An independent agent is not limited to just 1 company like a "captive" agent such as a AAA, Farmer's, or other agents. A true independent agent/ broker has access to over 1,500 companies without having quotas. No fees as a rule either. I have worked this way myself as a broker for 19 of my 29 yrs. in insurance.

I love that Travelers is pushing the Independent Agency system. Too many of your competitors have turned their backs on the independent agents that helped them succeed for the last 50 years... Thank you!
