There are mashines clearing the bicycle ways and streets, several times a day. They also spread salt on them for the grip. I ride my bike all year through. There are however some days, where its really icy. Then it takes me way more time to get to work, but that would be the same with a car.
Actually, with a car you can get stuck in bad traffic jams on such days. With a bike, you can just step off it and walk critical parts, or even take it on the "tram".
@aliciverici There really isn't much of on other side of the coin... people will get on their bikes, also when the road is covered with snow or icy from snow that got flattened by car tires...

If you go to Amsterdam, YOU ARE A FOOL not to bring your own bicycle. If you wanna rent one of those heavy-ass bikes just to get on the road, go for it. I ALWAYS bring my super-power, hybrdized, composite metal, dual-suspension bicycle. My bicycle is a prostetic extention of my body :-)
@Harregarre well in the tourists defence... your bike traffic is unlike anything we have ever seen! you are fortunate to live in the most beautiful and unique city I have ever seen, I cant wait to return there.
Everybody who visits AMsttradam should rent or steal a bike. You don't really experience the city until you do it. Ride a bike that is. -- Hack music choice, yet oddly appropriate. -- Oh yeah, and ride in the freakin bike lanes. That's why the people on the scooter are staring. Tourists who go outside the lines piss off the Dutch.
I did go there, but I never rented a bike since it was so confusing and fast paced.
I use drugs responsibly, in a coffee shop or in the safety of my hotel... but thanks for wishing me luck anyhow. Too bad they recently banned shrooms though, I made it just before the ban ;)

Totally agree with romeo9k. You can always spot a tourist by looking at the incompetent way they handle their bikes around those lanes. :P
