  • I thought this sounded familiar---Crown International reused this music four years later in their "The Beach Girls".

  • I like this movie a lot better than most big box office smashes. Especially better than movies from the last 10 years. Most popular movies are overrated in my opinion. Malibu Beach is fun and puts you in a good mood. I can watch Malibu Beach over and over again. I can't stand to watch movies like Titanic or Avatar.

  • @LedWilde I agree, these 70's "b-movies" beat just about anything going now. Every time I watch this movie, I want to be in it! R.I.P. Steve Oliver

  • Exactly! You want to be in it! Fun movies. Ever see Van Nuys Blvd.? Didn't know about Steve Oliver aka Dugan. R.I.P.

  • @cheapcape It should also be noted that THIS was when women in movies still had REAL breasts ( weather they were small, medium, or large ). Not the case in movies and tv shows madeTODAY, .. especialy if they've got a beach setting.

  • The original Dazed and Confused films! I still have all of these on VHS from their time, man do I miss films like these.

  • @TelevisionTrash ---- I'm surprised this entire genre hasn't been revisited in contemporary cinema, similar to the way certain directors overtly reference the various exploitation films they grew up with. One could argue that ANY movie (or TV show) dealing with aimless SoCal youth is a descendent of these pictures, but I'd disagree, as these were much more pure and simple. To date, Linklater seems to be the only one who knew their uniqueness could be recaptured.

  • @Coolestmovies But before these flicks there was that Frankie and Annet stuff from the sixties,.. so these were sort of a revival themselves. Then there was that Baywatch stuff during the 90's,.. but that wasn't quite the same thing. The characters in movies like this were more like real people anyway.

  • @Skulldini -- These movies didn't descend from the Beach Party movies of the 60's. Those weren't reflective of the actual youth culture of the time. They WERE, however, reflective of the way the older, conservative generation (i.e. PARENTS) believed the youth generation SHOULD be, and thus were deemed safe and clean. Those movies actually played better with pre-teens and early-to-mid-teens (much like, say, High School Musical did this past decade) who naively believed them to be predictive.

  • @Skulldini --- I'd say the 70's SoCal T&A beach movies -- which were fairly limited in number and nowhere near as successful as the Beach Party movies -- were slight cousins to the Frankie & Annette fare, and then only because of similar settings and similar character motivations (which are fairly common across these types of films). They weren't really revivals, more like evolutions, since teen sex movies never stopped being made between the 60s and 70s - they just became more open-minded. ;)

  • @Coolestmovies Your right, evolution is a better word than revival. But I'm not aware of any notable beach films made during the late 60's & early 70's ( before Jaws I guess ). It seems to me that there was something of a dry spell for a period there.

  • @Skulldini Oh, I mentioned Jaws there even though I know it's hardly the same kind of movie. But it did seem to kind of re-establish the beach as a popular movie setting and, in a way, may've helped pave the way for late 70's fare like this.

  • @Skulldini --- Possibly, I'll grant you that. I still think these 70's sex comedy-dramas were simply evolutions of core concepts of exploitation fare that dated back decades (Beach Party, 50's Juvie B-movies, the sex 'n drug "scare" films of the 30's and 40's). The beach, it's culture and all its accoutrements were just cosmetics of the era, reflective of certain parts of the country & culture, but under that lies the key ingredients that put bums on seats: hot people, sex, drugs, cars, etc.

  • @Coolestmovies what was some other teen 70s films???

  • @Toxiejunkie -- Here's a few worth seeking out: THE VAN VAN NUYS BLVD. THE POM POM GIRLS THE CHEERLEADERS (and it's two sequels) H.O.T.S. MALIBU HIGH THE TEACHER ROLLER BOOGIE BEST FRIENDS With the exception of ROLLER BOOGIE, all of these can be found in various compilation DVD sets from Mill Creek, like the Too Cool For School Collection, or Drive In Cult Classics sets.
  • @Skulldini --- That's why I said 'teen sex comedies" instead of "notable beach films". Strip away the bikinis (heheh!), the beach, the vans, and all that stuff, and you're left with fairly common teen sex plotlines that have been recycled annually from pretty much the early 60's onwards to today, either in PG or R rated form, and, encompassing BOTH the Beach Party AND the 70's So-Cal beach movies. What you might have seen as a dry spell was simply a change of location for same plots. :D

  • Hey, anyone want to watch, go to my channel!!!

And CoolestMovies, I think this was made in 1979 haha :)

  • Not quite. It opened in May, 1978. Perfect summer drive-in fare, although I suspect it was shot during a much cooler season. In some of those early morning shots, the exhaust from the cars is a bit heavy! I'll bet that water wasn't as inviting as it looked! LOL
