  • bravo ksadelfoula, eimaste perifanoi gia sena!

  • these instruments are just cretan lyras that stelios petrakis (the lyra player at the left side who also makes lyras)added some strings under the main strings just to sound together when u play the main stings

original cretan lyras have three strings only

  • But you know i dont think its such a bad thing i think if any thing it adds to the richness of cretan music

  • I didnt use the words bad or good my friend, its up to the people who listens to music to tell whats good or not

  • what instrument is this ?

ive been trying to look it up - looks like the classical kemence - but sounds different . Maybe it's a classical kemence + sympathetic strings ?

    Anyone know for sure ?

  • It's the Cretan lyra (pronounced lee-ra). I`m no expert but basically it's a four stringed instrument played with a bow. I think it's also common in other areas of the Balkans.

  • cretan lyra...played all over balcans and turkey (Known as kemenche)....greeks have to types of lyras. 1 from crete shown here in the vid and one from asia (asian minor was usually greek until turks conquered it) known as pontian lyra or kemenche

  • um ok first of all there is a thracian lyra and a macedonian lyra. then you have the lyra of kostantinople known as politiki lyra wich the turks today use in there "clasical music" the lyra of pontos is only in pontos it is not the asia minor lyra granted pontos is part of asia minore but you will only fined in pontos the bulgarians have a gadulka and there other things kemani.

  • I saw this live in Cipri, it was great! When your eccually in the room were this is played its 50 times more beautifull, but it still is ofc ;)

  • Prin polla xronia etixe na anagnoriso ton Ross s'ena cinema ston Peiraia kai tou milisa. Mou fanike poli filikos kai panipsilos!

  • Geia sou Stelio!!!

  • To all there..Ross's new cd White Dragon will be released by Seistron soon..

  • this is fantastic, it is so heartening to see musics like this. Is this a new style? I know the instruments are, but even old type lyras weren't usually played together like this were they?

  • Ross versucht Elemente aus Kreta, der arabischen/persischen und indischen Welt zu vereinigen. Du musst mal die Doppel-Cd "Selected Works" hören!

  • Crete owns a lot to this Irish folk that he actually is more Krhtikos than some pseyto krhtikous... without him and Psarantoni we will still be in the lagouto-lyra era...

  • akouo kai psarandoni kai ross kai petraki kai tin kelly, alla akouo kai moundaki kai skordalo kai koutsoureli kai rodino kai mbaxevani kai nauti kai mavro kai allous polous kallitexnes pou exoun patisi stin kriti.

  • ta synxaritiria mou ross stelio kelly

  • what the hell is rong with you laouto lyra era what the hell is rong with that "era" and psarantonis brother of nikos xylouris plays the LAOUTO LYRA "ERA"

  • i love Ross and his music!

  • Just a newbie question, what kind of lyra are they playing? Are the three the same type? Curiosity, i have heard about a lot of kind of lyra (Estambul, back sea lyra,cretan..) but i can't recognize :)

  • Hello! The lyras we are playing are Cretan lyras with sympathetic strings. They are played just as a normal Cretan lyra (by the nails on the three playing strings) and the sympathetic strings are not played, but they resonate with the basic ones.

  • These lyras are an innovation of Ross Daly and they were first made 15 years ago. Now they are prety popular in Greece and there are many people in other countries that play them as well. Stelios Petrakis (one of the musicians playing in this video) is the maker of these three.

  • Hello Verotchka, that would depend largely on Paul himself and the others there. I'll investigate the idea

  • Ross, any plans of playing with Paul Grant and friends again in Geneva soon?

  • epitelous re paidia mpravo! epsaxna poli kario videos toy ross

  • Is this one of Ross's compositions??

  • Yes, the first one (the slow one) is the end of a lament he wrote many years ago, the middle one is a 4/4 piece with no name, which is not included in any of his cds and the last one the 7/8 one is a mantilatos and it's included together with the lament in Kin Kin, a record he did in Australia.

  • Well done Ross and his friends!!!
