This is not really a Mac vs PC debate. But I see why people would confuse it with that.. It's more of a CPU debate really. Xeon's are old "server" CPU's whereas the i7 2600 are fairly new CPU's. The description is very wrong. It should be i7-2600 vs Xeon, Not vs Mac Pro..

They have i7 CPU's in the new iMacs, so you would be better of testing this with an i7 quad core iMac than a Mac Pro Quad Xeon.

i7-2600 without overclocking here. 3.7 GHz is normal Turbo Mode and guess what: Intel is best prepared against what AMD will be capable of with its Bulldozer.

I like the idea of a CPU with 2 or 4 cores and integrated graphics more than a naked 8core without any software able to use all the cores well. Imagine your Video Card gets broken and you still wanna play. Also, energy efficiency is very good from 1 core Celeron to 4 core i5/i7.

A Sandy Bridge is a Sandy Bridge and any of them is good <3

After Effects (and the whole Adobe suite) has a lot to do with the graphics card (Nvidia takes advantage of the new Mercury engine) and the total amount of RAM installed so you can assign more cores to the installed memory. Although AE doesn't support Mercury, it is more than possible that a faster GPU combined with the i7 2600 will always outperform the older Xeons with an cheaper GPU (especially if it is equiped with a common ATI chip and not the Firepro).

@crossisonlyasign this is not always the case. I use a new MacPro at work and it gets whooped by my 1.5 year old oc-ed Q9650 so much so that its not even funny. I looked around in the system info why this is so, as the Mac should be at least close. The ram on the mac is slow at best & the mobo must be bottle necking the xeons ins a huge way. My systems use 8GB of ram, yet the mac is at 1067mhz and mine at 2000. Gpu only comes in to play in preview, rendering is a diff story, $3500 Mac a waste.
