Dogs are great when you have the flu! Really...I had a bad case and my two dogs slept next to me. One on each side. Their body warmth made me sweat the toxins out and eased my aches and chills. At the very least they are a good analgesic to help with the pain. ;D

I have a beautiful Black Lab named Mindy. I had her since she was 8 weeks old. In 2005 I came down with pancreatitis where the doctors didn't expect me to survive but I did. Looking back, I remember Mindy doing different things just before I got sick. She would cling to me like glue and would lay down real tight next to my chest. She knew something was wrong. Since then whenever something is wrong with me, she glues herself to me and lies next to where the problem is.

I am a veterinary technician and a physical therapist assistant. Animals are a great way to motivate any patient who enjoys them. Plus, I strongly believe animals have talents we have yet to tap / discover like cancer detection and warning their owners of physiologic changes such as hypoglycemia or seizures. And, in my opinion, you couldn't put those talents into a better wrapping than a golden retriever, but every breed has its fans.

So happy you pointed this out. I believe all dogs need to have a purpose beyond frendship. Each of my dogs have a "job" to do according to ability. Bodie, my lab has the most jobs. Several of my dogs are disabled in some way, and Bodie wonderful helping them get around. She sleeps on my bed and her added warmth does wonders for my arthritis. Aren't dogs marvelous!
