  • Time changed guys. India is expected to grow 9% while China is to grow 8% in 2010.

  • I read next 100 years, India has been mentioned like twice in the whole 350 pages. With all due respect for Friedman, I don't think he has even given India sufficient thought. When it comes to western affairs, he dwells deeply into all the nuances but only skims those of Asian countries accept China and Japan. And lastly, he uses certain standard economic indicators but does not analyse economy as deeply as he does military and diplomacy, even though economy is the basis for the other two.

  • the 'democracy' that india proud of will bring india down, lol what a developing nation needs is a strong government

  • india is not country just like america uniteeed states REMEMBER WHERE CORPORATIONS ARE RUNNING THIS THAT LAND

  • Friedman hit the bull's eye!

India is a cocktail of hundreds of nations.

No wonder, only 2 per cent of the population paid income taxes in 2008.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the British emulated the Mughal governance model to maintain stability in south Asia.

In 1950, per capita income of India was 3 per cent of USA.

In 1975, per capita income of India was 2 per cent of USA.

In 2000, per capita income of India was 1 per cent of USA.

The nation is dying, yet hallucinating.

  • I bought Friedman's book The Next 100 Years, in it there is not one word about India. He never mentions India, obviously he doesn't rate India. "India Shining" has morphed into India Fading.

  • This is a stupid analysis. Compare states like Newyork,California with states like Alabama,Louisiana. Is there not a difference in state wise growth. In India some states are growing faster and others are catching up. Army, Navy and Airforce are controlled by the state government. I don't see any logic in arriving at this analysis. Why Would Mexico or Turkey do better than India?

  • balz india made by brits????they ruined us not made us.

  • they didnt ruin you..........there was nothing to ruin. but what they did do was violate people's human rights.........

  • India's services-oriented economy is inherently more resilient and adaptable than China's manufacturing-based economy.

As for India being a British invention, has Friedman forgotten the invention of America from a group of colonies? Look at the inexorable entropic effects of immigration, both legal and illegal, on the American polity. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

  • Even chinese economy as taken a turn for the worse now. Its expected to grow around 8% gdp.

Though I agree with a few things that have been said here, there are many i do not agree with.

He totally forgot that India has been growing fast ever since the reforms in 1990. India's growth isn't just something that happened. Expect this growth to continue for atleast another 20 years.

Whether or not it will benefit everyone is the only concern.

  • It'd be incorrect to state that India is a British invention. Please refer to the geographical extent of Maurya, Gupta, Slave Dynasty and Mughal empires. It'd also be incorrect to say that India's central govt only handles foreign policy. It usually passes the buck on to state govts but intervenes very strongly, whenever its authority is challenged. True, doing business in India can be difficult but that is partly due to the legacy of British bureaucracy and its own Third World work ethic.
