One thing I noticed (and loved, personally) about every Sara Bareilles lyrics video so far, is that there are no "Thumb if you're watching this in 2012" or jokes about the dislike button. The comments seem to have an air of maturity to them. Why can't all videos be like this? This is awesome!

To her, the next best thing is settling for a love like that simply because it is what is considered the 'perfect fairytale love,' and, ultimately, being unsatisfied with her life. Ergo, the best thing in her opinion would be to pursue her dreams, and be who she wants to be completely, and not held back by a stereotypical romance she, PERSONALLY, isn't satisfied with.
Personally, I think what she's saying is that she wants something more out of love, other than what some might consider a typical 'fairytale' ending. Meaning, she wants to be strong and independent of her partner, but nevertheless be loved and supported by said partner. And that she would forgo her fairytale if it meant sacrificing who she is to submit to a man who doesn't respect her, and who she's doesn't feel completed by.
So since I see so many interpretations of what people think it is, I was gonna share mine. Then I thought about it doesn't matter what I think or how I take the song. That's the beauty of music. It's whatever I want it to be, whatever I need it to be. And you can take it however you want to! Lyrics are always going to speak to different peoples situations differently. Either way I love this song, and I find it to be deep and to the heart of things!

I think it is about how these poor girls are waiting on the next best thing cause they take whatever comes next cause they been waiting so long. Then they get a guy telling fairytales on how great they will be together and how much he loves her and how great he is. But then he never comes home anymore, and he just isnt all that great. So why wait for the next best thing, maybe take the guy at the liquar store like Cinderella did at the start of the song, or just wait longer. Or just sleep :)

I think this song kind of gives a different message then some people think:
It might point out that in fairytales the prince always saved the princess, but is it really love? Or is it simply the happily ever after that some people imagine or wish to be true?
In reality, there is no such thing as a "fairytale love", simply people working hard to "get out of their towers" and "find their prince/princess".
But that's just my opinion XD

wasnt this about, even if you find your fairytale, it doesnt stop there with an easy walk into the horizon ending? from the way the artist explains as well the lyrics, i thot it was talking about how the perfect guy isnt always perfect forever, and as the story ends, the satisfaction we supposedly are taught to feel from the fairytale ending eventually fades along with the glamor of it.
either that or the real happy ending starts with a story that doesnt start like a fairytale

I love this song!! I like the fact that she plays on the fairytales that most girls live their lives by. I know I did until i heard this song. The way I see it this song is talking about the age old factor of women trying to get "the next best thing". The guy she thinks she can get (who isn't worth two cents aka all the jerks) or the guy ranked highest on the social chain (the selfish ego maniacs aka prince charm) . When in reality she should be aiming for what she diserves. Someone who will take care of her and truely love her till death do u part. I think it is about how these poor girls are waiting on the next best thing cause they take whatever comes next cause they been waiting so long. Then they get a guy telling fairytales on how great they will be together and how much he loves her and how great he is. But then he never comes home anymore, and he just isnt all that great. So why wait for the next best thing, maybe take the guy at the liquar store like Cinderella did at the start of the song, or just wait longer. Or just sleep :)
