ive shot some variants including hornday 53gr which is super accurate but if you on a budget give tulammo 55gr a try, my dpms 1:9 5.56 barrel at 16 inches dosent have a problem grouping under 1.5inch at 200 most of the time under an inch, iam glad i gave it a try, iam sure my 10x mil scope helps too but hey its only 5bucks for 20 at walmart...great vid keep it up.
Nice shooting and grouping! I buy these bullets for my m4 at my range here in canada not hollow tip though $14 for 20 shots I am going to start to reload my own rounds from now on.
It's not all that necessary, as the .223 does well with 45 and 55 gr bullets at 400 yards, etc., especially on prairie dogs. When I posted the video, it was the first 400 yard shooting I had attempted.
@tnoutdoors9 I have a Bushmaster 223 cal and was wondering if someone can help me with desiding what bullet weight to shoot with a 1-9 twist barrel. I don't want to waste ammo on something that won't shoot well because of the twist. I think you need a faster twist (ie 1-12 for a bullet over 55 or 62 grain. Appreciate 16inch barrel......any help!

Good shooting & setup, I shoot a AR15 in the UK & I have stretched mine out to 1000 yds using 77 grain Lapua heads, 1/8 twist barrel 20 inchs. It can be done.
Im using the Lapua 77 grain scenars the BC of this head is 0.402. Im using 24 grains of varget powder the secret is to tune your ammunition to your barrele getting the OAL correct & so on but im sure you all ready know that. great vids keep it up.
Shooting a grand is my next goal with this rifle. From what I've heard, I've been fortunate to stabilize 75 grs in this 1:9 twist. I'm not up for a barrel change. For my 1000 yd attempt, I'm thinking about the Federal Gold Medal Match in 69 gr. Of course, I'll also try it with the best 55 gr ballistic tip I can find, just for the heck of it....and hope to keep it in the same zip code.
Thats a tough shot at that distance.. with my buddies 1:9 twist 20in I can get a three shot burst 11 inches at 700 yards... That was on a real calm day. I used my 1:8 in 16in barrel and get good groups at 500 yards. Thats with 62 grain remingtons i belive been a while... But I would like to see that vid if u make it that would be impressive, I know threre is somebody out there doing it though
with your set up, could you get a good group at 1000 yards or is that pushing it with a .223 I was hoping to get a 1:8 twist stainless 26 inch I think or is a 24 lol. with 80 grain bullets, Do you think its possible? great shooting by the way!!!
That would be pushing it. Although this rifle is accurate, I would probably need a custom barrel at that distance, and some heavy bullets. I have access to a spot that I've lasered at 900 yards, but I need perfect conditions (and time) for that setup.
I noticed that you had commented on the 860 yd AR video posted by scottys1, which is probably the best I've seen. For everyone else, it's posted in my "Favorites" list.
Good video you did the whole drill shooting, and showing the target while shooting ,Then a close up of the target. Well done, and you did good on the kentucky windage like many do while engaged.
In Tennessee, this caliber is now legal for deer. This would not be my first choice unless a SHTF situation, but I would probably go for a head shot to conserve meat. For turkey, not a good choice at all. You need a shotgun to blow the head off.
Not that I recommend it but there's a lot of people that shoot whitetail with .223. One of my good friends has shot a ton of bucks with a good 62gr bonded soft point. You have to plan you shot double lung broadside. They will perform fantastic in that situation but I wouldn't try a shoulder shot, your likely to get an entrance only with little or no blood trail. This is a great vid by the way!
What's funny is just 1 week ago I shot an 8 point right in the neck with my new R-15 from Remington. Dropped him on the spot with a 55gr. Softpoint. I hit him about 8 in. down from the back of his head, at about 30 yards. The bullet passed through cleanly.
great shooting, I own the same rifle, expept yours is stainless. And I believe my barrel is 26 in and it is fluted... anyhow, Me and my brothers love to do long range shooting, and we have been doing alot of stuff at 500 yards using 75 gr wolf hollow points. And we are getting about a 18 inch drop... do you know what your drop is at 400? great vids
I guess that works for the videos you do but for any serious hunting and target shooting, your really limited with what you can do.
With target turrets I can shoot my .223 at 100 yards then adjust and be on target at 500 yards, all in a matter of seconds. - given there's no wind of course ; )
True for hunting. With the scope set for 200 yards, I typically setup within that range. In the event I have to take a longer shot, yes, I would be using hold-over. I keep the numbers in my head for the load I'm using. If/when I purchase another scope, that will be the goal.
Good vid. Not a fan of the M16 design (dirty design), but can attest its accuracy....hit the shot spotter spindle at 500 yard line a few times. If they would just add a gas piston (SKS type) instead of letting gas directly into the chamber, it would improve its reliability. None the less, good shooting.
nice gun, I have a Bushmaster V-match w/ a Harris bipod 12x Bushnell and I love the set-up. Some of us are fortunate to have privately owned land, while it seems like most of these idiots probably live in an apartment and pay thousands for a shitty deer lease. On our own land we can do what we want whenever the F**K we want!
Perhaps you should ask some questions before making such an assumption. This is posted private property in a rural community; has been family owned for decades. I walk the property before each shooting session. There are thousands of uninhabited wooded acres downrange. The target is on a hillside, perfect backstop. I was not hunting....did you not see the target on the zoom view? I also reviewed satellite photos to see the lay of the land for this property and surrounding area. Questions?
And you are pesfectly sure, that in a forest there are not your younger brother, lost torist, neibourgs dother whu coming to you, or enybody else? Or animal- you can hit it, but probably don't kill it. Open field,as wide as its possible will be much better. Accidents are usualy stupid, and hardly to explain.
Positive. For months at a time, I am the only person on the property. I also don't shoot at all during deer hunting season, as family members could be present. That would be evident before I even venture into the woods.
Your odds of being struck by lightning are much greater.
its his property. he can do what he wants. . thanks for the great review. i also have a varmintor.its a wonderfull rifle at any range. if you you start hand loading . you will be amazed how tight groups can get.
I think it would be a good purchase. My preference would be the 22" model vs. 18" carbine, as I want to squeeze all I can out of the .223 . One thing I would look at closely is the trigger. I may be wrong, but I think it's single-stage. The Varminter is a two-stage trigger, making for a smoother trigger pull. However, I'm betting you could get the trigger swapped-out if you found it was too "harsh". Also, I believe that Bushmaster assembles the R-15, or at least they used to at one time.

If you do use this for deer make sure it's a head or neck shot. The bullet isn't big enough or heavy enough for a body shot.
