When i was a little kid, i was at a farm and these bird were everywhere. They did the broken wing act and i would follow them and they would lure me far away from the field where a guess their eggs were. It tricked me!
I wonder if there has been any mean people that have ever spotted a killdeer doing this bit...and was like...."here let me put you out of your misery" *squash*.....or....." why fake it ?? I'll give you a broken wing for real"......I bet that's happened before.
I tried this. Dad, mom and two chicks. We (mom and me) followed the chicks, then the mother went the other way and flapped her wing and we saw the babies and dad run the other way.
I just heard this bird existed 10 minutes ago from the show "Kenny vs. Spenny", in which Kenny uses "Kildeer" as a codeword for faking to break his leg in an ice skating competition. Fascinating, just shows how smart animals actually are!
It pretends it has a broken wing to lead you away from the nest/chicks. When we were kids, we used to catch the babies (who run really fast) by going in the opposite direction the parents were going. No, we did not hurt the babies...just looked at them, put them down, and let them go back to mom and dad.
And no, birds don't abandon chicks who have been handled by humans.

Isn't that amazing that even birds know how to trick predators to help save their babies!

very cool. I work for a railroad and they love nesting in between the rails (the eggs are camoflouged (sp) by the ballast.

But it sure helps the predators smell where can be found!

@machikoneko I hope so cause it's illegal
Hunte9753 1 year ago
@Hunte9753 I don't worry about what's legal- only moral. The babies weren't hurt. and it word be terrible to hurt them. I love killdeer.

Great video but can you explain why it feigns a brokern wing? I have some video of a bluejay we raised that you might want to check out.

The broken wing act is a self-defensive move against predators/carnivores
