I was talking about exactly 6:00 minutes "the English always have to have a name for every goddam thing" We were never the ones labeling anything we were just making music and experimenting with sounds, only when the MEDIA etc get whiff of things the a "name" is given , at the end of the day everyone was just making music and of course people jump on things but the innovators for these sub-genres will always stand out.
Maxi...I don't think Derrick meant any disrespect to your side of the Atlantic. Over here it was simple in 1988...there was detroit techno, chicago house, and NY garage...the sound was kindbased geographically. When I took a break from mixing in '93 and moved to NY I'd run into various DJs telling me what records were hot now. I had no idea what the hell they were talking about...all this subgenres...
not at all. thats what drove me away from the scene in the nineties. nyc underground house virtually sounded the same. and the rave music sounded just like what dave borell said-people bringing the high of ectasy to process on a record. and do we need a whole bunch of sub genres of house to sell it was ridiculous. one time it was up to over 80 genres under the umbrella of house(thankfully most of the sub genres died off.)

Derrick May has a point! Leave those names and sub-genre names to the marketing departments. Don't believe the hype! From a life long Londoner.

Black people still do. However, the mass majority are independent artists who are most well known by the underground.

yeah, derrick is spot on. there are too many sub-genres in music! some music don't have a genre, and that's that!!
ricdarhythm 3 years ago 15
soon, you have as many subgenres as there are artists.

I dunno Maxi. I'm English, been clubbing for years and I have to agree with Sir Derrick May on this one.

...And of course you know the title of that track is a code for "Eben E's Are Good " right?
