Dredge is a mechanic allowing you to return a card (with dredge) from your graveyard to your hand by milling yourself for the Dredge number and foregoing a draw i.e. instead of drawing a card for your turn you mill six and return Golgari Grave-Troll from your graveyard to your hand. This example assumes of course that Golgari Grave-Troll was in your graveyard before your draw step. The deck uses cards like Careful Study and Breakthrough to allow itself to "Dredge" large quantities of cards.
The deck wins by generating tokens off of multiple copies of Bridge From Below in the graveyard and casting Dread Return for its flashback cost and reanimating a Flame-Kin Zealot to give all of your tokens haste and swing for 30 or so on turn two. I'm not a Dredge player, it's more technical than this and there are probably more tricks with it, but this is a solid basic break down.
i miss the old days. when we were kids, played without card sleeves and let our creatures clash.
that kind of decks mess up the dynamics of the game. it's not about PLAYING anymore, it's all just about getting your combo to work (or prevent your opponent from doing so). it's no fun to play and it's no fun to play against.
Besides, where's the point in a second turn win if you didn't even come up with the idea yourself? You don't have to be good, you just have to download a dredge decklist...
Dredge changed the game of Magic. Half of everyones sideboard is filled with stuff to deal with dredge. Even a dredge deck is running 4 leyline of the void to deal with the mirror. I wonder if Wizards went back to when dredge was created, if they would still create it.
I digress, I think Magic (at least in person and especially at the higher levels) gives people a chance to interact, socialize and mature who otherwise wouldn't have much of an opportunity to do so. I.E. if he hears his opponents say "Doran" enought times maybe it will sink in that he's not pronouncing it quite right.
dredge confused me, I understand what it does, I just now sure how these decks kick ass. THen again havn't really looking into it besides just now, haha

can someone explain why dredge would run their own leylines?
rabblerouser 4 years ago
Two main reasons:
1) For the mirror match. You have it, they don't = you win.
2) For decks that run things that sacrifice, such as Mogg Fanatic and/or Cabal Therapy flashback.
mrorangeguy 4 years ago
ah, didn't know it only affected the opponent. whoopsies

lol obv

The leyline only affects your opponents graveyard. And useful when ran up against mirror matches.
Also it murders threshold decks when they come out fast.

Although I wish he has successful and fun life, this guys voice is hilarious. Of course I'm laughing here at home, but I wouldn't to his face.
