  • Is this guy even British?

  • Nello7, and exactly who are u to determine such individualistic, opininative and incoherent personal opinion as a whole?

  • Love Kaufmann's huge voice. I'm a Franco Corelli fan as well, and think Kaufman is in that league. I don't think La Donna e Mobile is the best type of aria for him, - the Duke of Mantua is not worthy of such a heroic voice -- I still think it sounds great.

  • Honestly on the fence here. He has some flow phonation issues because of the risks that he takes. His colors change quite often. With that being said, if he just sang this with an equalized flow it would be a very good performance indeed.

  • Impressive, no words...

  • 35 people couldn't sing along

  • amazing. i have no words for this.

  • bello

  • WOW......

  • Anyone else think the flautist at 1.59 looks a bit like Arnie high on coke?

  • The score I have I believe is in F# which this lines up exactly with the score I have

  • yes the aria is in Bflat not in B

  • @magisterandrew It's in B major

  • where's the russian with the waldo shirt?

  • Bravísimooooo!!!!, Saludos desde Córdoba, Argentina.

  • todo cargado el sonido, don't know how to say that in English...

  • Kaufmann looks like a weakminded boy but has a good voice, he should well learn singing, although the insecure tune out of pitch is irremediable.

  • Kaufmann has a good voice, he should well learn singing. Even if he does, I think the tune out of pitch is irremediable.

  • Excellent!

  • He would have a nice tenor voice if he'd not sing that throaty... Where's the warmth that other really great Heldentenöre (Melchior, Giacomini, Heppner) have? Vinay was a baritone (like Melchior) who turned Heldentenor. I don't like Vinay (too wobbly) really, but prefere his middle range to Kaufmann's. Kaufmann would be really great if he not that much overdid his baritonality in the lows. Seems an awful force he needs... Doesn't relax me.

  • 1:56 arnold schwarzenegger...:-P

  • Fantastically well singing.

What makes Kaufman a little extra interesting is that he not sings with the classic tenor voice (the tenor timbre). Kaufman is among the "Great Masters".

  • bravo! maestro!!

  • EARGASM.

  • @ozymandias0veidt Yeahh !! exactly : "eargasm" ! I didn't know this pun !

  • Sencillamente genial. Bravo kaufmann

  • The 'School of Jose Cura' so sad...

  • how do people think this voice sounds fake or pushed? it's natural, resonant and well placed

  • the B is flat

  • He sings this style of music well. I like him but feel he is being pushed to sing too much Wagner: why? He is a middle period Verdi tenor and will sound great in French repertoire too. He does not have to sing everything all at once to have a career. He is a wonderful man and I wish him success. What really turns me on is his musicality. I think he can make a killing with Fidelio.

  • The most powerfull tenor voice I have ever heard. How on earth does he do it, if I try going that high with a tone like that, my voice just cracks up every time. Bravo! Standing ovation from Finland!

  • Far too heavy for this role. Not a voice for bel canto IMO.

  • @jmiller05 Verdi is NOT bel canto.

  • @ptgunit Very true, but the best singers always sing it bel canto.

  • Shut up the Envy. Jonas is the best tenor nowadays.

  • Great ! And a wild applause from Jodé carreras... No comment... What else ?

  • Some German men have such lush dark olive or tan skin....I wonder where it comes from?

  • @looker768 Some of them can trace their heritage back to the French Hugenots, so it can come from there. There was also a wave of immigration from Italy in the 19th Century, so some of it comes from there. You might have to ask Jonas directly about his situation.

  • Bruttissimo e microfonato.

  • This guy is amazing!

  • Wonderful ! Jose Carreras applaud with a great respect. And HE knows a lot about singing. Thank you to those two great singers...

  • wow!im speechless..i envy the guy..what a powerful God given instrument

  • the duke on crack/steroids. i like it. i like it a lot. : )

  • I understand this is a recital/concert performance, but he should not sing the Duke. Ever. His voice is too heavy for it. I love him in Wagner (His Siegmund was terrific!!!), though.

  • @LordHettrick Did you see the Met HD? He was specular! =D

  • Helden tenor?

Such a unique easy flowing voice..5 star tenor...and that fellow in the crowd was Jose Carreras

  • A horrible perfomance,a bad imitation of Vickers and high notes worth of a dog.

  • @Liu666able You obvously have no idea whatever about operatic voices. It is a totally different voice from Jon Vickers. Why do you even listen to great singing when you have dog's ears, let alone comment on great voices and artists. The applause after Jonas certainly refutes any comment you might make!

  • @tantris3 Ii have much more idea and taste than you miserable stupid.

    Read carefully,I said a "bad copy"of Vickers.

He sings on the throat and has a horrible diction, nothing to do with good singing

As far as the "applause"is concerned that is the stupidest and poorest explanation regarding his singing

You have no ears, not even dog's ears.

  • @Liu666able You are an ignorant, uncultured sociopath that gets sadistic pleasure out of trashing people of achievement. Get some help before it is too late. Vickers (I sang opposite Vickers at the Vienna Staatsoper) would never sing the role of the Duke for religious reasons, so your comparison with Kaufmann is ridiculous if not maligning from someone with absolutely no credentials to do so.

  • MrDarknesslover: 2-In specific terms look at the piano-vocal score where the role of the Duca will be seen to be more in keeping with the vocal line of Bellini than later Verdi. Examples of heavy voices in the Duca's music can be heard in the recordings of Caruso--very strained 'Parmi veder'; Martinelli, etc. Corelli butchered 'La Donna' Del Monaco did better but its the wrong sound. Some lyrics by the way have a very dark middle voice a case in point being Jan Peerce.

  • Sehr gut!!

  • Super! The best tenor of the present!

  • OMG SO SO SO AMAZING

  • Grande,grande grande.

  • I love SPINTO TENORS!!!!! Ah dio!!!!!

  • Perhaps you "true opera fans" can criticize his voice but you cannot criticize his stage performance. He is manificent and he draws crowds like no one else. Operatic talent is multifaceted, like it or not.

  • Last Sunday night, Jonas Kaufmann made his triumphant debut in the San Francisco bay area at the University of California, Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. He was sensational.... and we made him take 4 curtain calls. What a night it was!

  • nothing like faking up the sound

  • Jonas, Du singst so toll, danke

  • he is as somebody says : a baritenor

  • @jfsanin No baritenor about him. He's just a tenor that actually sings like a man.

  • 2:21 Hehe, Carreras. :)

  • He`s a lower tenor (spinto). He`s stunning... omg.

  • esta es una voz!!!!!!!! increible!!!!!!!!

  • Looks effortless! Love his expressions, too. :D

  • Nice "Bravo" at the end from Jose Carreras. Kaufman sang this brilliantly.

  • Awesome. It was pretty hilarious watching Katherine Jenkins sing una voce poco fa and then Jonas sing this right afterwards. Chalk and cheese. Or maybe turd and Jersey cream would be more apt.

  • BARITONE OR TENOR ??????????????????????'

  • @PadrinoxD Tenor; if Pavarotti is exceptionally famous for singing it, one doesn't even need to go to hassle of actually researching which role it is

  • @PadrinoxD tenor!!!!!! tenorazo!!!!!!!!

  • @PadrinoxD I'll eat my hat if a baryton can sing a B4 like herr kaufmann did here! Hahaha

  • LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE THIS VOICE!!!!!!!!!!11

  • Mike in a eather. No, no, no, Kauffmann. Nuh...

  • I think WiseMonkey888 has some serious issues.

  • naaa..fomeee

  • I cannot imagine a better Duke of Mantua than Corelli or Kaufmann. The only great voices who encompassed the looks of an irresistible womanizer.

  • @WiseMonkey888 I quite didn't undertand what you set out to convey!!!!! but, just for the record, my comment wasn't meant to criticize....I just expressed my surprise at the fact that voices this dark don't usually sing this rep!

  • Great! I've always heard this song but never knew it was from an opera or Rigoletto in fact.

  • This is a tenor with great potential for the future. A true opera star, with passion and unseen strength in his voice. Possibly the future's most respected singer.

  • Jonas is a lirico Spinto Tenor!

  • nice.. baritonal voice!

  • We might be looking at the next mario Del Monaco

  • yum yum the voice the passion the man =)

  • His technique is flawless!!

  • Beautifull warm voice - and super technik - I love it

  • beautiful voice..beautiful aria..beautiful environment

  • Peeling the paint right off those walls...

  • bravo!!!!

  • I'm in love! What a voice! What a charming person!

  • He took some time to find the high tone correctly - but did bravely in the end!

  • Omg! I think Im in love!

  • Extraordinario!!!

  • His voice is indescribable!!!

  • WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • nice ...but del Monaco had much more power!

  • amas akvs patara xma to? kai ra magis deda vatire ar mjera...

  • Elephants yeah! Excellent :)

  • It seriously sounds like Bryn Terfel singing high.

    Spintos rock. :)

  • @irregularverb37 As far as I know, he is no spinto. He's actually a heldentenor!

  • it astounds me how he dips down into that dark, sexy lower register and then pops out an effortless high C like it was nothing. that's talent you can't buy

  • I just don't think this is something that is suited for his type of voice.

  • He is so incredibly unique.

  • It is RIDICULOUS how powerful his voice is, even so high!

  • @iskivolkl11 His voice is technically called a "lyric spinto" which is a lyric voice with the dramatic capability to rise above the orchestra. This voice is especially suited to Verdi operas. Kaufman is a great spinto tenor.

  • @iskivolkl11 That's because he's singing into a microphone. Obviously he still has a powerful voice as he is singing Verdi, but there's a little extra amplicfication as well.

  • @iskivolkl11 Longer neck bigger cavern for the sound to vibrate...he was meant to sing opera haha

  • @iskivolkl11 I definitely had to get into a fight recently with someone who called his voice weak. I couldn't let the comment rest.

  • Beautiful, colorful and strong. This is how the duke might like to be interpreted.

  • @russzkij LOL... they guy has been singing full operas for about 15 years... I think he's doing pretty good. Too many people just look at the upper partials when they listen to tenors.... some tenors do have dark voices... and it's OK! It's a characteristic. God forbid if everybody sounded the same and were forced to sing in their noses all the time.

  • the best tenor around today by far

  • His voice matches Placindo's perfectly.

  • @russzkij What do you mean "if he can sing through a whole opera"? Jonas Kaufmann has sung in top opera theaters in the world. Most recently, he sang Don Jose at the Met. He also sang Lohengrin in Bayreuth, I believe.

  • MA-GNI-FI-QUE !!!

    Bravo Herr Kaufmann

et merci pour le post .

  • Si engola más, se ahoga.

  • @Haldirzam1986, tenés razón! es un milagro que haya sobrevivido.

  • @cevozza gracias por el envio amiga... No esperaba disfrutarlo tanto...

  • Bravo Bravo...

  • Somebody wrote "The best tenor in the world". Damn it, they might be right!

  • he sounds great...despite the dark timbre his voice still has that 'youthful' ring, especially on his high notes...and he has a nice smile :) besides, Placido Domingo started out as a baritone and has a dark timbre as well and it worked out pretty well for him considering he is still singing, so maybe these guys are onto something ;)

  • Bravo. His dramatic voice and style reminds me of MDM

  • Una sola parola: lastimoso...

  • I HATE this singer, I mean hate him. Blech!

  • @Cantormatis

Why do you hate him? Because he got this beautiful Tenor voice with a baritone timbre? and you are sooo jealous?

  • @Jaspervdk Personal taste is personal taste. I do NOT like this singer. The only thing I am jealous of is that he is thin and handsome. Vocally, I despise him.

  • @Cantormatis

Vocally you despise him? Now you make me wonder why. I believe that a Tenor with a Baritone-timbre is one of the most beautiful tenor's ... so does other people think 'bout this.

  • @Jaspervdk I think the Baritonal timbre of his voice is manufactured. That is, it seems put on as opposed to what his voice actually sounds like. Whether or not this is the case I know not, but I don't care for his singing either vocally or interpretively. I have heard hundreds of tenors of all varieties, including many with the baritonal quality you seem to like, that I would rather listen to than Kaufmann.

  • @Jaspervdk Look at his Un Aura Amorosa, and you'll see that his voice does not have baritonal timbre.. it's just the latest craze for tenors to "sing like baritones". Singers need to revert back to the natural pulling, creating space and making resonance, none of this overcovering and unnatural darkness.

  • Hmm...I don't know what to say about this, other than he has a nice voice, but he sounds like a baritone. He sounds like Domingo at the latter part of his career.

  • It seems to me that he is miming to a recording!

  • Like a baritone...

  • awful!

  • THE NEXT "3 TENORS": Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazón and Juan Diego Flores. Please!!!

  • I literally started laughing out loud when I read this Critico1... You are dead-on correct sir... Kaufman can be the Domingo-styled baritone crossover... Is not blatantly obvious that this gentleman is a baritone? When you cover on Bb (a fifth below where most tenors, not all granted, begin to cover doesn't that say something?! Where are the critics? Isn't it their job to weed out the phonies the recording industry tries to slip by the lay people? He sounds like Kermit the Frog 90% of the time!

  • @NathanaelSaintCyr I disagree with you. He is not a baritone. He is a dramatic Tenor and Tenors of this type tend to have a darker color and a timbre that allows their voice to cut through the large Wagnerian orchestras. I am a tenor and begin to cover (or adjust) to my mid voice aroung G3 on the staff.

  • @NathanaelSaintCyr Whenever I talk to people or have preliminary Voice lessons they immediately think that I am a baritone due to the depth of my voice. Different voices have different sounds. Just because his voice is darker and he has a different technique does not make him a Baritone.

  • @NathanaelSaintCyr He's not a baritone. He just tries to make himself sound like he's Del Monaco or something in his own ears by over covering and pushing down his larynx.

  • @critico1 eyyy that would be extremly perfect!!!!

  • Excellent very good voice, and people who take the trouble to write and leave your comment is not necessary to compare Kaufmann with someone else, simply listening and difruten of this great voice.

  • @ttirovapa

comparing doesn't have to be negative. it makes for good convo and if done without bias can be a good learning experience.

Bye.

  • Ténor dramatique ?

  • What an unusual thing to hear such a dark voice singing Rigoletto!!!!!!

  • @rrgallo Unusual but brilliant!

  • @rrgallo Unusual, BUT AMAZING!

  • @rrgallo the duke, believe it or not was meant originally for the most dramatic of tenors!

  • @songsofscarlet

makes sense to me. thin lyric tenor voices are NOT seductive

  • @songsofscarlet The dramatic tenor voice as we know it did not even exist when RIgoletto was first performed and with no disrespect where in the hell does this crap come from. The modern dramatic tenor is a product of late Verdi and the Verismo composers. The famous cadenza to La donna e mobile was not done all the time even during the early years of the 20th century witness the recordings by McCormack and Caruso.

  • @gaytenor dramatic tenors did not exist when.. what?
