I was in the audience at Redlands University the night that the album was introduced at Stan Kenton's almamater, in 1976. I still get goose bumps. I still have the signed album!!!
Definitely Jay Sollenberger on lead and solo. To the right of him is Chuck Schmidt, who later would be lead trumpet with Buddy Rich's band. Jay is now in Kansas City and I believe Chuck is still in the Dallas area. Great players!
@TLOZMT: his name is Dave Barduhn and he teaches at Mt. Hood Community College in Washington. He is a great musician and educator. I hope that you did study with him.
simply amazing. the first time i had heard this song i got chills and cried. absolutely one of the greatest versions of this song, and probably Kenton's best work.
I saw Stan Kenton in Ohio near Cincinnati in the late 50's aand later in Illinois in the 70's.. Maynard Ferguson was a trumpet player for him. Not sure if he was on this album. Had his own band by then.

I'm an idiot, idk. Talked to my grandpa about it and he said he couldn't remember who it was. H played for stan in 1974 as a lead trumpet. He was a dentest and still was until just recently.
I saw this Kenton band in 1976 or '77, and awesome doesn't begin to describe them. "Kenton '76" was one on the first albums I ever purchased, and it is still my all time favorite.

I became addicted to Kenton in 1944 when hearing him on the Armed Forces Radio Network while stationed in England and have been a fan ever since. Saw him live in Lincoln, NE in 1947. What a treat.
I was lucky enough to hear Jon Harner do this with the band right after they put it in the book. I was about 20 feet from Harner's bell and thought I was having a religious experience! I caught the Kenton band many times and brought them in to the school where I was teaching for a concert, but that first time hearing this piece was one of the things I'll always remember.
I played trombone in jazz band in highschool, we went to jazz festival, and Stand Kenton & His band did a concert, also a jazz workshop. 1976~ They blew me away, but when they did this song in perticular, I've never been so moved by anything since. I've seen great concerts as I love all genres of music, but this stands alone. The sheer power and emotion in the song words cannot describe. AND the trumpet player was awesome on the solo at the end, yes there's only one Maynard, but he was great.
Brilliant stuff :-) All you high school guys take note that the Trumpet player doin the screamers is Mr Dennis Nody who I worked with in Florida ... he is the bomb :-)
its brilliant stuff ....all you high school guys wish you could play the lead trumpet like mr Dennis Noday who btw i played w/ his big band in Florida .... if you think im jokin check me at myspace/mikeysax
i find it hard to believe that any high school band could have a screamer like that even if there was there would have been some noise about him at an ange where students are still learning what their instrument really does i doubt he could pull it off maybe down an octave MAYBE
@darkmikolai@ptlover2000 I am 28 now, but when I was in HS, I was able to a nail double high G and A on command. I didn't play this chart until college, but I am sure I would have had no problem nailing the G on this chart!
I swear to you he nailed it. I have no idea how cause I can get no where close to that range. That's just his thing man, he nails the high notes with ease, not so hot on everything else (counting, expression, and such) but range is his thing.
Wait, did you have a trumpet that could do it at the proper octave? Nobody in our band can even come close. Although, none of us have the right kind of mouthpeice, so who knows....
Not taking away a thing from Mr. Sollenberger because he was a monster player with the Kenton band, but I still love John Harners' full, fat tone on the trumpet solo on the Kenton 76 album. What a great band. Blessed to have heard Kenton live twice before he died. Thanks so much for posting this.
Yeah! The first big band I ever saw...in 1972. I play trombone today because of Dickus. RIP Sir.......And Jay was my trumpet section leader when I played on Hank Levy's band at the Kenton Clinic in 1976 at Sac State.
This version of "Send in the Clowns" is on the "Street of Dreams" album. On the recording you really hear the full sound. Just an unbelieveable piece.
I had to play this one twice! Wonderful! Just like everything he did -- perfect. So much so that I could just hear the NY Philharmonic playing this; it is every bit as classic as anything done by the 'old' masters!
Thank you for posting this. The trumpet solo - album version - is one of my favorite. This live version is not quite as elegant/detailed but still love the way Kenton arranged this.

Best version of Send in the Clowns Ever.
Jay is good, but the street of dreams version is a prototype of greatness!

John Harner played the solo on the "Kenton 76" recording. This is Jay Sollenberger playing it here.
