It has it's roots in hardcore, and takes more inspiration from that and sociopolitical topics than the popularised opinion of emo which is lyrics about bad breakups. To clear things up - This is metalcore. As it is, was and used to be. Some people have other (mostly wrong) notions of what metalcore is, but this is one of the defining bands, along with bands like Indecision, Integrity, Starkweather, Adamantium etc. It is not screamo - people have odd notions about that genre as well.
