The man doesn't play. I saw this on POPSTARS back in 2001. He really made those girls cringe, shake, panic and he certainly gave quite a few of them major slices of humble pie.
See, I have been wanting to upload singing videos on YouTube or to send David Foster recordings of myself, seeing as he lives here in Canada. The only thing holding me back is that I've seen his behavior on television...he seems like a hardass. And I know he is very precise and a perfectionist as well. I'd probably be very easily intimidated by him.
WILDFLOWER, probably one of the most inspirational songs ever in my life. It's the only song that will significantly takes me back to my youth every time I hear it. I remember vividly the chill that went up my back as this song truly made a lasting impression. Even today if I hear it, I will stop to relinquish that feeing.
Wow! You can respect David for his musical ability sure enough, but I was just so touched by his compassion for children with transplant needs.I have a heart for orphans so I understand his compassion for children.Thank you for caring. God bless you David, we need many more like you.
I would love to work with/for him, to learn the craft. Call him what you want, He truly makes performers better. Adding productive insight into everything they do... Keepin On David F'n Foster you bloody genius! He is humbly cocky... I love when he says I'm gonna get 10% more out of you than anybody else, and the interviewer says 'How do you do that' and he says... Well, I don't know... LOL
Linda cares about HOLLYWOOD LIFE and never gives a thought to anyone else who happens to be poor or black. She will tell you different but the reality show (short as it was) spoke volumes. Linda is that TWAT that was real to her ambition of being taken care of....
I remember a Swedish reporter who went so frustrated with David's humility that she finally said: "But you have to have something to brag about?! Come on"!
David's response to that was just that he'd been helped by so many other people that he just couldn't take all the credit alone.
The best thing about it is that's it's genuine and nothing of that false humility crap you often run into (often among singers).

Disagree with last 2 posts. It's an engaging interview. This reporter has a genuine enthusiasm for his subject and draws out some interesting observations from Foster about his art. I have rarely, if ever, seen a reporter explore the issue of how / why musical artists tend to lose their inspiration as they age. It was fascinating to hear Foster's take on the question. It was in the early 90's, I haven't heard of David Foster but that evening I entered a music store in Al Khobar, I glanced over the CD with his name. I tried it and I was not yet through with the first record I marched up to the cashier and paid for it.
Then Grammy came and I heard his name nominated. And years passed by, all the great singers blazed the airwaves, but then again with David Foster on the side or at the helm of the singer's career.
Thanks David for bringing the best out of Charice's singing. She is the best singer in the world right now regardless of age. And to think that she's only 17. Amazing. Thanks again David.
And she sounds EXACTLY, and I mean, EXACTLY like Whitney Houston, it's almost scary. I actually thought she was lip syncing at David's Hit Man concert.
This guy is the master! Musically, songwriters coming up today don't even have a CLUE how to compose and arrange like these old cats like David Foster. I listen to his stuff and take it apart to see what he's doing.
Thank you David Foster for all the incredible music. I know music is "youth-driven business". I'd prefer to believe it's driven by youthful people. I am so inspired by what happened with Susan Boyle. That's why I'm going to keep singing!...with God, all things are possible, no matter what the world says...
So Ummm...WHO is this interviewer "Smultz"...??? He's incredibly insensitve, insulting, belittleing, and predominately a basic JERK in his asking questions of David Foster. David did not deserve this horse turd's approach at all. David is a most impressive artist and pianist. Period..!
I'll never forget seeing david foster at a Clay Aiken concert in Pasadena, sitting right in front of me and I didn't know it was him, spoke to him and didn't get it. Duh.
Wow. What a beautiful interview. Love it. I learned some new things about this great producer and composer who has moved the hearts and minds of so many through his work. I love how he snapped his fingers after he says "Do you know how long you're on this planet for? "That Long". Great. It's so true. Every breath, every moment we have to share is a pure miracle. I love the way great art kisses the heart and mind of our humanity and always reminds us to feel.
I think that David is a very good producer and songwriter. One of his best songs is the song from Celine Dion 'The colour of my love'. Great lyrics and melody.
A wonderful, new version of "The Colour of My Love" is included on the album FLY AWAY: THE SONGS OF DAVID FOSTER! This record includes tremendous performances courtesy of Chicago's lead singer Bill Champlin, Jeff Pescetto, the late Warren Wiebe, Bill LaBounty, Joe Pizzulo, Bill Cantos, etc. The line-up includes David Foster, Jay Graydon, Michael Landau, John Robinson, Nathan East, Neil Stubanhaus, Abe Laboriel, Paul Jackson Jr and Brandon Fields. Don't miss it! Available on CDBaby NOW!
I don't think the interviewer's disrespectful - He's just blunt.
Foster isn't offended - the interviewer's only asking what many music critics say. I glad he discussed this criticism with Foster directly and not doing what blog critics do - snarkily diss him without considering what he does, or WHY they think it's crap.
Josh Groban's discussed the "schmaltz" label too - he thinks "pretty" music seems unchallenging - easy to achieve, not "hard won." So critics won't take such music seriously.
When it comes to real talent, David Foster knows it all. He really knows when a genuine talent is there and with a little magic and help from him. That talent will shine to fame.
David Foster has made music to touch the heart. His music will last forever. We need more of this art. The songs that define my life are tied into his music. Sure hard rock has its place but this is real art. What a wonderful sound.Thank you Canada.
U clearly have no appreciation for music to say something so outlandish.U are just looking for attention from all your negativity.Your 60 years old? well you must of been locked away for most of your life or maybe never heard of him to talk so negative of someone as legendary of Foster in a music perspective.Comparing Miles Davis to Foster is like comparing Lamborghini and Ferrari both appealing and great cars, its a matter of choice and opinion at the end of the day but in your case your biased.
¿You're accusing Foster and you've got "Heavy Metal" scale videos favourited on your account? By the way, it's the typical "learn the scale-ignore music theory" video by a Metallica lover. Yeah, that's the real music, I supose. Please remember Foster hasn't only been producing succesful acts. The man is an amazing MUSICIAN. His music is pop sounding, you may don't like it, but he is really talented producing and arranging the stuff too. Sounding smooth and soft doesn't mean it's crap.
And offending the guy teaching the scale was no way my intention. I only want to make you think about the fact that music can easily fade into non quality music when you're employing one specific scale, or whatever it is for a music style because of some kind of definition like "this is the scale for heavy metal", "this is the scale for blues", "this is the hard rock harmanony: C5, E5....". Looks like music is something like learning how to install software.
I don't owe you any explanation but that video is there because I have severaal guitar students that want an example in that style of music. If I want heavy metal I go to Hendrix or Led Zepp who make most HM players look silly. Why did you pick out the most simple and least of my many videos to pick on? Why not some of the great geniuses? HA, you are a clown...probably don't even know most of them.
Producing "successful acts" means nothing in art; it means you can sell garbage to the masses.
Well said, Smoothness. It seems like a universal argument that I hear many people (musicians and non-musicians alike) debate consistently. The word "scale" and "mode" cause so much confusion (especially "mode"). To me, understanding scales is like understanding where the noun and verb are in a sentence and what their function is in language (music, also being a language). Are there people that communicate thought effectively without knowing how to read, much less how to diagram a ..
.. sentence (ala english in grammar school)? Sure. But, as effectively? Music is a language and I think much can be said about being intimate with the "nuts and bolts" that define a way of communicating through the spoken word or an instrument. Learning "scales" to the beginning music student based on the genre of music they wish to study is kind of like learning all the verb conjugations when first studying Spanish. Although, one must admit that "verb conjugation" is only one ...
..small part of the big picture - just like musical scales - albeit, an important part. Anywhoo, you get my point. Sorry to make three huge postings here:) BTW - I love David Foster, I love what he has done for pop music during the past 3+ decades. He plays and produces with a passion and style that is quickly becoming extinct. His soul and musical prowess is demonstrated exquisitely on Quincy Jones' (James Ingram) "Just Once". Listen to the two piano parts in that song - awesome stuff :)
David is unbelivable have had his CD's forever then noticed he directed CHICAGO....knew he did tons.....saw Foster and friends on PBS a learned and enjoyed it all.
David has been around since before anybody knew who he was, not everything he touched turned gold either, just ask Lisa Debello and many other's, he's always been a poor mans Herbie Hancock, or Quincy Jone's, nothing wrong with his music, it's just kinda old.
This journalist is ridiculous, unrespectful, makes people mad, unconfortable, he makes jokes, laughs at their faces, and he has the gift of being a jerk all the time. The interview is not good, but the person interviewed is.If you get any jerk to talk to Foster, you'll always have something good from this producer because that's his own experience being told, you'll always get a good result. That's what makes the interview good, not this unprofessional stupid journalist. David Foster is great.
This guy David is insane. I just saw his tribute on WLRN Public TV. It is amazing how real he is. Such a celebrity and he seems to get that life is just that fragile and vulnerable. Amazing!!!
David Foster produces the type of music that I like. The key word being there "I", meaning that not everyone likes his music but to call it schmalz is ignorant. They are so many different types of music out there, and not everyone weill be pleased, but we must respect everyone's choices, and not put someone down because they do soemthing we dont agree with.
Chicago was well into the whole "love song" stuff (Colour My World, Just You N Me and If You Leave Me Now) before and certainly well after Foster had left.
Yes. But they weren't making them frequently like they did after Foster took over. the songs started to sound the same. I'm not saying that Foster is a bad producer but I think he should've left Chicago alone and Chicago should've gotten another producer because they were starting to go down hill. Chicago 16 wasn't bad but then 17 ended up more electronic and different.
True, but of course for Chicago 19, Twenty-1, The Heart Of Chicago collections, XXX and so on, the band released nothing but ballads -which as you say, sounded more and more the same. Foster, of course, had nothing to do with them. But Chicago and their management wanted to continue the Foster formula that worked so well on 16 & 17.
I gotta say, this interviewer knows his stuff. Even though he takes a different angle at interviewing, I dig it. He acts like he's having a conversation with a guy he really likes. And I believe everything he says. That's journalism.
I love David Foster because He is friends with Clay Aiken and just a little plug if you haven't heard Clay's new CD "On My Way Here" which is a beautiful put together CD with quite a few songs that can hit you in the heart. Try it you might like it! I hope Clay does go with David Foster!
This man is amazing. Up to now, I had only listened to his music. This interview is quite inciteful into the man. I am very pleased with this because he is a genuine person - he is REAL. Any critic who would attempt to call him a perfectionist would be dead wrong. He loves what he does and appreciates his God-given talent. I have to say that back in my teens and through today, I have always enjoyed his work. It is a shame that age 14 is the "benchmark". Kids don't know GREAT music these days.
Fabulous guy, with a great ear for real music. Won't be surprised if Clay Aiken is in his stable before long. They are close friends, and he has had Clay sing at his galas. He KNOWS a great voice when he hears one. Josh Grobin is another example!
David Foster or anyone that knows him how could I as a music composer with over 120 songs composed, already registered get my songs to be heard by either a record company or an artist. All I here is we don't accept unsolicited music. I am a member of ASCAP, but they don't help either. I know I could try sending my music through a music lawyer to a company, etc. But, which lawyer. David you talk about helping. How about helping unknown composers with potential hits on their hands? Love ya D. F.
98% of the crap on the radio today is trash and that goes for most genres only real music has a purpose, destiny and good message to infuse the listener's heart. I'll never stop doing what I do. Much props to David Foster.
I would`nt say its ALL garbage. First off,it wasnt intended for white mainsteam in the beggining. It was [ ghetto]blacks [the street]talking to one another. Especially the East to West coast., or anyone in between. 2nd ,.it was a way a create their market, that would have been dissinfranchised by the whites. ALL styles come and go. There is severe LACK OF MELODY, for sure. Maybe that will change for the better.
This guy is currently working with Charice Pempengco, an asian girl who once guested on Oprah, Ellen Degeneres and Paul Obrady. Search that girl on youtube and you know why he wants to work with her.
He's one of the greatest producers of all time and although he's a perfectionist, the results speak for themselves. I remember when he was on POPSTARS US in 2001 where Nicole Scherzinger of PCD got her start and when he looked at those girls, he pretty much gave them "You best get this right girl!!." Although Eden's Crush didn't do well, I think that from him, the ladies learned about true professionalism. Also the show didn't kill his marriage, those two brats Brody & Brendan did.
I don't think David is losing anything and it's more rare for him to have a real hit record. It's not your fault David, now most people listen shit music and don't appreciate great music and great musicians like you. Wabbit you have a new friend in Chile, Me!!!
I think it's because they don't know him. because all they play on radio in England is mostly chart stuff and boy boands and all that garbage. bob harris used to do a great show that featured lots of unkown artists, but was canelled, probably because they wanted too appeal to kids who know nothing about real music.
That's too bad. I miss the good music. Very few artists today grab me. I don't like the direction of pop music. It used to be that there was true artistry in a lot of "pop." Now, there is very little, and the record industry promotes this change so they can sell to the masses that don't know anything better. it is really strange, actually. But, when the public hears a great artist, like Eva Cassidy for instance, they DO know she is amazing, when they finally get the chance to hear greatness.
I think it's a case of if you look good on a MTV or whatever, you're in. Who cares if you can actually sing or not? And that is very sad. It also sets a bad example to kids that says you got to look good to be successful, which is appalling. That's why I love Chicago, and Richard Marx so much because they are genuine musicians.Come back, Bob Harris, we need you.
When he lays his hands down on the keyboard...that's just what comes out. I love that he calls himself a CODJERK. No Dear David...YOU are an ARTIST. YOU do what it takes..NANNER TO THOSE WHO DON'T GET IT.
Went to see Buble concert..Found out that Foster was in the house-I watched Foster watch Buble~I LOVE YOU DAVID..SCHMULZ and all. Since I am not a 14 year old pop music fan..I can't say that I love all of the stuff that he may have produced-BUT his EXCELLENCE and GENIUS Is still evident to me. BRAVO. ANY TIME YOU NEED A SINGER..I will bleed for you!
i love him

This guy is the master! Musically, songwriters coming up today don't even have a CLUE how to compose and arrange like these old cats like David Foster. I listen to his stuff and take it apart to see what he's doing.

Thank you David Foster for all the incredible music. I know music is "youth-driven business". I'd prefer to believe it's driven by youthful people. I am so inspired by what happened with Susan Boyle.

I guess that 10% extra is just more Cheese he squeezed out of them.
This guy should burn in hell for producing so much crap.
He doesn't love music, he loves money.
Miles Davis was a musician; Foster is a manipulator of Elevator music to the basement.
His "perfect pitch" is pitching crap.

So sorry for you! Don't get your panties in a twist because someone says the Emperor has no clothes.

Rexicano 3 years ago
U clearly have no appreciation for music to say something so outlandish.U are just looking for attention from all your negativity.Your 60 years old? well you must of been locked away for most of your life or maybe never heard of him to talk so negative of someone as legendary of Foster in a music perspective.Comparing Miles Davis to Foster is like comparing Lamborghini and Ferrari both appealing and great cars, its a matter of choice and opinion at the end of the day but in your case your biased.
Pryncenyck 3 years ago
Blah blah bal;
Actually comparing Foster to Miles is like comparing a paint by number painting to a Picasso.
But thanks for ignorant rant.
And no, I'm not 60...try and read a bit more carefully before you throw another tantrum "Prynce".
I was referring to kurt who lists HIS age as 60.
Rexicano 3 years ago
¿You're accusing Foster and you've got "Heavy Metal" scale videos favourited on your account? By the way, it's the typical "learn the scale-ignore music theory" video by a Metallica lover. Yeah, that's the real music, I supose. Please remember Foster hasn't only been producing succesful acts. The man is an amazing MUSICIAN. His music is pop sounding, you may don't like it, but he is really talented producing and arranging the stuff too. Sounding smooth and soft doesn't mean it's crap.
Smoothness4Music 3 years ago
And offending the guy teaching the scale was no way my intention. I only want to make you think about the fact that music can easily fade into non quality music when you're employing one specific scale, or whatever it is for a music style because of some kind of definition like "this is the scale for heavy metal", "this is the scale for blues", "this is the hard rock harmanony: C5, E5....". Looks like music is something like learning how to install software.
Smoothness4Music 3 years ago
I don't owe you any explanation but that video is there because I have severaal guitar students that want an example in that style of music. If I want heavy metal I go to Hendrix or Led Zepp who make most HM players look silly. Why did you pick out the most simple and least of my many videos to pick on? Why not some of the great geniuses? HA, you are a clown...probably don't even know most of them.
Producing "successful acts" means nothing in art; it means you can sell garbage to the masses.
Rexicano 3 years ago
Well said, Smoothness. It seems like a universal argument that I hear many people (musicians and non-musicians alike) debate consistently. The word "scale" and "mode" cause so much confusion (especially "mode"). To me, understanding scales is like understanding where the noun and verb are in a sentence and what their function is in language (music, also being a language). Are there people that communicate thought effectively without knowing how to read, much less how to diagram a ..
JC10255 3 years ago
.. sentence (ala english in grammar school)?
JC10255 3 years ago
..small part of the big picture - just like musical scales - albeit, an important part.

David Foster is good but he did kinda screwed up Chicago by getting them into that "love song" stuff too much!
mysteryword 3 years ago
Chicago was well into the whole "love song" stuff (Colour My World, Just You N Me and If You Leave Me Now) before and certainly well after Foster had left.
79Saints 3 years ago 2
Yes. But they weren't making them frequently like they did after Foster took over. the songs started to sound the same. I'm not saying that Foster is a bad producer but I think he should've left Chicago alone and Chicago should've gotten another producer because they were starting to go down hill. Chicago 16 wasn't bad but then 17 ended up more electronic and different.
mysteryword 3 years ago
True, but of course for Chicago 19, Twenty-1, The Heart Of Chicago collections, XXX and so on, the band released nothing but ballads -which as you say, sounded more and more the same. Foster, of course, had nothing to do with them. But Chicago and their management wanted to continue the Foster formula that worked so well on 16 & 17.
79Saints 3 years ago
That is true. He started something good but they also did keep the formula for so long that their songs did start to sound alike.

ReeferCity 3 years ago

Love ya D. F.

Also the show didn't kill his marriage, those two brats Brody & Brendan did.

is it because they don't know him, or they just don't like him?
ddviolinist 3 years ago
I think it's because they don't know him. because all they play on radio in England is mostly chart stuff and boy boands and all that garbage. bob harris used to do a great show that featured lots of unkown artists, but was canelled, probably because they wanted too appeal to kids who know nothing about real music.
WABBIT8 3 years ago
That's too bad. I miss the good music. Very few artists today grab me. I don't like the direction of pop music. It used to be that there was true artistry in a lot of "pop." Now, there is very little, and the record industry promotes this change so they can sell to the masses that don't know anything better. it is really strange, actually. But, when the public hears a great artist, like Eva Cassidy for instance, they DO know she is amazing, when they finally get the chance to hear greatness.
ddviolinist 3 years ago
I think it's a case of if you look good on a MTV or whatever, you're in. Who cares if you can actually sing or not? And that is very sad. It also sets a bad example to kids that says you got to look good to be successful, which is appalling. That's why I love Chicago, and Richard Marx so much because they are genuine musicians.Come back, Bob Harris, we need you.
