i was on a bus when i saw a big man get out of a beattle vw...it was pavrotti going to rehersal at the opera house in san francisco....my eyes were visually entertained as if watch an entire opera. i knew i had seen a genius in action, today's world, if not yesterdays world. but he was dressed as i was in everyday clothing, but he looked as if he were dressed in the performance. what a man..he and Freni are great entertainers...
God smiled on this one particular performance, S.F. 1990, and we were fortunate enough to have recorded it! Absolutely SOARING. Not a once in a lifetime performance but once in eternity.
Young singers take note: these 2 great artists do not let this most emotional duet get in the way of their art. Never forget that your first job is to sing beautifully, that will convey the emotional content given you by the genius of the composer.
@Lovelytenor1 One of the voice teachers at my undergrad always talked about the "cold spot of focus" that you had to maintain during any emotional performance. I did this act at an opera workshop and had such a great connection with my Rodolfo. When we started singing about the first meeting, I really thought we had the exact same image in our heads. Only bad part was having "MIMI!" sung right in my ear, but every mimi deals with that. :-)
@Lovelytenor1 Yes it was! And I am still singing. I'm just beginning my graduate degree in performance at Florida International University in Miami, FL.
@ksmithsoprano Small world! I started my grad work at Fla. State when I was drafted into the Army. I, supposedly, was to go on a Fullbright to study/sing at my teacher's old opera co in, I think, Munich. Oh well!
I gave it up, got married, had kids & did not sing for 25 years. After divorce & losing my job I started back, much too late, & have been doing a little singing. Not a bad pipe!
I listened to your singing. You have a lovely voice. I hope all goes well for you in school.
When the orchestra begins to play this part I always cry... The most beautiful and emotional piece. Pavarotti and Freni superbe Rodolfo e Mimì. I LOVE YOU !!!
@MOGGS1942 Puccini is the master. He takes your heart and throws it around the auditorium-it hurts but we keep wanting more!. Verdi is impressive, Mozart's clever but Puccini knows the way to our hearts
This is beautiful to see luciano pavarotti and mirella freni together, is an obvious charm between them, i see they touch a lot each other and this warm my heart. i love luciano pavarotti so much.
When I listen to this I realize there must be a God, there has to be. I was fortunate in hearing this role sung by Richard Tucker at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia in 1963. It was good but no, nothing like this.
In life, there are times that the perfect pairing happens, the perfect music, both on their game. AMAZING. I can listen to this over and over again and be moved. I love them both.
after i saw RENT, i saw this opera, because it was the basis for the musica, and i was overcome by emotion at the end. i love it!!! i'm going to see it in april.
Well, your first opera, just to get you into the scheme of things, it'd be good to do a nice Gilbert and Sullivan. Pirates of Penzance was my first opera, and I thought it was wonderfully hilarious. If you're already fine with it being in a different language and want to jump into more classical operas, I would recommend Puccini's La Boheme (this one) or Madama Butterfly. Bizet's Carmen is also absolutely amazing, as is Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.
In my humble opinion - Turandot. I love opera. My wife HATES it but she thoroughly enjoyed Turandot. Many, many great arias including the greatest of them all - Nessun Dorma.
No. I would start with Pucinni - almost anything by him, expecially Boheme and Tosca. Then go to Verdi or Mozart - Aida or Barber of Seville. Get your bearings first, then plunge into Wagner. Good luck.
Mirella Freni the best Soprano I know. Her pure voice and performance here is even better than most of so called Hollywood Actors and Actresses who only know how to get millions for poor actiong job, except the acting itself these days.
Why are you Callas fan keep bringing her trying to compare her mediocre nasal tone voice to the greats like Freni. Callas got famous because of hot love affairs with Onasis and others, not because of her voice.
I would have killed to see him preform this with maria callas. that would have been the best result of this song having the creme of the crop sing together because they both set the standard for opera.
you obviously know nothing about opera. Freni is without a doubt one the undisputed best Mimi's ever...if not the best. And she was not only Pavrotti's childhood friend from the same city, but was also his Mimi when he made his debut in this role.
I think I know more about opera than you. As a person who goes and studies at the La Scala Music school in Milan. Trust me to her maria callas version. This girl Has nothing on Maria.
Beautiful. Greetings from NYC

I have so many things to tell you. Or only one thing: the thing as deep as ocean....
You are all my love and life!

I often find Mimi a difficult character to like, but M. Freni gives a charm she doesn't otherwise have, and it makes all the difference.
I think their 1972 recording of this with Von Karajan is the first, but still best, I've ever heard it done.

I'd leave Wagner well alone. Not a single good tune in a whole career. I like leaving the theatre with the melodies in my head and heart.
After this I'd advise Don Giovanni. Rigoletto. Traviata. then Aida perhaps.
