I think everyone should use the grip they are most comfortable with. When I started playing, I was using an Eastern FH grip, but I wasn't very consistent. When I switched to the Semi-Western,first of all it came very natural to me, also it gave me more consistency, accuracy and control. Also, I think it worked because I'm pretty short (5ft10). But again, I believe you can hit very good topspin FHs with an Eastern grip, it just depends what comes natural for you.
I am a tennis coach from australia, great technique, but I would recommend getting the head of the racquet much further below the height of the ball before contact to increase topspin :D
@wonhoyoung True to a certain degree, although most newbies and recreational players simply hit through the ball, thereby creating a relatively flat shot. This video is meant to teach you to impart MORE topspin.
Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, and safe, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some say they hear, do it.
but just wondering if u used ur wrist power for the very fast upward movement of the racket head or u dun use wrist power. if not what arm muscle do you use?
@littleprayerbyjacks You dont use any arm muscles dynamically, except for the ones in the lower arm for the wrist. You mostly use your biceps to hold the angle between your lower and upper arm, it's like stopping midway in a bicepscurl ;) The most important muscles in your upper body is of course shoulders, pecs (and of course stomach and lower back muscles) when doing a forehand
@joakim456 actually, to hit the best forehand possible you need to have your arm fully extended at contact. This removes the inconsistency of the angle of your arm. If you watch the best forehands in the world most of the time their arm will be straight at contact. Federer is a prime example of this. Nadal even with his extreme grip manages to have his arm straight at contact, which gives him more leverage and takes unnecessary stress off his arm.
@Nicr1991 I didnt say that the arm should have an angle. I said your biceps has to work in the same way as when you stop midways in a bicepcurl, therefore your biceps doesnt work dynamically, statically (if that's the proper word in english). Its the same with the triceps. And when nadal and fed hits a forehand they dont fully extend the arm, but pretty damn close. This is because it would hurt the joint to completely lock out the elbow. Comprende?
i think it's easy for me to picture it right handed i just picture it righty and put in the arrows then try it out without a racket to get the jist of it
thats weird i do it a diffrent way and still get a large topspin......i swing normaly but when i hit the ball i kinda twist the racket downward at the last second and the ball makes almost a upside down u in midair after the net......is this normal or should i try topspin like they show it?
@joshua1marcelo well I have played a couple players who use Prince but for the most part the tennis players I know dont really like the feel of the O3 technology (many have demoed but not purchased). I played with the Prince O3 tour through most of high school and my first year of college, but when I changed to Dunlop I was really surprised and I definitely think the racquets improved my game. I currently use the Dunlop Aerogel 4D 300.
@oryx032000 I prefer the Semi - Western because it has a little more variety. I can hit with the same amount of spin using the full and semi western but you can't flatten the ball out with the full western as effectively.
@oryx032000 yeh but along with your elbow pains comes the struggle with lower bouncing shots, with a western grip good luck picking the ball up and over the net effectively
@TheLeilisa any size is good for tennis.look at domonika cibulkova for example. she is 5'2 and she made a run to the quarters in the us open.im 5'7 and i can play pretty well=D
Not true, it doesn't necessarily travel higher over the net. You can hit with a lot of topspin but hit it lower over the net 2, just depends what kind of shot you're trying to hit.
Topspin is a major weapon, especially for baseliners... I use heavy topspin because know I can't produce the type of power some of the other guys on my team can.... if you can't go for power, be fast, be precise, and spin the damn ball like it's a jet turbine!!!
Not sure who she is and I am sure she is a great player, but you should use a player that has extension at the point of contact and after, her elbow is way to bent. Also the way you show the grip is to confusing, specially when you see her in the ready position with the racquet almost facing flat to the ground, and although you are right about the weight moving form the back foot to the front foot, she doesn't really do this ... you know your tennis, but the video doesn't match what you say
one thing i've noticed is that i think she's using a windshield wiper forehand 1:57 - 2:34 that's why her elbow is bent.
about the grip, we have the same grip, my coach taught me to face the racquet flat down to the ground (like in the vid) when in ready position if using semi-western. i won't go into details (because there are only 175 characters left) but that's the way it is. well, it still depends on the player where she/he is comfortable at.
What if you're basic forehand has enough spin for it to go about 1 to 2 meters above the net and still drop safely and consistently on to the court? Should I try to make more spin or should I just keep hitting my forehand like I usually do?
@longnhardstuff If you can generate an extreme amount of topspin you can get tighter angles cross-court, which is good for getting guys out wide or just getting a nice winner. It's also a good weapon for beating guys at the net, in the right situation that fast arcing loop can take the ball right out of their striking zone and is less risky than a full lob.
It's nice to throw in an extreme topspin shot once in a while anyway because the different bounce can put guys off.
@freedomsstain By the way I forgot to tell you, my forehand was around 80 mph last year so I'm geussing that now it's around 90-100 if I'm lucky. So I'm usually the pusher and win lots of points in my indoor academy with them. So I found out recently that I should just keep playing the way I usually do, so that I can just win points with the strokes, and occasionally a volley, but I'm wondering about the future.
shouldnt they of had the guys do the topspin forehand and not the girls? girls hit much more flat than men. besides do the guys suck more than the girls at this academy?
startobe07 you clearly know nothing about tennis if u think professional tennis players don't use a closed stance! The closed stance is the preffered stance of an agrrssive attacking style of play as body weight is shifted forward onto the leading foot! open stance is only used when there is limted time to get the feet in place and if the player is on the run and reaching for a wide ball! so u might want to sort ur own tennis knowledge out before u throwing comments that are complete rubbish!
where is the OPEN STANCE?? NO ONE in professional tennis playes with a closed stance! ... how bad is this? If you talk so much in regards topspin, talking about an open stance is much more important than talking about "bending your knees".
OK guys. If you don't like my opinion, I'm going to have to SHOW you that the topspin forehand is... It's what I think it is... If you don't agree, show me why...
Many disagree with you and it is perhaps due to the words you use to describe the idea - it sounds really imaginative and more of subjective matter than an objective observation.
Nonetheless, do not take my comment as a disagreement as it is actually a proof, a logical demonstration based on physics of dynamics, which supports your idea of wrist movement. It is little, not voluntary, but it still is a movement.
@CheyenneVonZee lets clear the myth about different grips....i believe it doesnt matter what grip you use but how you "hit" the ball enough said....grip is simply for your own comfort
@aleksandar10981 Federer, Sampras, Graf, Evert, Connors, Lendl, Becker, Davenport, Serena hit with an eastern grip. Eastern forehand is the true grip of champions. :)
@hajime2k LOL, true! But it's still amazing how much topspin a player like Rafa generates. He uses an extreme western grip, which practically makes the racquet face completely horizontal! Awesome stuff!
@CheyenneVonZee you can get topspin with eastern by changing your swing pattern, but semi western makes it easier to get good topspin and have a shorter swing time.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I think that the topspin forhand and backhand comes from the rist. Please, if someone shows interest, I could upload a video to demonstrate it...
Lol i would love to see ur wrist produce as much topspin as one of my shots using (me using a western grip of course;P) *btw dont break ur wrist now ;P
I also use the western grip hersh94 I was trying to say that the rist flips behind you when you start the shot. And when you're about to hit the ball, along with the acceleration of the arm, the rist comes from behind and you add more power and spin if you want to the ball...
The wirst action you roughly describ is due to the accelration and rotation combined. It does whips around a bit, but it is not a conscious movement. To get the picture, imagine a semi with something huge behind, like a gaz tank or some commercial stuff. The longer, the most obvious the physics principles will come to be to your mind; 18 wheels is long enough though.
Have it speed up in straight line and then suddenly turn. What happens with the load behind?
In the end, the flexion point allows the longer part to come forward as it drifts when the trcuk makes the sudden charp turn.
With tennis, the idea involves a z axis as well; it's not only bidirectional as it also happens in the other axis. The dynamic inertia carries the hand forward and bend your wrist.
A good shot is all about driving the racket upward and forward; no wrist action at all - not even keeping it locked. It's a wrist REACTION, not an actual action which occurs here.
just one comment, it would be good if they showed an example with a right hander as well, because i found trying to relate to the left handed example a bit difficult.
top spin is not for beginners. It just gives more margin for error compared to a flat shot. Plus top spin shots can be controlled more easily to push opponents back and fore . plus u can force opponents into making errors easily when u have consistent top spin stokes
