For me when the car stopps for examle on a traffic light the tom tom app says that there is poor gps reception and stopps working. When the car starts moving the gps starts working again. Can somebody help me out with this?

@thejimmylittle uhm no. "Assisted" uses triangulation with cellphone towers. A-GPS is available in handsets without compasses or accelerometers as well. Except for that little technicality I agree with the rest of your comment.

google map on iphone is free, it is gsp- positioned but only accurate a certain radius not as accurate as a satnav and it wont tell you when to turn and you have to reroute yourself if you are lost! ofcos you'll need an unlimited data tariff or else none of these works.

@milanvdv yes you do need an external receiver for the iphone and ipod touch. If you have an iphone 3g or 3gs it has internal gps and needs no data plan or celluar signal.

I work with TomTom on this and can say the app does not require data connectivity to function. Since the maps are fully loaded to the device, it runs off your GPS chip instead.

As far as street name announcements (Text to Speech), this was just added in the free 1.2 update along with several other features.

My 2.99 MotionX GPS Drive app is way better than this!! I was going to get the TOM TOM until I spotted this one. Do not let the price fool you!! It is every bit as good as a $600.00 or $100.00 app! I have a $600.00 garmin and this app keeps up. I can also use it and be on the phone at the same time as well!

I guess the price is ok if you dont have a GPS. You would have to have it pluged in all the time because the battery wouldnt last for a long trip.That means you would have a powercord hanging around.

It is out on the web for jailbroken phones (as well as all of the rest of them); if you know where to go. I have to say, it is worth the money to have at least one GPS app. If nothing else, there is a free one out on Cydia (GPSx), you just need to have it cache an area of Google maps while you are on WIFI.

The app was built to be used with that kit they're putting out. In the kit I believe they boost the GPS signal somehow. That may be why it's lagging a bit. When you get the actual kid it may work better.

My mom has a Blackberry Storm, and the GPS seems more consistent, but it DRAINS the battery, and when you have it on a charger and you travel great distances, it overheats to the point it might burn you, and you lose the navigation for some reason. But I prefer the application itself.
