Thanks so much for posting. Saw them play in Glasgow a couple of months ago. I swear it's the best live gig I've ever been to. Guy Garvey is so charismatic...and he has the audience in the palm of his hand right from the first note.
Lucky enough to sing on the upcoming Elbow album, and have performed this track live with them. Great, great musicians and lovely guys, and this song is just beautiful. Build a Rocket Boys!
I'd say, one of the best bands in the world right now. Guy's definitely got the best voice of any front man out there. They just have this knack of producing songs that make you cry. One of their best songs as well, although Mirrorball is my favourite.
@uiop60 More like out of country mate! How about the National Indoor Arena Birmingham (UK not Alabama) on 22nd March 2011. Saw today that they are playing there.
@Cloonfour I'm relatively certain they'll be touring the US after the March UK tour... if not for a great deal of money then for the satisfaction of the few good fans they've got here.
I realize that this is a gorgeous song, but the most beautiful Elbow track? I think that honor goes to A Friend of Ours due to the personal nature of the song. This is still a heartbreakingly beautiful song though.
I only discovered Elbow through the acclaim Seldon Seen Kid got for them, but i've bought their other albums now and this is just truly beautiful. I agree with the comment said earlier. How can a song like this not have gained them status? Truly beautiful song in my opinion.
i know how to play it but i'm not that big on how to write it down cos its a plucking pattern and I'm not musically trained. I can write it as a tab for you.
Does listening to this make anyone else feel like half of their self is going completely numb, whilst the other half is screaming? Or is the fact that I feel my heart just broke severely affecting my brain?
I rate the singer so much. He's so good live. I sang this for my mate's music tech recording and it was so difficult to do it well. Props to Guy Garvey
dog shit? i'm sorry ... what exactly are you into ...?you illiterate pleb? I doubt you would know love from the casual tussle you poke every saturday night .Go away and gain another STD ...listen to Your cod shit music and produce more little asbo's for our justice system to jail...
why a song like this can't propel a band to god status I'll never know . An awesome vocal, measured, beautiful, heartfelt, wells up emotion. Leaders of the free world is an awesome album
Mr Garvey agrees with you ,he said at the Q the music gig in Covent garden 'this is the best song we've ever written' before playing the best performance i've ever seen.
I realise this song isn't actually about marriage but I felt it was written about two people having some kind of realisation of how in love they were at that random moment. However my boyfriend called me 'naive' by claiming that the song is about falling for a random girl on a single bus journey. He's probably right but it's such a beautiful song, I want to believe its about something far deeper - real love!! Anybody else have any ideas so I don't feel so crushed?!
It's clearly about a marriage of love, versus a religous marriage. Marriage is a lifelong commitment "I love you I always will". It's relating to a current relationship "Call on you I'll call on you
That's exactly what I thought - and I used those lines to try and disprove the boyfriends theory. Thanks for your confirmation, don't feel so 'naive' anymore.
man alive!i cant stop listening to this song,i think its about time these guys got the credit they deserve.there is not many bands who can just keep writing songs like this and newborn and mirrorball etc etc.....
Lovely tune. I have to work on Saturday or I would be at Webster Hall (NYC) too. I believe the bass in this video is an Epiphone Jack Cassidy model, Gavin from Camera Obscura has one too.
Thought the gig last night was bloody brilliant - his voice is so great live (just as good as on the CDs). Highlights for me were Newborn and One Day Like This. Great Expectations was good too, but spoiled for me by some arsehole having a natter with his mate right beside me - you know the kind of idiot: stands with his back to the stage and talks in a loud voice during the quiet numbers. Just stay in the pub pal, do us all a favour. BUT... apart from that, really excellent gig.
i think it might be an EPIPHONE... in another elbow vid, he was playing it and it had the Epiphone "E" on the scratchplate, but i cant see it here??!!
Thank you for posting this! It's gorgeous. I'm praying they grace the States wth their presence on the tour this time. If I could marry a band, I'd marry Elbow...
Almost cannot listen to this song given how perfectly it conveys love. It does me. Every single time.
