However, I still would choose, if pressed, this version as the superior of the two. What does that prove? Absolutely jack squat! As much as we may try to justify and codify it, musical preference is completely a matter of OPINION. I laud Tod A. for writing this masterpiece and Devin Townsend for providing such a fantastic homage, and bringing this band to my attention. (For the record, though, I have to say that the Beatles are awesome and that Joe Cocker does absolutely nothing for me.)

Okay, here's the straight dope without the pious bullcrap. I think the vast majority of us can agree that this song is awesome in both its iterations. For my part, I heard the SYL version years earlier and if it weren't for that, I wouldn't even know who Cop Shoot Cop was...

I love the SYL version of this, it has long been one of my favorite songs of theirs. This is my first time listening to the original and there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two. I'd say this version is a little... dirtier? grittier? A little less clean. Both are great versions but I have to give these guys credit for writing such a killer song.

I came to watch this after I finally got off my ass to find out who he covered (his version just doesn't sound like one of his own songs).

The original is good, the two sound almost identical, apart from the vocals. which I prefer on the SYL. it has noting to do with which i heard first. I heard the track "With a little help from my friends" done by the Beatles first, then I heard the cover by Joe Cocker and that just blew the original out the water. But that is my own opinion.

I think we've just tripped over a generation-gap: There is no way SYL can even hold a CANDLE to this version! This is THE version. I'm actually quite fond of SYL. It's just that NOBODY effing beats Cop Shoot Cop, nobody, nohow, end of story. And nothing beats this goddamn song for the rollicking queasy whiskey-soaked-gravel thumping menace.

And, as soon as Tod and I get to the same circle of Hell so we can live together, he is going to have my babies, lots & lots of little genius babies. Amen.

@fuktardo That's rare, cool. I love the SYL version too, but for a song this sexy-eerie, the double-bass and synth is more appealing personally than the minor chords and gruffer vocals. But then, I heard the original first. As with a lot of music, the formative impression is usually strongest, so I don't begrudge SYL fans for liking the cover better. They heard it first. It's the adamant refusal to acknowledge the existence of the concept that the orignal is better, that just blows my mind.

I heard SYL's version first and thought it was really gothic sounding and cool. I heard this one after and didn't like it as much first time around, but then i kept coming back and realised it is so much better. thematically it's so much darker and sinister.

Here's what I say - whether or not SYL did a better version, SYL is a better band. I personally think that this song fits better with the chaotic nature of SYL, and because of that, I like the cover better. SYL are some of the greatest writers ever, but regardless, this is a great song, played by either band.

I love both versions about equally, they both have a different characteristic, this version is more industrial and bleak sounding which I love and the Strapping version is just monstrous sounding and the voclas have a quality to them that I can't explain but I really dig
