It's a shame we can't do this in today's society. Things might be better if we could. Less crime, less welfare, less unemployment...it would work out for everyone.
The young idealist does not seem to mind owning slaves, or having an overseer to supervise them, but he hamstrings the overseer's ability to do his job. He needs to make up his mind on the issue.
his mind is made up but its also a dramatic presentation and they are trying to get the audience to side with Orry by making him more human despite the circumstances

this is a little naive, they usually whipped slaves on plantations for misbehaving. still a great miniseries though.
