Pretty playing my friend. What's the big deal with the Dorian mode? Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, but I've heard from quite a few people that it's best to learn JUST the Dorian mode. ...any clue why that is?
@UglyScukuggly actually, i've never heard this about the dorian mode. usually they advise people to learn the major (ionian) and the minor (aeolian) modes because those are the basic scales. perhaps blues(ish) players like to incorporate the dorian into the blues pentatonic since it gives an extra spice, making it a transition between the major and the minor modes (especially if the 3rd is left out from the pentatonic scale). also, awesome guitarists use it (Gilmour), hence the popularity.
@jcscd well, when i recorded this video i had been playing for around 1.5 years, practicing min 3 hours a day. it really just takes dedicated practice and effort.
Knowing the basics about music theory involving modes, I have to say the dorian's raised 6th does give the form a slightly 'brighter' sound. Although personally it seems really hard to use Dorian without incorporating minor pentatonic as a backbone
Nice Muse shirt! This was superb. No shredding, yet retained both elements of technical and emotive playing. Also, glad to see someone else giving a take on this backing track, GMC absolutely has the best backing tracks, what a great place for serious guitarists. Cheers mate!
@iberko though tou're only playing the melodic minor.I got it now, though it still seems odd the fact that you can get a special vibe without playing the special notes...
But on the new 2011 custom 24 there is a five way switch. Its a normal switch and not s rotary switch... Sry about my bad english but im s 14- year old.boy from austria :)))
@61DORI on a PRS, the rotary switch IS the 5-way switch. the other option is a toggle 3-way switch. however, this 3-way switch allows 6 options: you can pull the switch up and this way you split the humbuckers to single coil pups. but this doesn't mean you have more opportunities, because the 5-way rotary systems and the push-pull toggle systems are set up totally differently, and only the basic settings (bridge humbucker only, neck humbucker only) are common.
cool solo it sounds very good, as a suggestion try to improve your vibrato... now it appears like kikr hammets is playing it for you.. seems like nervous
Great vid.. I have one question about the guitar: is the fret board completely flat like a Les Paul or SG, or does it have a slight curve like a Stratocaster or Tele? Cause Im kind of sick of my telecaster... sometimes the first string starts damping whenever I bend it so I can't sustain a bending on the E string. It needs to be adjusted like every month, which is not normal for non-professional users. That didn't happen whatsoever when I had my Les Paul.
@carletoznguitar well, there is a very slight curve on the fretboard, you can even check the radius parameters on the PRS website, but it's more flat than a strat. so somewhere in between a strat and a les paul. however, the curvature, in a normal case, shouldn't affect string resonance. if your E string needs readjustment, then perhaps there's something wrong with the bridge holding the end of the string OR one of the upper frets is dampening your string due to the metal rod not well set up.
@chiwa0113 in order: Em (E G B, four bars), C with major seventh (C E G B), D major with thirteenth (D Fsharp A G), Em, Em with thirteenth (E G B A), Em, Em with thirteenth, Em (two bars), C with major seventh, D major with thirteenth, Em, Em with thirteenth, C with major seventh, D major with thirteenth, Em, Em with thirteenth. sorry for not including numerals, YT claims error with posts including too many numbers.
@amziadi you're absolutely correct. the backing track does contain the D major w/ thirteenth and also the Em with thirteenth, but they contain the notes D-Fsharp-A-B and E-G-B-Csharp, respectively. sorry for the incorrect info. btw, those chords are not played in their full extension. they are mainly a root, a fifth and the thirteenth, without the third (or the seventh, which would be - in traditional music theory - compulsory when stacking notes to create a chord.
@iberko Thanks for replying! I know what you mean, modal music can be very tricky and unorthodox. In fact, I must be honest that although I know some of the theory behind the modes and have used them to improvise, I never really got a full grasp of how to compose chordal progressions that maintain their modal identity without morphing into their Ionian counterpart... I am mostly a blues player but I am a great admirer of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, which has made me more than once interested...
@12moetown you are right. all i wanted to do is help the guy by pointing out what notes to use in a similar solo. the notion of diatonic scales may not be that obvious for everyone.
You play very nice, but there's one thing I must point out to you: you're not doing your vibrato's tightly in time. You should vibrate 1/8 notes for example, right now you're just vibrating a bit sloppy :P. Vibriting in time is just one of those small details a lot of guitarists forget about. I hope that you'll do something with my tip :).
@panasony23 it's E Dorian, which is basically an E minor scale, but you play F# instead of F. this way, you use the same notes as in D major and B minor. (E F# G A B C# D)
@SuperGuitarBrad Logic Express 8.0.2. Basically any DAW will do (Steinber, Cakewalk stuff, etc.) as long as its a direct, line-in recording with the backing track already imported.
@JLGabaldon only Logic 9 studio assembled a better pack of guitar sound plug-ins, so at that time i had to rely on a Gearbox 3 tone from Line6 (virtual amp modeller). Amplitube, PodFarm, GuitarRig and any similar stuff will give you great tone for recording if you want to save on professional hardware.
@iberko do you not find the bridge hfs pup sounds a bit to bassy? im used to dimarzio fred and find on my new prs custom 24 the bridge sounds really big and boomy on the lower strings
@uomoscozzese overall, the pickup is a really high-gain model, with a huge signal level. it is admittedly more suitable for that crunchy type of rock sound, which needs a lot of warmness and a rich mid EQ range. but personally i play a lot of progmetal and most of my sound is generated in my zoom 9.2tt pedal or the vox/marshall amps that are available in rehearsal rooms around budapest. with that much gain in the pups, it's pretty easy to dial in a more screamy sound and cut off low frequencies
Hey, I love your playing! Hearing this track got me onto guitar masterclass and now I'm learning this very same solo.
A few weeks later and I'd forgotten about this video. I was looking around for a guitar upgrade and had pretty much settled on a PRS CE 22. I was looking around for some vids of people playing PRS guitars and ended up here... full circle! Must be fate :D
I think a bunch of youtubers get confused over key signatures and modes .the key sig of F is the b's are flat .thats the key signature .not the mode .the dorian mode is a minor scale with a sharpend 6th.keep the modes and key signatures seperate ..You can use a mode over a scale to enhance it with the cord pattern you are playing ..Alot of stuff there ,any questions please ask I will help you ...
@fadingblack37 G dorian is a relative scale to F Major scale. this scale has only 1 altered note: Bb (B-flat). this means that it won't sound good if you play over either a B major or B minor scale. if you are careful with the Bb note, you may solo over an A minor scale (minor scale with A as root note), and you can comfortably play over a D minor scale (since it is another relative scale to G dorian)
@corym1117 thanks! well, for this vid the tone was setup in Gearbox3. i played via a Toneport UX1 that went straight into Logic 8. so no physical amps here, only some random Marshall-simulation.
Well I may have got lucky. My local dealer said he found one of these in new york. I don't know much about it, so could be nothing. He said it was a blue matteo with birds. That's all I know. Going to see if I can get a date on when it was made.
@Clipster15 you should definitely check that guitar. and check the 6-digit serial number at the back of the headstock. if you compare it with the FAQ section on PRS's homepage where they indicate from which serial to which serial they made the guitars in each year, you can pretty accurately guess the year and the part of the year yours was made in
@iberko Thanks. Yeah, I just got the dealer to find out when it was made. It's an 07.. :\ The dealer in new york claims it's in *mint* condition. Ill believe it when I see it, I guess. It will have the old birds then, but that should be the only difference from your newer model. We'll see.
@goldenfire88 Yeah, they discontinued "Blue Matteo" two months after I bough mine last summer. Still, I'm pretty sure PRS will either bring back this color in a few year's time or come up with something even more stunning :)
@94029374938402048 well, a lot of the tone comes from the pickups, but what you hear is actually a tweaked factory preset from Gearbox 3. i can't remember which tho, i guess it was one of the Marshall amp models
@sjalajelameiol Dragon pups are available in the Custom 22 model and they have silver or gold cover plates. in mine, I have a Vintage Bass at the bridge and an HFS at the neck.
thanks! the neck is wide thin (the other choice for custom 24s is "regular"), but over the 12th fret there isn't any difference between the two. regular necks are a bit more chunky below the 12th fret to play chords easier or something. the sound is basically a tweaked preset from line6 gearbox 3
Sorry, accidentally removed your comment, wanted to press "reply" instead of "remove" pff....
Anyway, great to hear about your upcoming guitar! Artist upgrade... wow! And it's always either a rotary switch (most common) or the 3-way toggle but both at the same place, that sucks. This can due to the carve of the body, imo... not much space left below the pups, would be in the way etc. However, something like on the Hiland-modell could be applied somewhere near the volume knob...
hey check out my video. It's a dorian lesson.

This can due to the carve of the body, imo... not much space left below the pups, would be in the way etc. However, something like on the Hiland-modell could be applied somewhere near the volume knob...

Yeah good thinking, the Hiland model is great! and he himself is an awesome player!..... I have actually got used to where the switch is so...

it was a panasonic SDR S-150 camera. but for quality on youtube the type of decoder and video format you use is just as important.
