I never even heard that hideous Etta James record until they started beating it to death on TV commercials. Glenn Miller's version of this song is an example of how high a standard American music had risen to in the days before WWII. Etta James' drug-laden banchee wailing butcherization of it is an example of what happened after American culture sank into the lugubrious mire of rock ' n' roll. The rock generation has never lived during a period where good music was appreciated.
The Glenn Miller version was a huge success and very popular...Ray Anthony became famous as a result of his trumpet solo for "At Last" and Ray Eberle was a heart throb in his time....It was probably more popular than was Etta's version, until it was performed in a very subpar version by Beyonce at the Inauguration..., then the hype took over and youtube had it's way.....let's face it, Beyonce is no Etta James or Patricia Friday....
Amazing video. Looking with a full screen, the women are natural beauties, the ambiance is incredible. Makes me think of happier times, when people were good, moral values were important. Boy those days are over....
It was so wonderful when talented people all had a shot when they held auditions at the studios (radio or a Hollywood studio) instead of everyone standing in line with only few selected. It's like the singers today have to beat their heads against the wall or have a story.
I don't like the televised shows for talent because everyone is pre judged anyway...and nothing is a surprise. They only choose the ones out of line that have been selected before hand. It's all such a scam, but not then.
Thanx so much for putting this on. I adore this song and I agree it will always be a Glenn Miller song for me too. It is so beautiful it gives me goose bumps. Thanx again.
@bulldogbarks55 - Without Etta James version, Miller wouldn't have gotten wealthy. I agree the orchestra version is very classy and beautiful, Etta James brought the song to life. Just like Hound Dog, everyone thinks that is Elvis Pressleys song, but it isn't...
@diamondgirl828 With all due respect to Ms. James the Glenn Miller version of "At Last" was released at least 15 years before Etta's. Anyone from the WWII generation and the years leading up to Etta's rendition still think of "At Last" as a Glenn Miller standard. Glenn's money from the song was already in the bank earning interest by the time Etta recorded the tune. Glenn tragically died in a plane crash over the English Channel in 1944. Therefore, I stand by my original statement.
@bulldogbarks55 - I don't doubt what your saying, I just have another opinion. I honestly don't think the song was that popular prior to Ms. James releasing her version. Etta James' version is what is played at weddings because not too many people are familiar with the Glenn Miller version. Same applies to Obamas inagguaration ball, Etta's version was perfromed, by Beyonce. Thanks for the info, you must have been a Glenn Miller fan. Another tragic death to soon. for Miller : (
No one can match Ray Eberle or Lynn Bari in tone or voice. Voice modulators can go to HELL!!!!!!!

As much as I like the Etta James version, I think this song is done better in this kind of setting/arrangement.
Either way, it's a great song written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon.

Jackie Gleason on bass, Caeser Romero on piano

Always loved this film. Maybe they're just acting, but I sense sexual electricity between Lynn Bari and Ray Eberly. Terrific.

There's a Goodman, Shaw, Dorsey, James, Basie, Ellington, Kaye, and etc. But the best swing big band ever is Alton Glenn Miller and His Orchestra!

@bulldogbarks55 oh just zip it. It's great yes, but you don't need to slam the woman that made the song what it is: FAMOUS!
