Hey guys, my name is Jan, I used to train in the same karate club like sensei Mraz did, many years ago. This video was just a commercial show... but Rastislav (or Rasto, as we called him) is a real deal. Somebody posted sarcastic comments asking "can he fight?" Let me tell you: He sure can! He was one of the best fighters I've ever met back then. Very fast, so hard to block! Sensei Mraz, 6th DAN in Goju Ruy, is one of 2 Europeans holding title "Renshi", means he's actually a samurai.
@jstefano wtf are you going on about, what the hell has samurai got to do with goju ryu or any karate, and where do you get the information that renshi means hes a samurai, have you lost the plot? all these boards they are breaking has thae grain running in a way that it would break, its just as easy to break a biscuit!!!
What the heck is up with the music and lights!? Total mood killer! Respect to the Karatekas but the music made it sound like it was gonna be a Male strip show.
I'll admit, I have no experience whatsoever in studying the Goju Ryu discipline, but these guys failed in my opinion to show the efficiency and beauty of their art in their demonstration. To be honest, the audience didn't seem to be too impressed either, they actually seemed more concerned for the demonstrators of the art. I've seen a few other videos of Goju Ryu before this one and read a few brief summaries of it's history, in comparison to what I've already seen and read, this demo failed.
so much negative comments on martial arts these days...and no respect either...i want some of these guys who make terrible comments do the things martial artists do on a daily basis i bet they wouldnt last a day
btw I know both of them! ...a guy with curly hair is international instructor and members of examining board of Japan federation of karate Goju Kai and international instructor of Goju Ryu and so and so... he have 7th dan - how many people in Europe have it?
and one more - last push-ups was on one finger not on 2 ;)
hahahaha, ok this is the truth! the video is TV cheese, the guys were asked to do those particular "tricks", it is not goju sylabus. The two guys DO study Goju Ryu under the JKF and they are both excellent. Rasto has produced several European and world champions in sport karate - his own karate is excellent and very powerful. Shame on all you so called martial artists with all your beer boy my style is better dumbass comments - get out and get a life
I was thinking, "Pfft. I can do all of that." until the freakin' started doing pushups on their thumbs!! holy freak those guys must have strong hands!
as much as i totally respect this. but when was there ever a real point in breaking boards over each other. anyone could take it with the amount of training they had. or board breaking practise lol.
they should just fight in real situations like ufc and price.
power to hit and to take hits are key in any fight, breaking stuffs demonstrate how to execute techniques correctly to generate power deliver to the target. Fighting skill is different when put fight skill and techniques together and one of those hit land-> if bricks break i think you face and anything else in your body will break as well. A thought for all of you that thinks break is for shows
not sure if my reply was posted to flyballmax but, for anyone who doesn't have any training in martial arts, evidenced by his apparent inability to take a sucker punch, and the fact that he missed the fact that this demo was for SHOW, his credibility is seriously damaged for a logical point of view.
Posers...they're technique is so bad...They have their toes curled in a round-house kick....WRONG!...and their back foot isn't pointing in the opposite direction of of where they're kicking...they're fakers...I've seen, and trained with the head of Okinawan Goju-ryu and i can tell these guys are wrong
@FlyballMax oh really? who was that undefeated UFC fighter again? lyoto machida? and what was his fighting back ground? KARATE. and fyi, real okinawan masters wouldnt even notice a sucker punch the way they train and theyd come back at them in a real rampage. their techniques were used to KILL back then. so do some research
uhm no. its not about submissions and fighting on the ground. its I block you, brake your leg or maybe an arm and then take you down to the ground, unable to move and get your ribcage or were ever is a target smashed or broken.
@FlyballMax You're a moron. Lyoto Machida is the most dangerous fighter in there and what does he have? Shotokan Karate. Goju Ryu karate is more dangerous then systema, more dangerous then muay thai, and makes taekwondo look like garbage. Think before you say something that you have no knowledge about.
How to do it: get a long piece - 2" (thick) x 4" (wide) x 4 foot long wood. Make sure it is very dry. When you hold it, be sure you grasp the very end closest to you (close as possible) with the rear hand and the front hand gripping only 7 to 10 inch max above it. When you hit a body part, be sure you use the area just above (10") your front grip so that the momentum of the tip of keeps moving with centrifugal force, causing the stick to break. TRY IT! IT"S FUN AND PAINLESS!!
What a load of shit. The only impressive bit were the knuckles/2 fingers press ups and even then, an easy 10 week training could take people further than that, not 'decades'
Please don't watch this video and judge all of Karate... This is somewhat of a joke to people that actually study Karate, also this is just a show off thing, because they are on a TV show. Lyoto Machida is the light heavie weight champion of the UFC, and he's from Shotokan Karate, so... Also Andy Hug, he is passed away now, but look him up... He's from Kyokushin.
A steet fighter will be broken like a brick by any karate practinioner regardless the ryu he follows.A real karateka will endure any "street fighter" hit
@FlyballMax umm, this video was for a show, street fighters are undisciplined most of the time, letting their tempers get the better of them, overreaching, exaggerating many techniques. Although, if you can't take a sucker punch, then you probably shouldn't be fighting in the first place
@FlyballMax Wrong, because nobody has honor in a street fight even a karate practitioner. In fact, what makes the difference with us karate-ka is that we'll never get into a street fight because we're not lowlife losers.
did i miss something? all i saw here was a couple of guys trying to be macho by breaking thin bits of wood on themselves.. so what? they can take a hard slap - isnt that cute...
One question: The intro said Rast'o Mraz is the National Coach for Slovakia and holds a JFK 6th Dan grade, but on the title it read: The Power and Strength of Goju Ryu Karate. Are they JFK or Goju Ryu??? BTW, anyone can break those thin wood on anybody. No biggy!
JKF or Goju-ryu???What part of that is it confusing?OK let me explain it to you since probably you don't know.Either because you don't do Karate-do or you're involve in one of those X-treme karate M.A. clubs(whicharenotkarate)TheJKF is the largest Jpanese org.that regulates karate-do world-wide unlike the JKA which is stricktly for shotokan & wado-ryu.JKF gives recognition of rank to all karate-do practitioners, you could belong to ex:I.O.G.K.F.which would be your style organization.Yet this one.
I like how this whole video shows nothing really to do with the actual style itself, but a bunch of guys with no shirts on pretending to be tuff. No wonder so many people have so many misconceptions about karate.
Karate is my sense of life, and it is sad that one is looking only for obasok. What he has the tapes? anger me. I do not like the tape. Written for the training goes a lot of people which is also a belt as me but they are certainly not as good as me (orange belt) If a person exercises to the 200 year is not always as good
this is NOT goju kai its basically human strength. this shows nothing of the goju kai so i dont get it its not that greatit was mostly under par i'd say.
Well, it doesn't show the technique. This is just one part of Goju Ryu. I do Goju Ryu and we do a lot of conditioning (we don't quite break these boards on each other, but you get the point) like punching and kicking each other.
But yeah, this did mostly focus on the human strength part of Goju.
I believe this (the last part) is part of a Kata (form) from Goju ryu. Basically the idea is that you are supposed to be so focused on breathing and performing the kata that you are not distracted by people abusing you. My sensei wasn't THAT cruel, we just got pushed around a little...
i have only just heard of this form of Karate and find it really interesting i had already heard and or seen shotokan, kyokushin, shito ryu and wado ryu but not Goju ryu i don't suppose you would be able to tell me a little more about the martial art would you e.g. it's principles etc because it seems quite cool, i love martial arts and like learning about ones i hadn't previously heard of.
The only thing that I don't like in this video, is that the guy walks like if he was sponge Bob (like if he was 2 meters large)..he looks like a dumbass !
For any one who bothers to read these comments. Lets clear some points up.
Too many of the comments made here have been done by dumbarses or those who dont really understand.
Go (Hard) Ju (soft) Ryu (school) One of the main principles of this martial art is body conditioning before one learns the softer side, anyone who is familiar with the kata sanchin would understand. I know having spent many years practicing this art.
Never under estimate the ability of a Goju martial artist.
Just to harden the hand and teach what it feals like to follow through with a punch. It's realy more of a sport karate aplication, but it has its use in training. When we train we are developing skills the end result is improved fighting ability. That is even if its aplicability isn't derectly transperent. I rarley ever practice this myself.
The point of it is having an iron body. It's conditioning. It means your body is harder, and you can withstand more.
Of course it doesn't show that you can beat them, but in a real life fight I'd imagine being able to take more punches would be useful. Plus, it isn't all about that. We actually fight, too.
While I do not doubt their abilities what they are doing is dishonoring themselves and their style. Karate is a practice of building oneself introspectively through meditation and hard work. It is to be used only in self-defense not boasting.
Also on a side note, they aren't that strong anyways. I've seen younger people break more boards than them.
Wow! Very macho! People are so naive and easy to impress I guess....Its sad that something more informative could have been showen for such an elaborate production. This is just more senseless trickery. Martial arts needs to evolve away from this.
Are you sure that is goju? Maybe japanese goju, not okinawan goju. This looks like shotokan more or less. Rubbish. This is not goju. The two guys are american I suppose haahah, aren't they?
no mate they are from slovacia...and even they know its shit it was done for tv/people that know nothing about karate,so they were going for the wow facter on members of the public ;0)
This is just another embarassment to traditional karate. Very boring!! If they wanted to impress and stun the crowd, why not show them Sanchin with strikes. I wish people would quit abusing the name karate. Quit calling your lame Take My Dough - Karate. Quit calling your MMA mixed martial arts- because the only martial art you are using is BJJ, and mixing it with crapola!!
In karate training such things happen, but if you show it to people without explain them the pourpose, they will think karatekas are a mass of idiots enjoying to get staffs broken on their heads..
A very nice display of Karate "tricks" to impress the uneducated and gullible public. Although it only helps to perpetuate the myth that Karate is about turning yourself into a fighting robot... Go (hard) Ju (soft), how about a display of Karate's Ju side? But that wouldn't be anywhere near as "interesting"... ;o)
That's correct BarefootBandit. Goju-ryu came from Gung-fu, specifically from Crane style and it has some other stuff mixed in over the years. But as it's taught in Okinawa it's almost all still the same crane style training from Chinese Gung-fu.
Guys, its a bit of fun. Do you think REAL self defence can be demonstrated by anyone? All fighting, be it BJJ, K1, Kyokushinkai, boxing etc, are ALL governed by rules. This is for TV. Do kata on tv and see if it would be understood. How about pre arranged self defence ... lame eh? It's just fun, get over it and stop bitching. Fight Rasto on the street if you're keen to see self defence. He's also the Slovakian national coach, but then that is sport and governed by rules.
i agree with you thats sensei rasttou i have had the pleasure of fighting/training,teaching and socialising with the man great guy and great at karate
weak..i study both arts for 15 years....show show show anyone green belt and above can look half alright....put yourself in the japan open or a world kyokushin full contact fight and let the japs have a smack at youre gut in combat....later
Hello, Mr. Mraz is my coach, and we don't use any sticks during our practise sections. We do basics, kata and kumite. We don't brake anything. It was done just for Tv show to entertain the audience, .. don't you get it???? There is n o b r a k i n g of anything!!!!!
This video is just bullshit...

I combine my goju with your friend's Jeet Kune Do, and it's quite comforting.

AricDobres 3 years ago
In traditional Japanese karate students to not smack each other as hard as they can. And this is not Goju.

this is just a show.the wood break don't hurts.my trainer can break a brick without screaming...
hungariangladiator 3 years ago
what is the point of breaking woods or bricks?
it doesnt prove anything it dont even prove that you can beat your opponent unless you been attack by woods or bricks
AznNikka911 3 years ago
Just to harden the hand and teach what it feals like to follow through with a punch. It's realy more of a sport karate aplication, but it has its use in training. When we train we are developing skills the end result is improved fighting ability. That is even if its aplicability isn't derectly transperent. I rarley ever practice this myself.
TheRealParagon 3 years ago
The point of it is having an iron body. It's conditioning. It means your body is harder, and you can withstand more.
Of course it doesn't show that you can beat them, but in a real life fight I'd imagine being able to take more punches would be useful. Plus, it isn't all about that. We actually fight, too.

I didn't recognize any Goju-Ryu. No familiar stances or blocks. I suspect this is some other style.

I don't see how their demonstration has anything to do with Goju Ryu.
Jakneife 3 years ago
No kidding
willowtreephoto 3 years ago
Would have been much better if they would have shown some attributes of goju ryu that make it unique.
binxis2cute 3 years ago
While I do not doubt their abilities what they are doing is dishonoring themselves and their style. Karate is a practice of building oneself introspectively through meditation and hard work. It is to be used only in self-defense not boasting.
Also on a side note, they aren't that strong anyways. I've seen younger people break more boards than them.

Wow! Very macho! People are so naive and easy to impress I guess....Its sad that something more informative could have been showen for such an elaborate production. This is just more senseless trickery. Martial arts needs to evolve away from this.

goju has testing, and strengthening practices,
which are a small part of goju, but with that audience and presentation etc, surely there was more to the demo than that..
nice to see the rest of, the goju..
shisoshin0 4 years ago
This is just another embarassment to traditional karate. Very boring!! If they wanted to impress and stun the crowd, why not show them Sanchin with strikes. I wish people would quit abusing the name karate. Quit calling your lame Take My Dough - Karate. Quit calling your MMA mixed martial arts- because the only martial art you are using is BJJ, and mixing it with crapola!!
kaishaku71 4 years ago
BJJ? That is judo with extra-developed ground fighting, right? I like it, but its name has been abused lately either.

Goju Ryu is a supreme art .. and this video contains some part of the dan's training :) my daily routine ^^ .. nice work! Goju Ryu <3

Yeah, nice circus show...
In karate training such things happen, but if you show it to people without explain them the pourpose, they will think karatekas are a mass of idiots enjoying to get staffs broken on their heads..
Vaisravana 4 years ago
A very nice display of Karate "tricks" to impress the uneducated and gullible public. Although it only helps to perpetuate the myth that Karate is about turning yourself into a fighting robot... Go (hard) Ju (soft), how about a display of Karate's Ju side? But that wouldn't be anywhere near as "interesting"... ;o)

I hate when traditional arts try to become commercialized....
Quikheater 4 years ago 2
why?
JCMELKOR 4 years ago
Karate doesn´t reach Shaolin Kung Fu or Jeet Kune Do. All styles are good, but some just dont let the practitioner advance, just limits him.
robertvoice 4 years ago
actulay gojuryu karate came from shaolin kung fu ;) and jeet kune do is just a mix of everything
barefootbandit83 4 years ago
That's correct BarefootBandit. Goju-ryu came from Gung-fu, specifically from Crane style and it has some other stuff mixed in over the years. But as it's taught in Okinawa it's almost all still the same crane style training from Chinese Gung-fu.
richsifu 4 years ago
That has never been Goju-Ryu Karate.....
casperpetersen 4 years ago
I agree with u casperpeterson.
what their showing has nothing to do with go ju, just ki.
so shud not be called the strength and power of goju, but the strength and power of ki.
They just happen to do goju.
and I hate that people would commercialise traditional karate like this, especially to (like others have sed) people who are uneducated
baaldi 4 years ago
Guys, its a bit of fun. Do you think REAL self defence can be demonstrated by anyone? All fighting, be it BJJ, K1, Kyokushinkai, boxing etc, are ALL governed by rules. This is for TV. Do kata on tv and see if it would be understood. How about pre arranged self defence ... lame eh? It's just fun, get over it and stop bitching. Fight Rasto on the street if you're keen to see self defence. He's also the Slovakian national coach, but then that is sport and governed by rules.
