  • Had to remove about 20 tracks from my playlist yesterday because of copyright whatever.

Seems a bit like bully boy tactics.Doesn't enhance the artist's standing.Distasteful.

  • They removed it, what the fuck >:(

  • Was it not Yes who sang this? Who done the original?

    Thanxx

  • Nice song, Stupid Paul Simon. I've used this song in a domestic video about a travel and he has asked for the music rights....asshole

  • I know, ive been really getting into a paul simon song posted on youtube called Papa Hobo. its amazing. I wanted to listern to it just now and its been removed because of copywrite or something. Jeez, how can such a great artist be so obsesed with money. He must have heaps, more than i can hope for. whats the problem with people like us enjoying his music for what it is. isnt recognition enough, now.

  • Yes, It's exactly what I mean, they'r looking for money even in old hits like these (maybe they dont have new ones),and I'm not sure if this way of acting is the best for getting money...All we have their disc (at least some) and if the would do some new, with the bad impression I have now I won't buy it.

  • i love this song

  • and p.s. this is a great song. my dad used to sing it to me when i was little. check out the explanation by the person who posted it.

  • stop rambling grandpa

  • I secound ISBAILEYDEADYET... I can only hope I achieve this kind of companionship in my lifetime.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made!

  • ...Someone who's lost maybe? Anyway, she was sleeping at the time, so gutsy? No. Stupid? Yes! lol. ;-)

    I know what you're saying though :-)

  • ...what?

  • well thanks wannadoedoe for being so kind and nice to many of the GOOD americans out there.

as to the "...what?" a translation of his/her less than perfect and mean english:

wannadoedoe is going on about how americans shouldnt complain abt politics, were all lazy prejudiced whites, etc etc. thanks a bunch.

please guys, dont use youtube to post really hateful and uncalled for messages. honestly. you think america has a bad reputation, youre hardly building up a good one for YOUR country.

  • Oh god, everytime I hear this I ALMOST cry. Every time! O_O

I personally like this song the best.

  • i agree. have you heard Josh Groban's version. i like that one too.

  • Why are you talkling politics?? This is a great song, dont ruin everything with politics.

Just enjoy Simon and Garfunkel at their best!

  • This song paints wonderful vistas

  • it's a great night to revisit 'america'..

but you know - the frightening thing is...

despite the obama victory - california still rejects love (gay marriage) and, as far as i know, obama supports the fascists in this...

so - he's NOT a civil rights champion...he's a bigot...and you SHOULD have supported hilary if wanted liberty for everyone - not just poor blacks...

  • actualy you should have voted for the socialist party

  • Little upset much? A minority.. to vote someone in when a majority is needed. Glad to see that someone pays attention. And you've failed to notice that he left his church.(Giving you the fact that just because someone leaves a church that doesn't mean their ideas have changed). I just think your an angry Clinton supporter.. or a faux McCain supporter who can't stand to see an election actually determined by the hopes of a nation instead of its fears.

  • I voted Obama, but yeah it is a shame about California.

  • Was this originally Simon & Garfunkel or Supertramp?

  • Simon and Garfunkel, 1968. The album Bookends.

  • Hands down one of the best songs ever written.

  • THE BEST S AND G EVER.

  • hay hay hay. ;D

sometimes I think im bisexual!! rawr.... mmm girls.. W3

  • I actually got to board a Greyhound in Pittsburgh once! All I could think of was this song, and I was going to DC to cheat on my first husband.

  • worth braggin' about,good one....

  • y r u bragging about that u fuckin used up herpied vag

  • Is the video ironic

  • piss off whitch you all,

this is pure brilliance, American brilliance

  • walked off too loook for americka, how many times we did this de ve VERSAS OR FOR REAL

  • The song is OK but what really makes this video are the visuals.

  • "the fabled America for which they are searching is an illusion, and all the travelers (and by extension all Americans) are seeking this mythical land in vain."

just b/c we haven't found it yet doesn't mean its not there : )

  • well im noticing a trend of political arguments...well im a hardcore conservative but i wish i was a hippie! the music and the lifestyle was amazing- forget the politics.the music that came from the flower power movement is pure magic.

  • well im noticing a trend of political arguments...well im a hardcore conservative but i wish i was a hippie! the music and the lifestyle was amazing- forget the politics.the music that came from the flower power movement is pure magic.

  • Kathy I'm lost!

  • Wow this is an oldie, My dad used to Love them when I was a kiddo, and I guess I still do too :)

  • This is how the world should be. Peaceful! Music like this is timeless, its a shame you dont hear it anymore.

  • Hi dsharff,

And when did you read trosky last :) :) :)...um probably never.Your post does suggest that the country is a state because of left wingers.Interesting thoughts considering the USA is a monumental areshole of a country and its all run by capitalists...not a lefty in site...so how do you arrive at your conclusions...perhaps another brain cell will keep the one you have happy :)

  • fuck politics

  • I agree.

  • NICE VID!

  • Hi CK,

That's right birdrain UK and US invaded Iraq to free them of an evil dictator.Yeah! OK! you believe that if you want to remain in fantasy land and delusional.

You dont have to be lunatic left anymore to see the excesses of the big corporations in running the globe.

Official US(governemnt figs) put the number of dead in Iraq at 500,000.

Petrol companies work on 14% profits and in 2006-07 corporate tax evasion by oil compnies was over 120 billion,I should know I work for the fuckers.

  • Hi Trotter...or is it Trotsky? It's a shame there's not a minimum requirement of at least a double digit IQ to post! Folks like you are why this country is headed in the direction it is. Not only are you too ignorant to understand the world, you're too ignorant to understand this is a music forum. To quote someone you might understand: "You can't fix stupid!"

  • Obviously the irony is wasted on you(but then you are an american).Using a classic traditional folk ballad to highlight the US murdering spree in Iraq is a good idea.

If you can't accept that your nation(and my nation)murdered hundreds of thousands of people just se we can steal their oil then you need to do some serious re-thinking.

  • keep visiting the leftie lunatic websites to come up with your "figure" of 100's of thousands dead in iraq.

if we stole their oil why is it 4 bucks a gallon?

and dont reply the oil companies are hoarding their profits

oil companies profits are 8 percent

apple profits are 20 plus percent

microsoft is in the 20's also

    etc.

  • The voice combination in this song is fantastic.

  • I always have a feeling of wellbeing when I listen to these guys sing, amazing, thank you

  • real great music...achingly comforting times...I weep.

  • you're SO right man!

this music is just what we in england and you in america need now - as we're being threatened by chinese communists and russian fascists again...

we need a good old fashioned dose of LIBERAL optimism - with a little sense of realism.

bookends is a great album to re-start the process.

  • I don't mean to start a fight, like most people here, but China hasn't supported their Communist party since the death of Mao Zedong, and the Soviet Union fell in 1991.

but regardless... simon and garfunkel do boost my morale.

  • i watched the election from middle class england - my emotions were very mixed.

of course, it's great see a black man and an intellectual in the white house.

but his victory is tainted by the fact that his uneducated black 'christian' supporters voted against love in california and florida...

it is a heartbreaking fact - america is as divided as ever and always will be.

if i was a white american (and my maternal grandmother was) instead of a white middle class englishman...not happy.

  • you're wrong to assume that black people who voted against gay marriage are necessarily uneducated. it's a difference of culture, and yes it's ugly and unfair, but many educated people share she same unfortunate belief as well.

  • thanks for the swift reply, olivia...

unfortunately - if you're correct - this mandate makes it even harder for white americans to ever achieve the liberty THEY voted for!

and they are the ones who will pay for it...(not to mention the rest of the world...this obama victory is a BIG mistake - from a white intellectually liberal viewpoint)

  • shut the fuck up. everyone. this is not the fuckin' place for a political debate. i'm sorry for being so coarse, but c'mon.

  • You're mistaking racist ramblings for political debate. Mark such comments as spam and move on. Don't feed the trolls.

  • i think your a racist and an idiot, and to accuse all of his black Christian supporters for the reason the ban was passed is hilarious. I'm not sure if he had many Christian supporters b/c of his view on abortion. And that only Obama voters voted against it,,, . and the fact that you have a poor disposition on American diversity, that we will never be united, and gloat like your ideals and country are so perfect,

  • America still Beautiful when you see

  • What a song, their best in my opinion

  • So so good, how times have changed. A time of unbridled innocence and wonder. Priceless

  • Thank you KaleLad for the lyrics..

  • thanks friend I got it

    I wish you the best

  • They found America and were pleased.

  • Ich liebe dieses Lied. Immer wenn ich es höre, bekomme ich Fernweh. Ich weiß auch nicht, weiso....

    Liebe Grüße aus Berlin!

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written :)

Check out David Bowie playing it at the 911 concert in New York, it's wonderful.

  • I just looked it up, at your suggestion, and it was terrible :(

    love the S&G version, though!

  • please tehguy give me a lyrics for this song

  • please give me a lyrics of this song (america)

    thanks

  • NICE VID!(my S&G's favourite.)

  • I know everyone loves Simon and Garfunkel, I do too but you seriously need to let some comments go. It's all about harmony and peace, how could anyone get so angry over such a gentle song.

    Love this song.

  • *_* so beautiful

  • you could not be more wrong -- this is america, from simon and garfunkel's bookends, released in 1968....it's one of the great songs ever written...the film almost famous confirms that

  • And what a film that is.

  • Additionally, it was the opening theme for

a controversial and hence little-seen 1969CBS-TV presentation "Songs Of America".

It was intended as a cinema-verite portrait of S&G on tour & in studio, but when producer

Charles Grodin teamed up with them it turned into a real ultra-liberal Michael Moore-ish endeavor...CBS was furious, sponsor AT&T pulled out, and the show ultimately aired but once, in a beat-out time slot. But it was

awesome. Wish it were on commercial DVD re-release..!

  • :) Wow, yeah, this song works brilliantly on Almost Famous. Great film too!

  • so it's nice

  • dude...

thats one of the most STUPID comments i´ve ever seen!

  • I'm from England, as, indeed, was Kathy. One of the greatest experiences of my life was watching the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike from a Greyhound bus with the song going through my head, then seeing the New York skyline for the first time. Unbelievable!

  • LOVE this song!!

  • I was about to add this to my favorites and youtube had a button for me to remove it from my favorites (meaning that it's already on my favorites).

I love this song with all my heart. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

  • this song belongs in the show weeds, perfect song for a perfect show...

  • This song still chills my spine. Thanks.

  • Even for me as german, this song shows me how impressing america can be. every time i listen to this song i wish i'd be sitting in the central park, watching the people walking around ect..

simon & garfunkel are really the greatest musicans of the 20th century

  • This is so mellow! lol I'm Irish and in 2 months i'll be gone to look for America...

I AM GOIN TO L.A! how cool is that!

  • not really

  • Mmmmmmm, very pleasant listening. Whenever I get lost in this crazy world I listen to any songs off of the Simon & Garfunkle's Greatest Hits compilation. Then I don't see the forest OR the trees...I see the roots.

  • Great comment! I love it!

  • great song

  • My favorite S&G song. Always made me want to run away--except I didn't have a Kathy to go with me....

  • Amen brother! Kathy I'm lost....

  • heartbreaking, isn't that line?

  • Лучшее видео, чувак.

Greatest video for the song, dude. Really mean it.

  • if only one could make that same journey and find the same love and optimism...

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever written by a duo

  • Great song, especially "...watching the cars on the NJ turnpike..." nice mention of my homestate.

  • try looking at the band Yes's cover of this song. 3x as long, alot more fast pased and really good!

  • beautiful song, beautiful country....once!

  • Paul Simon was greatly influenced by Stiggy Bloomstein who he wrote this song for.The lyrics were inspired by Larry Hagmans underpants that paul found one morning when he was walking down 54th street.

  • i once took a greyhound bus trip from ohio to NYC on a whim. this song played in my mind the whole time

  • The sheer power of S & G's songwriting/singing genius has propelled this clip, with nothing but a black, blank screen, to nearly 90,000 hits! That's amazing and a testament to their talent.

  • Absolutely true. It's like watching an MTV video but without the car chase, dancing girls and white smoke: just the artist's face and talent. Here we just need a black rectangle!

  • agree ohhhh too much...

Im empty im aching...and i dont know why..

    chills. pure chills.

  • Paul Simon: perhaps the most greatest singer-songwriter of the generation.

  • love it teh guy! more from bookends - for the non-believers - this man is quite astonishing.

  • Thank you so much for adding this!

I'm glad there's no video. The imagery of

this brilliant piece stands on it's own.

    Happy New Year! Peace

  • lovely song - been thinking a lot about america lately, like most englishmen i suppose. what a country - what a mess - what a future we are faced without them.

paul simon's song anticipates these doubts and problems. cathy, by the way, was english...

  • My favourite lines are

"Kathy I'm lost"I said, though I knew she was sleeping

"I'm empty and aching and I don't know why"

How I have FELT these words!

  • Amen

  • I love Simon and Garfunkel :))

Their voices make me feel like dreaming

  • TehGuy's comments are very close to my own understanding of this song's meaning (having known and loved this song for nearly 40 years now). Definitely a coming-of-age sentiment here, and perhaps the dawning of a realisation that the heart's desire isn't a place at all - and that we're all in much the same boat, not knowing where it is, but searching. I'm still doing the same!

  • Your intro brought out the beauty in the song.I'd never listened to the words the whole way through. One wonders about the prescience of the spy reference and the cigarette in the gabardine coat before the whole thing turns to shit.Beautiful.

  • I probably shouldn't comment on this video...but to me it's a really beautiful song. I'm not an American by the way, I'm a proud Aussie. But still...the raw emotion in this song is wonderful. =]

  • You all are missing the point. It's about freedom to be whom God intended you you be. To inspire, worship, and give back to the planet something positive. We are all searching for the inner peace that this song reaches for. A chance to be Free and loved. \Peace!

  • What an utter heap of horseshit.

  • init haha xD

  • What are you talking about? The world ends at 49 degrees north! And that river to the south of Texas is Styx! We can't cross those bodies of water to the east and west! We'd fall off the planet into the abyss! Stop these fallacious comments right away, good sir!

  • good luck, ye of the inability to see subtly'n'such

  • Monsterblog...The TV was invented by another Brit John Logie Baird a Scotsman.

  • omg lol i just watched almost famous like 10 minutes ago and had to hear this song hehe

  • haha i'm watching it right now, it's the extended (bootleg) edition

  • Can,t beat America,it has the best of everything.

  • Firstly, I'm an Aussie and I didn't come looking for America. I love this song because beyond the name of the song the poetry says it all, it's about youth, adventure, discovery, breaking away, finding yourself, travelling and ultimately finding the first love. Would you agree?

  • america has been around since 1776,the declaration of independance and 231 years, not 515 years. thwe US Constitution was signed in 1787, which is 220 years ago..

  • America may be great but its a bit much to call it the greatst nation in history when its only been around 515 years.GREAT Britain has a greater history america only thinks its great cos size is power, america has also given the world many bad things. simone and garfunkel sing about many of the depressing things in america, your not as great as you think.

  • There's no such thing as the greatest country on earth anyway. Most people are going to think that their country is the greatest. But thinking like that doesn't make someone a patriot, it just makes them arrogant. I've come to find that most people who think their country is the best on earth haven't actually been anywhere outside their country anyway.

  • I agree with you, although my country is called Great Britain, ok so we invented things like the telephone, the computer and the internet and had a huge empire but that doesent make us the greatest country, we are not better then anyone else, infact the great bit is to cover up the fact that its although we are better off then some others shit place to live.

  • Antonio Meucci (Italian) invented the telephone

    ;-)

  • maybe im confused it must been the telegram we invented, but its a comon misconseption that the americans invented the internet, it was a British guy working for the americans, but we did invent tv's and radios, but in reality wat does it matter cos we do bugger all now.

  • America won WWII. Just ask any American.

  • You are certainly right.

  • "Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike"

    - great lyric, stunning song.

  • I have a different interpretation of the song, in which Simon and Garfunkel don't turn out to be communists. I think this song can mean that America is constantly seeking ever greater glory. But you may be right greenmanorite, they may very well be communists. Still, a true liberal and anti-communist like myself can listen to this as a patriotic song. :)

  • ??????????????????????????????????????????????

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • greenmanorite, how do you figure? many countries in europe, for example, have TV licenses, which means you have to get permission from the government to operate a TV, and they charge US$250+ for it. Then many have the communist health care system, where the government decides what kind of health care you get, and you have to wait weeks for it, and may die before getting a needed operation. Then there's the high gas taxes, which is a tax on the poor. btw I make US$7.75/hr or US$1080/month. :-)

  • America is not just a mythical idea, it is a real place, a glorious, free Nation, the greatest Nation in the history of the World. Vietnam was a mistake made by We the People, and it was the Constitution of this Great Nation that made it possible for We the People to correct it. As a USN submarines veteran, I remind American readers to remember the great privilege you have to be Americans and to able to enjoy the freedoms that come with that.

  • If you have money. If you're poor, you're better off living in Europe.

  • S&G!! TIGHT!!

  • Good song, but their best song ever is..."At the Zoo".

  • Aw, I LOVE 'At the Zoo' too.

  • I love this song!

  • describes an era of america. as only simon and garf can.

  • no video needed -- this is the greatest song ever written, sung with the greatest harmonies ever produced

  • If I had to pick one group to sum up my musical likes, hands down, it would be S&G.

  • Damn, no wonder the video loaded so quickly, lol.

  • Growing up on a farm in the 60's. Sweating in bed every night until it got cool enough to sleep. Nothing to look forward to but another day in the fields. I think listening to this song on an old 8 track was the only thing that kept me alive. Now, looking back--those were the GOOD times...

  • this is a nice song, this is real music.

  • I'm empty and aching and I don't know why...

  • I know why, now

  • Isn't it suposed to put videos here? At least the lyrics! I know the song is good enough, but what the heck!

  • yeah at least put old glory waving at us or something. hell we all have the song somewhere.

  • I love this song so much :)
