Way too many of these comments had nothing to say, but, "She's toasted." OK. So what" Would she be the only one who has ever been blasted at a performance? I think not. Did she nail it? In fact, she did, In fact, it's the only time I have listened to this (the national anthem) without hitting the mute button or changing the channel. My military service forever changed my opinion of patriotism.
Everyone. I love Whitney Houston;s voice! I watch her everysingle day constintly loving Whitney! I would never say anything to bash her. She does seem a little high in this performance. I think it's pretty noticable. She sounded okay for the most part. she didn't act completley right though! Well, this was a long time ago. She's now better than ever!
Not sure what video you haters are watching..in this she sprays throat spray in her mouth and she wipes around her mouth nose and she touches up her hair and ask her assistant if she looked okay...as for the song..THIS WAS LIVE..the other performance was adjusted...I like this one just as much as the 1991, at least the children know abut unconditional love..only when you age you start to rot ..thats if you allow yourself to..freshen up grown ups!
That woman got powerful voice, powerful dramatico coloratura soprano! Wow this better than Christina's any day and she honestly was probably high here.
@tini694 Have you seen any live Whitney performances of recent? All the drugs have destroyed her! She has no vocal stamina, the power is quasi-gone. She can't even sing an entire song without being winded. It will take her years, if ever, for her to get back to what she was. Whitney back in the day was awesome, but nowadays, I beg to differ. It is a fact that Mariah could squash her right as I am typing this. Some people like listening to straight up power and belting... I like vocal variety.
@aussiechic06 I saw Whitney last year live in Hamburg. She was the BOMB!!!!Sorry...for me Whitney is the Queen of Voices,no matter what other people say.
@aussiechic06 Mariah can't sing. I don't know where this idea of her being a top vocalist has come about, as every time i here her she sounds sh!t.
Whitney is actually starting to get back on track, i think Whitney will always be the greatest vocalist on earth, since no one will ever touch what she did, especially those 80's vocals!
this was AWFUL and a crying shame for Whitney who has the best voice I've ever heard...I'll keep listening to her 1991 superbowl performance which is the BEST EVER!
Oh yeah! A true Nippy fan'll know when their girl is high or not. And I can certainly tell, she was indeed here! Over-all, this version was way better compared to anyone!
@daronpk YEA, I could always tell when 'my girl' was high. LOL! She definitely was here. Hell, she was 99% of the 'MLIYL' Tour... Hopefully those days are LONG behind her now.
THIS IS STILL GREAT BUT SHE SANG IT BETTER IN CONCERT FOR THE TROOPS OF THE GULF WAR. SHE STILL IS THE BEST AND NO ONE CAN BE COMPARED TO HER. I HATE WHEN PEOPLE TRY AND COMPARE THEIR FAVORITE SINGER TO WHITNEY BECUASE IT PUTS TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON YOU FAVORITE SINGER TO LIVE UP TO WHITNEY HOUSTON POWER.
her runs are sick, her voice was so crisp, she is so talented, even though she rushed the song but nobody still cant compare to her talent, even on her worst day
@yippeee4 yes i agree this was nice, but nowhere near her first rendition. her voice was barely warmed up, her head voice was inexistent. She would have done it better if she had to sing it during the my love is your love tour
jesus she was high! woah! but she did great! she sounded very strong, her notes notes not as sharp. but she clearly did a great job. once again, high as a damn kite. but the greatest singer ever.
@Chimier - warbling? It's called vibrato, you moron! If you knew a single thing about music, you would know that. This song is an EXTREMELY difficult song to sing. There is a reason why Whitney Houston's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner during the 1999 Super Bowl was identified by the President of the United States as the Official version for the country. Take a music lesson or two before you attend to judge music!
@JazzPuris t#1- Whitney's vibrato was a warble. It wasn't even, it wasn't steady at all. An authentic vibrato would be what she did in the 1991 version.
#2- Whitney didn't perform the national anthem at the 1999 Super Bowl. She performed in 1991. NONE of her renditions have been identified as official.
#3- I obviously know more than you if you can't differentiate between vibrato and a warble.
@Chimier #2 Bill Clinton specifically said Whitney's rendition was the official f***ing rendition of the national anthem. Look it the f*** up, since you think you're so clever. Don't need wikipedia. Graduate of USC School of Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. My son is under contract with Warner Brothers Records. Warble is a succession of low, pleasing tones. She didn't warble, moron! Take another class or two, then BITE ME!!!!
@JazzPurist Yet you don't even know what a tremolo is, hence why you gave me the Wikipedia definition. Bitch, bite me. Maybe by taking a chunk of my brain could take you to the level of intelligence you obviously don't have. NEXT!
@JazzPurist A warble is not necessarily low. You can warble at high pitches. Coloratura sopranos do it ALL the time. A trill, a run or other sorts of vocal embellishments can be described as WARBLING. Get a clue and use it. It'll do you good. I guess the joke's on you! #LOL
@JazzPurist And you obviously do need Wikipedia, since you gave me their definition of tremolo. What did you say a tremolo was? An unpleasantly wide or slow vibrato. Go and check Wikipedia, it says the exact same thing. Wait! You already did! Silly me. Your statement is dumped.
@Chimier I suggest you read the damn book. Vocal tremolo is an unpleasantly wide or slow vibrato. That did NOT happen here. You go out of your way to be an idiot, don't you? Check.... mate!
@Chimier So I suggest YOU read the damn book and not Wikipedia.
I don't need to go out my way to be an idiot, I'm the one who knows what he's talking about. The only thing that got checked was that intelligence of yours which is CLEARLY not up to par!
@JazzPurist That was at the beginning, fool, when I was correcting you. And yes, a slow vibrato is called a wobble. As I said, go and read some books on vocal pedagogy.
And you said at the beginning that a TREMOLO was a wide vibrato. Bitch, you #FAIL
@JazzPurist Read "The Structure of Singing: System and Art in Vocal Technique", "Dynamics of the Singing Voice" and "Bel Canto: A History in Vocal Pedagogy". All three books identify a slow, wide vibrato as a WOBBLE. For someone who did jazz studies, you're awfully STUPID! Now THAT'S funny!
P.S. Wikipedia says nothing about a wobble. I checked just to make sure, the same way I checked when you gave me your definition of tremolo.
@JazzPurist Oh, FYI, the WIDER the vibrato is, the SLOWER it is. Vibrato is caused by the variations of breath pressure from the lungs, by automatic adjustments of the vocal cords to hold a true tone. Both a wobble and a tremolo are caused by lack of breath support. In the case of a wobble, resistance of the breath pressure creates a wide, slow vibrato. In the case of a tremolo, it's caused by a lack of eveness in breath support and lack of proper adduction of the cords. Your comment is dumped.
@JazzPurist It's funny how you're now saying a wobble is a wide vibrato. Didn't you say before that a tremolo was an unpleasantly WIDE and slow vibrato? Oh yes, you did! Wow you can't even keep track of your thoughts. Maybe it's because they don't stem from your brain.
@Chimier Yes you did say something about a wobble (4 messages up), developing dementia already? You said, and I quote "a slow vibrato is called a wobble." No, it's not. @JazzPurist But you said that a vocal tremolo was a WIDE vibrato. Why are you now saying that a wobble is? Can't keep track of your thoughts? Maybe, but I think, no, I KNOW it's 'cos you were WRONG!
As I said in the beginning, a slow vibrato is called a wobble and a fast vibrato is called a tremolo.
A wobble is when the pitch excursion is too...(wait for it)...WIDE and when the pitch oscillation is too slow. A tremolo is when the pitch excursion is too NARROW and the oscillation is too fast.
