  • Cars with different strengths on different parts of the track made for the best racing. Grunt verse handling!

  • What a fucking race!!! rip brocky

  • Yes, the M3 has 'half the engine', but also 400kg less weight. its power to weight ratio is equal or better.......... ( BMW 350hp/900kg, Commodore 400hp/1300kg or so )

  • @Jiu72Jitsu Where the M3's back then on par with the DTM spec M3's?

  • @MaCcAM40a3 Not much, but in 1991 the M3 Evoll is a DTM car from 1990 (Tony Longhurst racing B&H) 2.5L 350BHP 980KG twin cam engine 10,000rpm. The only DTM car allowed in ATCC

  • M power - what more can you say - RIP PB!

  • @jmmelnyk too fuking right brother... LONG LIVE THE KING

  • FUCK V8 SUPERTAXICARS This is real racing

  • Arribaaaa BMW///

  • pretty impressive from the m3, the commo has probably the best Australian touring car driver (brock) behind the wheel and the m3 is still keeping up

  • @bob67jones

Brock was very good, But Jim Richards in the BMW is every bit as good as Brock and Richards is still winning championships

  • @bob67jones Don't worry Sir Jim Richards is no slouch behind the wheel

  • holdens have a lot of power and nothing more.

  • @foeunit not true

  • will we every see a return to this!!

  • I dont see how thats showing brocky getting the daylights beaten out of him by the bmw, it took richo 3 laps to pass him... had it been one lap when the bmw flew past then i would agree

    great vid though

  • My brother Rich and I replayed this video over countless times as kids back in 1987 and is one of the all time great "David and Goliaths". It's one of the best ever examples of how a genius like Jim Richards can keep a small capacity car on the ragged edge of top performance, to knock of a bigger engined car that's being driven by a good, but not as consistent, top driver as Brockie.

  • that was intense!

  • Be good to see other manufacturers in the game again, not this NASCAR type bullshit they have had for so long. Bring real cars into it!!!! (FUCK SUPERCARS)

  • Yeah, the older M3's were 4cyl. Being Group A racing you couldn't replace it with a 6cyl, you had to race with the engine the manufacturer released it with. Obviously highly modified.

Dont care whos better (Brock/Richards), but thats brilliant racing! and how it should be.

  • Whether you are a Holden or ford fan there's no denying brocky was one hell of a driver

  • @ambulance000 Perkins was better. Look at how many Bathurst wins Brock had Perkins as second driver and look at how many engines Perkins built that won Brock a Bathurst.

(Not sayin Brock wasn't a good driver, just a bit overated.)

  • @ozzybungle Perkins wasn't an engine builder at HDT was he? Wasn't he the workshop manager?

  • Awesome, thanks! I miss ATCC - the V8 Supercars are nothing compared to this!

  • Does anyone have this whole race at Symmons Plains to put on Youtube?

  • The very next year Brock was in an M3. Can't beat em join em

  • @matjencharli that didnt last long...

  • very very nice race :)

  • it looks like the M3 driver has his arm resting on the door lol

  • that beamer went on and won a few didnt it, that was like one of the first great racecars beamer made,l correct if wrong lol

  • pity they dont let m3's into bathurst now days

  • R.I.P Brock

  • I love the F1 but this is real motor racing, I love it!!!!!!!

  • How much horsepower did this BMW actually have in 1987?

They quoted 300hp and 965kg in 1987 Bathurst, but in 1988 sandown they said the BMW M3 actually had 295hp, not quite 300.

What is the top speed of the 1987 BMW M3?

What is the top speed and horsepower of Brocks 1987 Commodore?

  • Looks a little dry for Tassie, are they Scaleectrix cars???

  • Absolutely brilliant racing, the all the muppet drivers of V8 racing these days would get there panties in a twist and try and nudge the other car off the track if they couldn't get past!!

  • Does anyone know where I could hold of a DVD of the 87 season? I would love to get hold of it.

  • Now you wonder why they kicked the other car companies out of Bathurst......

  • @chenman9 The m3 never won bathurst

  • @VIPEROSIBROCK nissan did win bathurst however

  • @BenjiMC1

It sure did and deserved to. The gibson motorsport skylines were the best touring cars in the world! I was just saying that the m3 was not really a factor in going to the group a 5 litre formula.

  • What a shame racing today wasn't like this instead of this bullshit with Holdens and Ford with engines they dont even have in them. These days cars that were produced for the road were they same litres as the race engines, now it's a complete wanker series

  • Those were the races, not todays boring holden vs ford... Taxi racers...

  • even brocky drove an m3 at bathurst if you can't beat them join them

  • he drove an M3 at Bathurst because he had a fallout with Holden about the Polariser in one of the special vehicles he wanted to release...thats why if u notice at Bathurst in 1987 he has Brock across the window, not Holden

  • Impressive! The M3 has half the engine and manages to get in front of the commodore anyway.

  • @e30clew yeah but to bad it didnt have enuf balls to win bathurst.... ever

  • @e30clew couldn't have put it better myself

  • @e30clew werent the m3 6's?

  • @CuzPBz All the roadgoing M3 E30's were straight-4's. I don't know about the raceversions though

  • @JzAeroo yeah just looked it up ur right, i must be thinking of a diffrent model my bad

  • @e30clew and also its alot lighter to so the power to weight is better

  • No the new E92 M3 REVS at 8,300

  • Judd V8 10,000 RPM !!! E36 BMW Hillclimb car

  • The BM is still a piece of Shit....where r they now???? V8"s rule....

  • ahhaha they are in the top of the world ///

ford holden + nisan and honda v8 super cars

  • They changed the rules to keep anything other than Ford's and Holdens out you Muppet. Just appreciate this vid for the skill involved and the legends who drove the cars.

  • Assuming "BM" means BMW, your an idiot because the new M3 has a V8. And as for this video, possibly the best track battle I've seen in a while. Great racing.

  • nah mate your the idiot.....where are they now ya dick.....who is dominasting motor racing in Australia.....Ford & Holden....sorry what happen to the shit boxes of there in the production classes....don't get me wrong i love the production classes....maybe BM need to talk to AVESCO & maybe they could be racing in 2011, that'd be cool......

  • ahahhahahahaha idiot fucking bogan go visit europ some times hahahha holshits

  • bmw its in a diferent lige bitch holden honda ford kia

  • @708426 can you even spell?

  • where are they know? ther not havin a problem with bankrupcy are they what happened a few months ago to holden had to get 200 million dollar bailout by the government coz onlyu bogan cunts like you want their piece of shit cars european cars FTW

  • yuk bmw's are gay, wow you can grip on a corner go to the trophy shop pus hahah u will never sound as good, run as fast on the quarter or do as good skid as a commodore jog on

  • Wow you really are a bogan.

    A 4cyl beating Brocky in a V8 Ahahahaha!

  • hahahhahahha goo too europe some times hahhaha

  • learn to spell then come back and talk. "goo too" hahaha dumb ass

  • its a shame how they got rid of the BMWs and Nissans......

  • Yeah because they were dominating the competition, and they were only 4 cyl engines. S14's are legendary.

  • Fantastic racing from down under!!! I love that left hand banked hairpin... that would be a fun cornet to take -- especially on the outside.

Nice post, thanks for sharing! 5+ Stars

  • e30 m3 - sex on wheels. Bloody good footage tho. surprisingly what 2.3 with german root can do with 5l OZ.

  • lol i agree and don't forget the E30 m3 is a 4-cylinder!!!

  • bugger me you aussie boys know how to do it !!! best bit of race footage ive ever seen!

  • that was awesome holden v8 man thru and thru but i sure can respect that bmw power and engineerin neck and neck 90% of they way good work boys neither are as good as each other

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the power by M///

  • Good old days!!

  • brocky was great, but thats a bmw 4 cylinder non turbo, pretty darn good, long live the S14!

  • To the poster. I wouldnt say that JR beat the daylights out out of the Grp A. He took 3 laps to get past and he was in the superior car at the time.

I thought it was some good racing though.

  • no it did get the daylights beat out of it considering the commordore had 5 liters and the m3 2.4 altho I thought it was actually 2.3

  • Correct. The original E30 M3 was a 2.3L car. The evo version brought out in 1991 was a 2.5L and those things flew.

  • I just said I think 2.3 because some guy I think down here said it had a 2.4 liter engine

  • It was just a 4 Cylinder... Brock had a V8 under the hood. I assuming that the power difference between the VK and the BMW must of been minimal.

  • Great to see gentlemen racers duking it out without the gratuitous panel damage you see today. It was an excellent era in motorsport - both the cars and the drivers.

  • Brocky, what a legend. Anyone but brocky drivin the vl and they would have been overtaken right at the start.

  • Allan Grice was also driving a Commodore in this same race, and was way out in front of Brock and everyone else, he had an 8sec lead at one point..... until his car retired within 10 laps of the finish

  • brock was in a VK. Excellent racing.

  • Awesome racing, even though I am one eye Ford, I still think this is great driving from 2 legends of motorsport!

  • its a vk you wanker

  • Iw as watching another brock vid in a vl just before this hence I wrote vl. I owned a Bronze Vk I know what the car is. You sackwhacker

  • BMW e30 is the best

  • Jim Richards is a great driver! Him and Brocky had some nice battles back in the day.

  • truly great racing ..

  • Now thats a good race!

    "Door handle to door handle"

  • BMW E30 POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • really nice footage.the only serious rival the m3 e30 had was the ford sierra cosworth.

  • That and the Godzilla

  • how much power was the M3 packing? I know it was always underpowered but by how much? impressive stuff! Just got a 90 M3 and love it to bits! :D

  • good drafting won him the race thats all

  • nice racing.

  • how good was that!!

  • if holdens are all that, why havent any broken the worlds fastest production car records? if you have a look. most of the records were held by european cars. the worlds fastet automatic transmission car is a mercedes slr mclaren. also bmw e30 m3s are one of the most successful racing cars of all time. what does holden have ? all they have is a bunch of bathurst wins thats it. and those werent real bombadores anyway

  • err, world's fastest pickup?

  • That is a quality video.

  • The E30 M3 was simply brilliant! I love this car!

  • ///M POWER.

  • What a race mate. Those were the days!

  • Frank Gardner knew how to build and set up a car. Thats all i'll say.

  • Those were the days .The Two best touring car drivers that Australia has ever produced. Not like todays show ponies.I stopped watching v8 touring cars when Peter Brock pastaway.....RIP ...My Friend.......

  • Mate PETER BROCK is AUSTRALIAS biggest show pony i have always said richo is far better than brock .this vid is just one example of that .how many bathurst wins with richo and perkins.what about the volvo brock could not fnish better than 10th richo took the drive and cleaned up ..brock great spokesman for the sport a real media man .But far from our greatest driver ....

  • as far as im concerned he is just one less dickhead commodore driver on the road. :)

  • What a dogfight! It's too bad the Holden lost (although I gather from swagonwheels the loss was temporary). This makes me miss the days when Aussie V8s went up against all the imports on the track.

  • great piece of racing.

  • A very selective piece of film that. The fact is, Brocky made an error before that corner, he later took back the lead from the BMW as easily as he was doing in the initial part of that film. The BMW broke down and didn't even finish the race.

  • The following year Peter Brock swaped over to the M3 after his falling out with Holden.

  • @FordFalconXE351 Why did Brock fall out with Holden?

  • @21Wook75 Brocks fallout with Holden was over a few issues with his special vehicles.Fitting an item in his road cars called a Energy Polarizer, releasing the VL director without Holden getting to test the vehicle first and the one that really made GMH was the fact that Brock was aiming to market his road cars to overseas. That was all happening through 86 till 87,by the time he was given the race win at Bathurst in 87,Holden were no longer sponsoring him or supplying him with road cars.

  • Too much chassis .. too much brakes ... the BMW will always beat the pushrod shitbox Holden.

  • WTF!! dat 4 cylinder bmw beat dat 8 cylinder holden!! now i know how shit holdens are!!

  • Lucky the holden keeps up that well actually, bloody tanks on wheels lol

  • that sux why here in australia do they do this to imported engines, look what they did to the gen3 v8 in earlier hsv's, its bullshit, but c'mon we all know holden (&ford) are production line made cars and they are cheap but they got all the style power and in the world and with a v8 are an awesome car (in my books-im not a holden supremisist) but they have a awesome racing record and in the bathurst 24hr beat the world.

  • You assume that it was a real holden that raced there, which it absolutely was not - like the V8 supercars the Monaro CV8 was a pure bred racer, not even built by Holden, but by Garry Rogers Motorsport (so it's really a GRM Monaro CV8). It had a 7-litre Chev V8, race brakes, Ford diff, sequential gearbox - try and find that in your street-going Monaro!

The 24 hour finishes were choreographed to buggery - earlier in the race the damn things were short-shifting!

    It's a joke, I tell you.

  • also did u guys all know, that when all bmws are imported into australia the government take its it orginal BMW chip and chucks i a slower comp chip so it cant get past cops... for example in other countries around the world like lebanon or germany, the BMWS are the fastest cars on the road cause the leave the chip in

and did u also know that BMW ranks the 3rd fastest car in the world after the lambo and ferrari

fuk aust bmws there slower than ny bmw around the world

  • What are you talking about you sped. We get the same power outputs as the Germans, you muppet.... and what model is that "3rd fastest car in the world"?

  • shows 2 prove, that because of BMWS top of the line engineering... a 4cyl bmw beats a v8 cheap holden... e30's were the most successful bmws ever made from their light body and super fast motors... dosnt matter about hp or kw, its the ratio

Holdens are dopy fuked companies that shuck in the shittest motor in the same cars

  • Despite the rhetoric, the fact remains. BMW kicked everyone's arse that year (1987) winning the Touring Car Championship. Hmm they did it in 1985 also with the 635CSi again driven by Jim Richards

  • Lazza, Why would people allow historic fact get in the way of bullshit LOL.

  • Yeah, never let the facts get in the way of a bullshit story...especially when it's a V8. LOL

  • bmw all the way! type ' bmw vs holden 'and watch the VE vs M5 :P

  • yeah exactly, theres a saloon car racing series on sbs i think that only race factory cars and when i was watching it the hsv vz clubsport was easily dominating but the v10 bmw was right on its arse and dont even get me started on the falcon gt being beaten by a vy v6 (engine worked ofcourse)in the same race but between the vk and the bmw on this video you can easily see the difference if the vk was racing at its full potential brocky wouldve walloped richards,

  • yeah but i think that it takes a good driver to drive the shit out of a production car and mix things up a bit....it would also help out the manufacturers by bringing the performnce levels of cars closer to what the public is buying showing real problems performance and quality etc......just a thought

  • on the week end the hsvs flogged the m3 and evos at bathurst.

and by the way the old racing minis used to keep up with the v8s...so saying that this M3 was better the commodore is crap. in a straight line race..V8 all the way

  • now thats how racing should return too, nowadays holden and ford or "falcadores" at bathurst is like watching those electric scale model cars that you get for chritmas just go round and round there is no real difference anymore......i reckon they should do production supercars and just get a gt against a clubsport no mods and let the boys go hell for leather

  • i think you will find that the race is between the drivers.... not the car

  • BUGATTI ITALIANO POWER EUROPEO Engine

    Type: Quad-Turbocharged W16

Displacement cu in (cc): 488 (7993)

Power bhp (kW) at RPM: 1001(736) / 6000

    Torque lb-ft (Nm) at RPM: 923(1250) / 2200-5500

    Redline at RPM: 6500

    Brakes & Tires

    GAME OVER BRMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • simmonds plains has always been a good track, it's a good, fast track, especially the back straight. in the V8's how fast do ya go? 250km/h? or 270 km/h?

  • dickhead, that v8 engine would piss all over tha bmw if it was a 5ltr with double row timing chain with a roller cam if made then

  • both vehicles are VERY close but for those who bag the commodore, fuck you, its a 16v single cam 4.9ltr v8 vs the lighter 4cyl 16v twin or quad? cam engine in lighter body, its still bloody fast though against it but id rather a 6ltr hsv over a 5ltr v10 anyday even though bmw is a nice car for some ppl

  • got that right. a 4 cyliner BMW fuked a 8 cyliner holden! WAT A DISCRASE!!!

  • You do realize, that the rules of the series encourage parity? The cars are changed and modified to make it so that it's an even playing field. So of course the Holden isn't dominating, the idea is that they're equal.

That's why they changed it in '93, it was getting out of hand.

  • then your a fool comodores dont steer they dont stop they fall apart the build quality is crap .bmw wins on every point (I owned a 02 ss fully optioned biggest piece of crap ive owned 50k waste..a beemer for same $ much better

  • Bmw's are all about using cutting edge engineering and technology to make reliable power, they are spectacular cars. The only solution holden engineers can come up with to create more horsepower is increasing engine size! You get what you pay for no matter what anything costs

  • BMW's a good car but I wouldn't take anything away from Holden, their day in the sun lasted a lot longer than BMW.

  • wake up mate bmw have been winning races a lot longer holden .

  • bemers suk balls

  • Call it a rip off, you see how the M3 with less then half the engine capacity still kicks the Commodore V8's ass!

  • you can pay about 80K to get a holden v8 worked with well over 1000 horsepower or pay more than double the price to get 500 horsepower from a bmw......beamers are nice cars but a complete rip off

  • Had a chat to Frank Gardener in 86 and he said those 4pots used to last the season ! Had two rapped in plastic as spares but never used.

  • nice footage, the S14's were a gun engine no doubt especially with jimbo behind it,thanks for posting

  • great racing...one thing to keep in mind tho i know which one was a lot cheaper as a road car and a race car...can u guess which one?

  • This M3 E30 has a 2.3 Litres four-cylindre-engine ... The Race-Versions had about 300HP.

  • that was awesome! but yeah, i lost some respect for the holden after watching this. the holden should be flying past the bmw in the straight.

  • holdens r shit crap next to a bmw!!! that m3 e30 will shit on the holden anyday. lol a v8 holden couldnt even keep up with a v6 bmw... wats goin on??? i think that the holden did get beaten out by daylights and it was shit all over by that machione bmw!!!

  • Whatever helps you sleep at night dude!

  • hey dickhead, bmw dont make a v6, they make straight sixes. if u ever had one you'd know that. so go play with your mums barina fuckwit.

  • The BMW is a four cylinder.

Also something many are missing is that the Group A Holden motor was somewhat restricted in terms of rpm due to the cam chain setup they were forced to run, so this would have further negated any power difference between it and the BMW.

  • The fact that the Holden did fairly well against the "far bigger" european car manufactures is pretty damn good if ya ask me, this also reminds me of the more recent Bathurst 24 hour races where the Holden Monaro's killed everything, those cars built by Garry Rogers team have gotta be some of the most realiable cars ever built for a enduro race.

  • go and buy a 427 monaro mate .good luck finding one .production car my arse they were a special build 2 only i believe ?

  • I wouldn't say he had the daylights beaten out of him. I think he was doing good to hold out that long on such a short track where he could be out cornered. On the longer tracks the BMW wouldn't be able to keep up like that.

  • Rick Kelly should watch this

  • Just look at Holden's record winning reputation at the mountain before the choreographed races of V8 Super-cars, which are designed to divide, therefore creating two groups of fans, with the real story being the conquering of the hard earned dollars of the fans through high sales of all their costly merchandise.

  • Your comments here swagonwheels are pretty spot on,although I don't believe they are choreographed but everything else I would have to agree with.I still enjoy watching V8 supercars because Ford/Holden are both fairly even.

  • Yeah but its becoming a bit depressing sitting on the couch for 7 Ours and only getting to see 2 Makes for the whole race. It isn't as exciting as seeing a mixed-bag of BMW's, Fords, Holdens, Chevy's(Why Not) and of course a Nissan or two. The Bathurst 1000 should be a showcase of the best Touring Cars in the World but instead we only have two Highly-Modified sedans... And I can honestly say we can have much more cars than just 27-31 up the mountain. I remember that a field of 46 was the norm.

  • the bs started in the 70's the whole ford holden con .holdens record at the mountain is bs . what a joke ford and holden .wake up australia you have been bent over and well and truly screwed .lmao every time i see some drongo in a holden racing or ford racing shirt .

  • 2 great cars, 2 great drivers. thanks for the post. shits all over todays ford holden crap that passes for touring car. bloody redneck hilbillies

  • Those so called super cars only look like a Holden and a Falcon, but are in fact, pure bred race cars, with not one actual factory component belonging to any vehicle. Today's races are a farce. More like a travelling circus.

  • I think the racing in group A was good but for me group C was my favourite era.Johnsons XD-Es, Moffats XA-C coupes and RX7,Brocks VK and A9Xs,Furys Bluebird,Bartletts Camaro all great cars plus like group A all the different classes with Escorts,Geminis,Celicas

    corollasetc..

  • Great, and road seemes soo narrow. Symmonds Plains is a great circuit for producing racing battles. It has greatest hairpin in the world. I remember in 1994, I think, Brok v Perkins here battled in their commodores nose to tail for lap after lap. I love this track.

  • superb - oh for racing like that again

  • Now that is what i call racing...brilliant!

  • oh man....now i want an E30!

  • Great race! Symmonds Plains is certainly still around to this day. It is located in northern Tasmania.

  • fuck i didnt know the bmw engine spec but the commodore was never going to hold up forever being a heavier car, where the m3 brakes better?

  • the beemer loaned itself well to simmonds plains lighter, better brakes and much better suspension and lets not forget not a hell of alot slower either. very nice machines.

  • wow that a nice race)

  • Now that's what you call dicing ,this track still around ?

  • its simmonds plains O_o i assumed it was obvious?

  • they may have, but still, a carburated sohc 5 litre 2 valve per cylinder engine in a holden frame, is going to have problems matching the power/weight ratio of a m3 using fuel injection and 4 valves per cylinder with dohc.

  • The commodore wasn't as light as an M3 but was certainly a light car though. Not to mention the 4.9 litre motor putting it into a class where it could run substantially more rubber than a 3 litre class car like the M3, without a massive minimum weight hike.

Symmons plains is something of a power track too. IMO, Brock should have been hosing the M3 on that track in particular.

Were they dicing for podium positions, or the win though?
