best outcome. It wasn't Suzuki alone that made Shenmue the masterpeice it is. It had a lot of developers from AM2 and AM3. The developers of the Virtua Fighter series are the reason the fighting is so well made.
I hope instead Sega just gives him the go ahead... Common Sega!
Man I still remember the days when I played Shenmue I & II on the Dreamcast with my bro. This Shemue game continues to be very special to many fans and I'd like to congratulate Kenji Seang for conducting and compiling such a wonderful tribute of an interview.
Thank you so kindly for reliving my memories of Shemue and also for giving me insight that there is a possibility of a future game from the series. *thumbs up*
In the time they could have made Shenmue, SEGA made comic-movie tie-ins that generally sucked balls. They should make Shenmue 3 just as a way of apologizing for all that crap.
This really answers a lot of speculation and open-ended questions about the story. I got more out of this than any other "Shenmue 3" marketed video on YouTube. Many thanks for sharing and uploading, as well as for the interviewer with well prepared questions.
Oh man, Shenmue has to be completed within my lifetime! If I ever became a billionaire I would fund all of the project, so Sega wouldn't lose any money or take any risk.
This interview was great, and I find it really interesting that Suzuki-san nodded when asked if that was Lan Di's father in the picture..10 years later and we're still finding out about every little detail about this amazing game and piece of art...
Yu's legacy is already great but imagine if he can give us shenmue 3 to give everyone closure and his legacy that much greater Yu wants shenmue 3 too he is just waiting on the word from Sega
It will be great if I see Ryo vs Lan Di :)

KenjiSeang 1 month ago
Hmm i wonder how much Sega would want for it, considering they can't make it without Yu Suzuki since it's unlikely anyone but him knows the story. He could recoup the money spent on acquiring it by releasing Shenmue 1 and 2 on psn/xbla and possbily create a demand for the third too!
spardassoul2 1 month ago
damn SEGA we want SHENMUE 3... not alpha protocol yakuza or like that...
SHENMUE 3, the give yu suzuki san the licence for SHENMUE 3 !!

This breaks my heart. You can see Yu Suzuki has such passion for his creation, and wants to finish it so badly. SEGA, help him! I swear, this game will sell millions. Especially if you released a Shenmue 1+2+3 Trilogy Edition.
PeteyPeeps01 1 month ago 65
@PeteyPeeps01 As much as I'd like to agree, it most likely won't sell millions unless SEGA puts a HUGE marketing scheme behind it, and even then it isn't guaranteed. The fact of the matter is, they haven't done it yet BECAUSE it was a commercial flop and they didn't market it well enough. Shenmue is one of the reasons SEGA left the console business, after all.

I don't want a Shenmue III without SEGA, that would break my heart. Shenmue III must be made by Yu Suzuki and SEGA together, I don't accept other solutions. Nice interview btw, thanks!

@supersonic83
For me, it isnt that the name SEGA has to be attached, but people forget that Yu Suzuki wasn't the only person that made Shenmue great. The development team was big and had a lot of AM2/AM3 love.

Thank you!
SonosukeYawara 1 month ago
