the advice didn't suit your playing... it may very well have because that style of playing may be more comfortable to someone else than you...

he was giving you an alternative way to try... to see if it was more comfortable and you put him down on his playing...

and i'm pretty sure there is a differance between cutting your thumb off and an alternative way to play a particular thing on guitar...
