I love the way the banjer player swoops his neck each time the fiddle/violin slides a note and watches so intensly at his musical parter. What I got from this post was the way he feels every note and sound and expresses it. That golden connection is a rare thing and the sweetest place to be musicaly
You're asking a non-musician?? lol!! To my knowledge - it's how and under what circumstances it's played, say, with an orchestra, it would be a violin. On waltz numbers, I personally consider it one and the same. Anybody else want to jump in here?
@pmb003 gingermc was right it's about the way it's played. technically they're the same instrument but you don't play mozart on a fiddle or bluegrass on a violin.

@2ndfret An old guy in Texas defined the difference about 1890. He said that anything that costs more than $10.00 is a violin.
