I just want to object in the strongest possible terms to phileustace's racist comment below. A person of any colour can be Irish it is for those republican beliefs of liberty equality and fraternity that Irish men and women have given their lives over the centuries.
i'm sorry but the lead singer seems a trifle nervy to me if it had been performed later i think it could have won but opening a contest in london is a big pressure, the vinyl or record version is stronger
Why this song came in 3rd (and was close to beating France in a part of the voting, while we're at it) is beyond me. It's just a typical ballad with no spunk; very overrated. But let's face it, every year there is at least one very overrated entry.
I actually like this song, but I agree with you, there is always at least one very overrated entry, and it's very annoying- the best examples in my opinion are Lordi and this year's winner from Serbia (they both SUCKED!!!!!!!!). There's also always at least one very underrated entry- perhaps the best example of that is Portugal in 1997- it should have been in the Top 5, never mind got nil points.
If you'd been alive in 1977 & had a sense of music then you'd understand why it finished so well. It was music of its time, Ireland at its best - not just the usual ballad sort. As Scotland constantly points out history cannot be changed. I still love this song 32 yrs later.
Yep, allow me to add that I quite understand where you're coming from. This is a very charming, laid-back and fun ballad and I enjoy every time I hear it. I've warmed up to it now and it was definitely one of 1977's strongest. And yes, I may not have been born at the time, but this still sounds very much of its time as you say (it was certainly much, much better than your effort in the Hague the year before).
I think if you look back at ESC 09 30 years from now with the hindsight of all that happens in between you'll have 2 different senses of 09. I look at old ESC differently now having seen all the changes that have gone on since. But I still remember how up to date the 77 contest was in 1977 & that's an experiential thing. I was making the point to try answer your question as to why the results were as they were.
& for the record in our poll of 77 I only put Ireland 6th after Neth Finland France Greece & Norway, which along with Irl Italy & Portugal were the great songs in what Tasos constantly points out was a really great & strong year.
One Question & maybe someone has the answer. Who was the act that did that song I can't remember who it was for the life of me to be honest with you & after 30 years it's still sounds freash as the first day of spring.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree- of their four winners in the '90s, only Linda Martin deserved to win. Niamh Kananagh in 1993 was rubbish- Sonja should have won for the United Kingdom. Paul and Charlie in 1994 were boring. Eimear Quinn was O.K. in 1996, but U.K. were BRILLIANT! (I'm from the U.K., by the way!).
I dont agree with Verkaforever - only the song from Eimear Quinn deserved to win in the 90`s for Ireland - this is such a beautiful Song and so much better that the one from Linda Martin! But everyone has his own taste!
I have to disagree with you. I think that both Niamh Kavanagh and Linda Martin were by far the best songs in the Eurovision in 92 and 93. Each of they performed AMAZINGLY on the night and quality songs won on the night
My feeling on this song is as follows, Abba were massive, Brotherhood of Man were doing well so they wanted a 2 boy 2 girl act to see if they could do the same, i thought the name was disrespectful to the girls they were both well established on the music scene at the time, the song was second until the last jury voted and then finished a couple of points behind uk, the best song that year won.
Whereas I find this a rather typically old-fashioned song (but then this was the 70s). I wouldn't have rated it as high as 3rd place - I mean, this got more points than Greece and Finland, for instance? (Whereas I LOVE your entry from that year and think it's one of the UK's best.)
Shame on you! Tell him that the UK didnt get 12 pts from Ireland because their song was dreadful. There is nothing in the rules that says a country has to reciprocate the votes of another. Tell him also that I can point to many occasions where Ireland gave the UK a good vote with little or nothing in return. He should get off his high horse. This was 1 of the best songs of 77. Vivre L'Irlande!
Well, shame on you in return for calling Rock Bottom dreadful. I would like to add that it's been quite some time since I made that comment, as you can see. I like "It's nice to be in love again" very much now, but I still say that 3rd place was enough.
Well Slap me down with a wet rag!! I'm sorry for damming a song you like, without souding patronising, please continue to enjoy it, but I shall persevere & say IMO it was the worst UK in the first 20 years, I'll never like. Sorry if that sounds harsh.
I cannot believe that this song did not win the Eurovision song contest in 1977. It is probably one of the best songs to ever feature in the contest. The performance of this song is simply first rate. The entry which did win (France I believe) was not a good song. This song has perfect melody, lyrics and performance. Such a pity it didn't get the accolade it truly deserved. Thank you IJM123 for uploading this amazing song
This is one of my all-time favourite Eurovision songs. However, I prefer the 7-inch studio recording of the tune as opposed to this 'live on the night' version.
I really liked it!...
I think the same: It's nice to be in love again!

This is what today's Eurovision is missing, nice melody, meaningful lyrics, unlike the crap of the past few years. Thanks for uploading this.

The past few years have NOT been crap. And meaningful lyrics are not essential- a few nonsense words never hurt anyone!

My favourite from ESC 1977. This should have been Ireland's second ESC winner. They should not have won 4 times in the 1990s.

A class act from Ireland here, better than many of their winners, but it was performed first on the night, which put it at a disadvantage.
