I'm from Hawaii and I LOVE Cajun music and culture. For a long time Pidgin English was looked down upon, much like Cajun French. But, thank some enlightened linguists they recognize Pidgin English as a real language with real grammar. I love it when DL Menard says that Cajun French is its own language..their own language.
I love seeing video like this to show our wonderful but dying cajun culture. D.L. Menard and the other musicians in this video are amazing!! This is why I am proud of my culture--enjoy it!
Comment ca va, Chere ami! I am a proud cajun, born in Lake Charles, La and raised in Crowley and Lafayette, La. The talented accordian player in this video is Robert Jardell. He is my cousin.
Robert Jardell is a well known cajun music accordianist, who has recorded many CDs of french music. Check one out, its fantastic .
As Tompall Glaser said: "Put another log on the fire, cook me up some bacon and some beans, then go out to the car and change the tire, wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans." Great music.
Argh! I wish I could speak Cajun French. From the 50's to about the 90's there was an attempt to destroy the language. Now, people are realizing what a mistake that was.
You've gotta remember. The Cajuns had their land taken, were put onto boats, and exiled from France. So, our (the Cajuns) language did not evolve as did Parisian French. That's why it sounds so different.
yes DL is still alive and kickin. I'm from Rayne LA. about 10 miles from where he lives in Church Point. And yes cajun is different from french.Christine Balfas father Dewey Balfa and my granddads farm ajoined one another here in Acadia Parrish. Glad you like the music ya'all need to come down sometime. ha ha
its really interisting, gives me the desire to join these guys.. what is funny is that their language sounds different than french, but their american accent looks like the french one.. hm just my impression anyway.
Thanks, meloderon for posting.Love the history lesson from DL,and Christine Balfa. This music is an art form not to be lost, and taught to the younger generation.
Having an accent when speaking a language other than your mother tongue is nothing to be ashamed of. This clip is very interesting. It's great to see people enjoying their culture. I love Cajun music and I'm thrilled that I can even understand some of the lyrics, thanks to my knowledge of French as it is spoken in Quebec.
They're talking about Cajun culture. I'm sure the majority of Americans know that the entire population of LA is not Cajun. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I live in NC and I wish we had Cajuns here. I'd enjoy the food, entertainment, camaraderie, and laid back way of life.
how come every time they make a special or a video or something on t.v. about louisiana, it is just insulting us in one way or another... im sorry but they just .. idk they always but the people who can't talk properly on the video and now everyone thinks we ALL talk like that. Our culture has always been insulted one way or another for as long as our culture has been around...

Why are the sub titles in Dutch???
JimmieDoyle 4 years ago
The movie is a part of a documantary that was broadcast on the Dutch television.
That was many years ago.
There's also a part about Zydeco with Geno Delafose on my account.
