It's totally Jersey Shore. Maybe that's what's uncomfortable about it now - when this film was made, this (lifestyle) was kind of compelling, culturally, but now we've adopted some pretty startling stereotypes about italian americans that were maybe instigated by stories like this and perpetuated by the Jersey Shore kids. It's tragic and weird and offends a population and an art form, it offends America... it's fucking uncomfortable and that's why we're captivated, unsettled and defensive.

An argument could be made that this is the best film of all time if one combines plot, direction, imagery, storyline, and of course acting. Incredible movie. Deniro was unbelievable of course but so was Pesci and everyone else did a tremendous job. Don't forget it was Scorcese's vision and his eye which put everything together. Scorcese's "marriage" to Deniro brought forth great film and acting. Eventually Pesci became part of the "team". Raging Bull was a great achievement.

DeNiro was always a favorite but after the early 90's with Goodfellas and Casino, just about untouchable.

But Pacino has powerful movies too. Scarface alone is damaging, and The Godfather? Forgettaboutit. Heat-a great movie but he played a cop, so as a rebel it was DeNiro I rooted for.

Both great American Actors, I'm proud of them both.

It's not about start to end in this movie. It's much more than that. It's the analysis of his personal downfall and how his anger got the better of him.

He ruined himself and his relations with the ones he loved most.

And it DID have to be in black in white because it's not about the flashiness in this movie. It's far deeper than that.

I think the most profound thing about this movie is the ending quote from the bible. All of his problems rooted from people judging him, perhaps had he been more empathetic to the people helping him his life would have been better, but I think the film tries to depict that he wasn't a bad person, just tormented.
