Dude, I love your videos, just wish they were longer. Keep up the great work! You have a website? I have been making some terrain after watching some of your videos and wanted to send some pics to show you what I've done. Your an inspiration!
high density foam makes an amazing insulater and are used by fishermen to pack fish with ice mush when they are at sea - almost no other refrigeration is required in cooler climates to keep the fish fresh. Sadly fishermen are not always as caring of their environment as they could be and here in Hong Kong they are often just discarded.
The wildlife doesnt care (you will find all sorts of creatures make homes in the stuff) but it looks ugly as sin!
1st link s/be my site - goop description, recipe and link to Materials and Supplies you can see the caulking, etc.
Basically it is a white glue (I use weldbond) mixed with an acrylic latex caulk, then add water (got to play with the ratios depending on what your coating) then add some plaster of paris to thicken (again add to taste)
I get the caulk at a Home Hardware and the glue and plaster of paris at Home Depot.
The pink stuff here is called - FOAMULAR® rigid foam insulation (made by Owens Corning). The blue stuff is called - STYROSPAN™ extruded polystyrene insulation (made by DOW).
Tougher than the white pebbly packing-type styrofoam. Pink is a bit tougher than the blue (denser). I think a length of the pink 30cm (12") and say 3cm x 3cm (1-1/4" x 1-1/4") would break like to a pencil. When carved to a thickness less than 1/2" (<12mm) I reinforce it with embedded toothpicks or bamboo skewers.
After applying too many Canadian taxes, it works out to approx $6 per 1/2" thickness. It comes in 2 foot by 8 foot sheets. i.e (for me) a 1-1/2" thick piece costs approx $15-$18.

That's hillarious. Must be coming from docks being thrashed.
Are they mostly the white pebbly crap? I've seen interesting types some with really big foam pebbles.

I did the pencil comparison. Did a vid too (it will be up later). Anyway, a 1/2" thick piece 2" wide has approx. the same shore strength of a pencil.

what exactly is this foam called??? and can you compare the density of like the breaking to something that I could relate to... say a pencil???
