Awesome song by an incredible band. This brings back memories I would like to forget, but that will never happen. 20 years ago, I was in love with my best friend’s wife, and I am still not over her. I think about her almost every day, and I cannot get over what I did to my best friend. If it was not for "that little gold ring", I would be married to her today.
@Aramis6849 I was at that concert (as well as a number of Beach Boys concerts). It was awesome. I had some of it on cassette tape once upon a time. Don't now what happened to it.
Doesnt sound like bekiblu liked my comment. The Roots play their instruments on tour . They just wanted a better sound on their records. Lots of big stars used the Wrecking Crew and were damn glad the were around to be on their records. just sayin.
Truth be told it was the Wrecking Crew that play the instruments on most of those hits. The Grass Roots were a made up deal like the Monkees. But they did let the guitarist Creed Bratton play with them because he was pretty good. Wiki Wrecking Crew folks. They played on dozens of hit records in the 50's 60's and 70's. Every thing from the theme to Bonanza ,Green Acres, Batman to Sonny and Cher, Beach Boys etc etc. Glen Campbell was there ace guitar player and played guitar on hundreds of hits.
I find it funny at how few had listen to the part (the little gold ring she wear on hand). I said he is singing it to a married woman and someone said, "NO!" After all this years. It's got to be the music, we don't listen to the words. LOL
The little gold ring you wear on hand. I had never really paid attention to the song. I just liked the music! He is singing to married woman! Interesting song!
Fun fact: It wasn't originally even by The Grass Roots! It was originally a demo recording by Evergreen Blues Band, and was written by their manager, Lou T. Josie.
I first saw the grass roots in 1972 and was amazed at all the songs I'd been hearing on the radio that I didn't know were theirs! After that show I always appriciated what realy great talents these guys were. A little pop, mixed with some bubblegum...and a string of Gold Records a mile long!
This is such a good song, It was me and Linda's song then and now she is gone. God Bless her forever. Some of the best memories on my life are wrapped into this song. Thank you for putting it on here for me to hear and remember. I still love you Linda Nedrow from Lincolnway Village!!!

You talk about the wildest thing I ever heard from back at my desk. Can you believe it 1976. Honest to God! comment
The drummer here is Peter Criss from the 70's rock band KISS> Wow look at Peter Criss playing drums here. Peter, grass roots is a better band than KISS. In this band you don't have the back stabber Jewish Gene simmons to deal with
@XYtruck25 i was about to ask you what the gene simmons thing was about as my youngest brother was a kiss fanatic now a nyc police officer.i was from the beach boys four seasons era,and then you had to throw Jewish into the mix? why? i wanted to find out the scoop since i dont know, and now your credibility is shot, and everyone knows your a racist! and im catholic.Grab the next flight to Berlin or Terhan and you will find happyness!love,a dysfunctional catholic!
@beggin1967 When KISS did the reunion tour. Ace and Peter were complaining that Gene promised them more money if they did another year of touring. They toured a 2nd year and Gene never gave them more money. Plus, they were all going to do a new CD together. Well, it turns out and Paul admits to it. Gene and Paul already recorded it with the new members Eric and Tommy. Ace & Peter just did their own songs on. Gene doesn't care about music, he just wants money. Gene is selling KISS caskets.
Love the organ player's ascot.. Anytime you see an ascot on a guy than you know it's the 60s and 70s and so forth.. I pretty much don't wear ties anymore cuz I've gained a fascination and taste for ascots especially old ones haha
Some idiot just sent me an e-mail saying that "Rob Grill got AIDS from Wink Martindale. Where did you get it from?" which is sort of like a prosecutor asking "did you stop beating your wife yet?" (in other words an unanswerable question.) I swear, people online think they can say ANYTHING "because they're anonymous" (they're not) but would NEVER say similar things "in real life".
@hz11287 So it seems. Let's HOPE thye get banned. Why some people feel the need to say things like that, I don't know... (There are certain things I don't like, and I simply avoid them and don't talk about them unless specifically asked. Imagine if everyone went around saying "I HATE X" out of the blue.)
This is such a wonderful song and it's definitely one of my all-time favorites by this fabulous '70's group. Just another great melody that forever stays in your head. Rob and Warren really shine on this song. But then the whole foursome was just terrific. Wish we had a time machine to recapture all the beautiful music that groups like this created for us. Makes you incredibly nostalgic for real music . . . sadly it's seldom created nowadays.
RIP Rob Grill!!! You were a musical genius!!!! To be lead singer for the same group ffor almost 45 years is unheard of. I had the pleasure to see the Grass Roots a few years ago and Rob took the tiime at the end of the show to sign and talk to anyone around. He was a cvlass act and will be missed by many people!!. They had ovve 22 hit songs in a row in the later 60's and early 70's. Something that even the Beatles envied!!!! Thank you for this great posting! Mike
@UnCircumsizedSmegma DO tell... I guess all that stuff about him hitting his head and going into a coma must have been "lies spread by the Zionist-controlled media", right?
All I know is that Rob and the Grass Roots were a great, great band. Songs like this will live on forever, and forever bring back a time in our memories when things were much simpler, and happier for some of us. What Rob or anyone else did or was in their personal life is their own damn business. Life is too short people. When are people gona wake up and realize that it's about the person. Not about how they look, act, talk, etc etc..Enjoy life, one day its gona be gone.
@UnCircumsizedSmegma Hey Shmeg, I hope that YOU die from Aids you friggin hemmerroid! Rob Grill had a stroke and hit his head in a fall! The world lost an incredible musical talent! If you died, the world would lose...............um, NOTHIN?
In the entire history of Rock n' Roll; only 9 bands (including The Beatles) have charted more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots.
They hold the all-time attendance record for a one act U.S. concert of 600,000 people on July 4th, 1982 in Washington, DC.
During a 6-year period (1967-1972) The Grass Roots set a record for being on the Billboard charts an unbelievable 307 straight weeks and have sold over 20 million records worldwide....
Who is the keyboardist in this video? I've looked up the band members, and there are several listed. Can anyone tell when and where this video was recorded? And, Rob Grill is the one playing guitar in the foreground, right? Thanks anyone for any help. This song is terrific!
@zereprd That would be the ultra hunky Warren Entner, whom I was sooo madly in love with. I'm not really sure where this was shot. Yes, Rob is the bass playin' cutie pie rockin' that cool fringed suede jacket and singing the first and third verse -- and the guitar player is none other Creed Bratton -- yes, THAT Creed Bratton from "The Office!"
RIP Rob! First concert I ever went to was the GR's, 3 Dog Night and Steppenwolf, when I was 12. I'm a lifelong fan, and mourn his passing, though his physical suffering is finally over....
@MrMSF7 Yes, it was! And the next Grass Roots album included photos from that show, 3DN recorded Live At The Forum there, and Steppenwolf recorded some of their live album there. So I had great souveniers from it! :)
@rerr2000 Funny you should say that. Because when I first watched The Office my friend couldn't understand why I was laughing so hard at Creed until I finally blurted out "WHAT THE HELL IS CREED BRATTON DOING WORKING IN AN OFFICE?" And explained to them that Creed Bratton is a real person, and that's him, and he really is a drugged out hippy and deviant from the sixties.
Donna Woodruff - spelling might be wrong, but I still remember her every time I hear this song that she sang to me...I wonder where are you now, Donna?
Why don't musicians put their soul in their music anymore? its sad, Im ashamed of wats on the radio now days, i miss tommy james and all the greats really
OMG, I still remember the words, sitting here singing along with them. What a great trip down memory lane. These guys rocked during my high school years.
I've always LOVED bands with two or more vocalists, and these guys were two of the best singers! I saw them when I was 12 or 3, and they were great. I always thought Warren was just TOO handsome! :)
@ez2amuze1 don't feel too bad. as a child i always thought that in the song "lucy in sky with diamonds", by the beatles,...when they say "a girl with kaleidescope eyes"...I thought they said "a girl with colitis goes by"...HAHAHA!!!! (i'm not kidding)
It's hard to believe that Rob Grill is about 67 years old now. I will always remember him the way he looks in this video. I was really young when the Grass Roots were popular but my older brother played their music all the time. Rob Grill was easy on the eye!!!
@Kingsize102 Oh, my, gosh!!! My brother and I saved our allowence and each bought Sting Ray bikes with what we called a BANANA seat. My had sparkles in it and was blue with the high handle bars. This song does bring back very good memories!!!
@webaroos: you'd be amazed at the good ole rock and roll the young crowd knows these days! I chaperone a dance after local football games at our church for the teens and these kids really know the oldies!!!
@chemonurs you got that right. I think some of the young people are starting to discover this great music that I loved back then. It was a different time then.
my dad used to listen to them all the time, and i just heard them on the radio like 2 days ago and i remember like every single song from them, this is a great band.
I think the bands back thensongs made sense , and could sing and play , today's bands are boing and whiney, I wish the recording industry would get off from behind their desks and look for some real talent...
I remember being so in love with some one who was in love with someone else. I'de play this song over and over, get drunk and cry. Great music, great times but I'm so glad I grew up.
Imagine just being 12 and starting middle school, when you thought you had already grown up, and then singing this song. It made me a Rock & Roller forever since the 60s.
The Grass Roots performed at the Civic Center in Amarillo, TX in the mid 90's. When they played this song, it took me immediately back to the 60's when I was in junior high. Some of the best years AND music of my life . . . . . .
lol he im 27 my wife is 26 we love the oldies and actually had this song played for us at our wedding. just because we werent around when it came out doesnt mean we dont like it lol.
Wow! A set of legendary Rogers drums! I wish they were still made but apparently they were discontinued in the early to middle eighties. :( They were some of the best sounding drums in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Sounds great here too, of course!
Saw 'em last nite in Bettendorf Iowa, Rob appeared to be suffering from arthritis or something, as he had to sit for most of the show, but the music was great!
I feel sorry for the youngsters who missed out on this wonderful music, it definitely dates the 60's as a super music period, and the nostalgia is overwhelming.
@prismaticaurora I'm glad that your parents had forsight to let you in on our magical, musical mystery tour, I will try to do the same for my grandkids.
@qwertykyle666 I wasn't 16 in the 60's but I do remember my brothers listening to this music and I totally agree. As much as there is good music nowadays.. it does not compare.
@qwertykyle666 - Never mind, but at least you can hear it now, the vibe from the 60's songs is just so great & different, no great electronic gadgets just good music & lyrics.
@webaroos I never missed out. My parents made sure I knew what good music was and also allowed me to make my own choices. I'm doing the same for my son.
@webaroos While they may have missed the whole "experience" like we had, generations will always enjoy this music. My kids love this music, the Beatles, et al.. this historic era will be passed along generations
@webaroos I grew up listening to this music even though I was born in the mid '70s. I thank God for my mother who would play these oldies all the time. There's nothing like music from this era! Such heart and soul and actual talent. Today's music is pure trash. Shouldn't even be allowed to call it music.
@LadyDi4476 I totally agree. Today's music is horrible. But thank God my parents raised me with this kind of music and beyond, [great taste in music] and I'm 20 years old!
Underrated band...no doubt

OMG, I still remember the words, sitting here singing along with them. What a great trip down memory lane. These guys rocked during my high school years.

I've always LOVED bands with two or more vocalists, and these guys were two of the best singers! I saw them when I was 12 or 3, and they were great. I always thought Warren was just TOO handsome! :)

It's hard to believe that Rob Grill is about 67 years old now. I will always remember him the way he looks in this video. I was really young when the Grass Roots were popular but my older brother played their music all the time. Rob Grill was easy on the eye!!!

Some of the best years AND music of my life . . . . . .

Creed Bratton is in the guitarist for this band! Wild, huh? Any fan of the Office (the American version) enjoys seeing Creed in action.

Wow! A set of legendary Rogers drums! I wish they were still made but apparently they were discontinued in the early to middle eighties. :( They were some of the best sounding drums in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Sounds great here too, of course!

I feel sorry for the youngsters who missed out on this wonderful music, it definitely dates the 60's as a super music period, and the nostalgia is overwhelming.

@webaroos
don't feel too sorry there were some youngsters who had parents that let us in on the rocking music from their youth
however leather fringe should be left to nostalgia ;)

@lali516 i agree.

@qwertykyle666 - Never mind, but at least you can hear it now, the vibe from the 60's songs is just so great & different, no great electronic gadgets just good music & lyrics.

@webaroos I can only agree with you. iI really wonder of today's young people will remember Lady Ga Ga or Justin Bieber with nostalgia......

@webaroos While they may have missed the whole "experience" like we had, generations will always enjoy this music. My kids love this music, the Beatles, et al.. this historic era will be passed along generations

@webaroos I'm glad my parents listen to this type of music.
Because I listen to music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's more than anything.
Oniterian 1 year ago
@webaroos I grew up listening to this music even though I was born in the mid '70s. I thank God for my mother who would play these oldies all the time. There's nothing like music from this era! Such heart and soul and actual talent. Today's music is pure trash. Shouldn't even be allowed to call it music.
LadyDi4476 1 year ago
@LadyDi4476 I totally agree. Today's music is horrible. But thank God my parents raised me with this kind of music and beyond, [great taste in music] and I'm 20 years old!
