There are still an estimated 600 million unexploded ordinance in france alone, from WWI and WWII... farmers routinely turn up 'potatos' that are actaully old grenades. THere are teams of special forces who collect the bombs every month for disposal. If there are that many taht didn't explode, you've got to wonder the actaull totla of bombs dropped!
nice but...Go near Verdun where WW1 took place, you could find live shells with Mustardgas.you dont even need a MD there scattered eveywhere.just go off the footpath into the forrests. and Bingo.
No, it wouldn't explode if you hit the front. Fuzes normally have a sliding shutter mechanism for safety, requiring the shell to rotate a certain number of times at a certain 'G' force to open the shutter allowing a pin to contact the initiator to set off the explosive....however, because this one has been lying around for years it could be very sensitive to any light dinks!!! be careful !!!!

Amazing. Some 17 or 18 year old US GI dropped those live rounds...I wonder who it was? I wonder how lonely he felt being there and being shot at? I wonder if he survived the war? Is he still alive today???? Thanks for bringing this history alive with your videos.
...boy im 13 and dream day and night to visit germany. and retrace my grandpas foot steps in which i never met. i only have pictures and stories from my parents and family to tell me who and what he did in life. he was in d day plus 6 [another thing im really into ww2.] and for my thirteenth birthday asked for a metal detector. being on the us east coast i thought of civil and revolutionary war relics. any tips? another question. how did you get a metal detector on a plane?
World war2 ammo like that especially uxo's you can find lying around in forests of Latvia all the time. Usually in one searching trip we find over 200- 300 rounds and about 10 shells in day.... but we dont give a damn about ammunition, because it is worthless...

I thought that your presentation was very good. I have always wanted to go to the Ardennes with my metal detector to look for relics of this tremendous battle. Does anyone know if any of these shells have exploded. Are there land mines their?Have people been hurt after all these years?
@DomenicoScarlatti This specific piece did not seem to be "armed" and absolutely not fired. That would normally mean that it could not really explode by "smacking" it in the front. However, I would NOT take my chances and do it just to prove my point.
Thats a nice vid.. Thats really a weird feeling when you visit a battlefield, i think you would reconise that.. One of these days i will make a new video with ww2 relics..
@tommezzzz - totally agree. Especially if you know what took place and who was involved at the time. I checked out your video. Outstanding work! Worldclass! I am standing by and looking forward to see your next video.

After watching this, I think I'd limit my detecting to medievil battlefields.
Less chance of getting blown to bits.
