@agraymouse I was one of his students at UGA, and actually, he works in the complete opposite way. He builds a three dimensional grid of clay (you can see a bit of it towards the top of the sculpture at 2:51 right in the center of the frame), and then adds the figures on. They are all hollow, though thick, and he builds each column in two to three sections. You can see the dividing line between the sections at 2:51 at the bottom of the frame.

I believe he works from a large amount of clay and subtracts it to make the entire piece, but I'm not positive.
