im proud of germany, my country. we decided too to abolish cluster bombs, now there are artillery pieces that search their targets and dont danger other people.
ICAN works on both the grass-roots public level as well as politically to establish a Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) - a Treaty to outlaw the use or threat of use of nukes, as well as verifiable steps to do so.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon reaffirmed his position that nuclear states should "consider negotiating a NWC, backed by a strong system of verification, as has long been proposed at the United Nations. I have circulated to all UN member states a draft of such a convention."
I totally support this movement. I agree that it's naive to expect politicians to abandon nuclear weapons without any political pressure. But it is civilians that would suffer from nuclear warfare, and it is civilians, not politicians, that must unite and change this dreadful situation.
I agree Nukes are horrible but I think they are a neccassary evil. Nuclear weapons were the reason why we didnt loose 2 million men invading japan home islands and millions more japan civillians. Also Nuclear weapons prevented the superpowers in the cold war from ever going to war. With out nukes we may have lost millions in Ww3 with Russia. Maybe one day we wont need nukes(I hope)...But I think we have a better chance of finding santa in the north pole.
wow this was probably the dumbest video..abloishing nukes will never happen and the U.N. cant do nothing at all because they are a bunch of pussys..the most worthless group of people ever come to reality people these peace things doo nothing just because they say there are some nukes banned doesnt mean they still dont make them its a cover up
Abolishing them is the goal. I don't recall hearing anything about it actually happening. Humans are too evil. We live in a World of "getting even", and everybody wants to be able to "strike back". Two wrongs never make a right. If somebody were to kill a loved one, would it make it right to kill them? Absolutely not, because then you are just like them... Think about it. If a country nuked us, WHAT good would it do to nuke em' back? Then we would all just be dead. Dumb? Hardly.
But the abolishment of nukes will never happen because, like you said, people are too evil. In the ideal world they'd all be gone, but there's always going to be at least one country that won't get rid of them, so everyone else will keep theirs too.
Which proves my point. It WOULD be the right thing to do, get rid of all nuclear weapons... Polititians aren't known for clear judgement... hint hint. I have had a recurrent nightmare about a nuclear fallout. I see a blinding light, and I can't find my daughter, when I find her, her eyes are white, I ask her, can you see? Why can't you see? She says, mommy, nobody can see.... We should all have dreams like that, maybe then, the possibility could be reality.

Hey we all have nightmares...Its how you deal with them...What are you gonna do if an asteroid land on Earth and kills us all...Whats your daughter going to say then...Mommy I can't move because I'm dead!
The use of thermonuclear weapons could mitigate global warming (nuclear winter) and human overpopulation by selective targeting and strategic surgery.
Where the hell has my comment gone. I can't even remember what I wrote. I will say that it won't have been racist or full of hate, so why can't I read it. There are some real pathetic people putting thumbs down on very valid points out there!!
We are the majority who demand all nuclear weapons be eliminated from our planet.
We have accepted the delaying and denying of politicians and generals for decades, and have lost faith in our own ability to determine our political fate.
I ask everyone to regain that democratic faith- consider the sadomasochism of nuclear weapons, and help eliminate them, by campaigning against them on local and national levels, and by inviting your friends& workmates to show democracy with rallies and petitions.
@culchasampla why are you worried about radation we will be all dead and its getting closer we will never abloish nuclear weapons you didnt stop the big ones land mines are still used as well as cluster bombs you cant stop them
I believe that the only solution in the future would be a single world-wide super government, for instance the U.N, taking absolutely control of every single nation in the world.
There may always be war/conflict amongst human kind but it needn't risk our entire planet - everything we have, everything we have ever fought for, all living things, all future generations.

"Are you so blind about world politics that you are ignoring the pressure between North Korea, Iran and USA?"
N-Korea or Iran weill never shoot nukes to USA. Why? becos they know that revenge would come under 30min. And that war would not destroy world even if it would be nuke war.
"Are you ignoring the fact that over 100 nuclear weapons and many nuclear materials have gone missing in the eastern europe area?"
I'm aware of that. Still 100 nukes are not enough to destroy humanity.
You are foolish. The nuclear radiation that would be released into the ozone and atmosphere simultaneously would melt the polar ice caps and flood countries sitting on seaboards, and would kill off people and wildlife. Stop being so ignorant and wake up. Do you want to die? Do you really care whether you see that bright flash then suddenly feel your skin melting off , or die instantly if you're lucky enough.
I can't believe you have no care for any of this, and dont want to stop it. It's because of people like you, who are satisfied with the way the world is, who are the reason the world is in the painful state it is now.
"I'm aware of that. Still 100 nukes are not enough to destroy humanity." It is enough to destroy humanity. It will kill most of the people, and for those who are left will either die of radiational/nuclear purposes. And don't forget about the environment.
"The cold, the dark and the intense radioactivity, together lasting for months, represent a severe assault on our civilization and our species. Civil and sanitary services would be wiped out. Medical facilities, drugs, the most rudimentary means for relieving the vast human suffering, would be unavailable." - Carl Sagan.
If you look into the long-term effects of even a 'small' nuclear exchange, they are horrifying.
"Except for fools and madmen, everyone knows that nuclear war would he an unprecedented human catastrophe. A more or less typical strategic warhead has a yield of 2 megatons, the explosive equivalent of 2 million tons of TNT. But 2 million tons of TNT is about the same as all the bombs exploded in World War II -- a single bomb with the explosive power of the entire Second World War but compressed into a few seconds of time and an area 30 or 40 miles across" - Carl Sagan
Nuclear weapons are a weapon of national wars. As long as there is a condition of anarchy between nation-states, as Einstein so often wrote, there will be wars AND they will be fought with nuclear weapons. Thus, ther word "abolish" is irrelevant to this problem. WAR ITSELF MUST BE OUTLAWED! AND ONLY A WORLD GOVERNMENT OF, BY AND FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE WORLD CAN LEGISLATE THE CONDITIONS OF PEACE, I.E. WORLD LAW!

This is the campaign we win in order to save all others: the climate, the whales, the forests, health care, famine, human rights, industries...
We have no other option.
It is indeed naive in the extreme to believe that we may live with such a threat hanging over us all, and without our choosing.
A Nuclear Weapons Convention - a Model of which is finally tabled with the UN - is a great, sane and long overdue and crucial step forward.

They said same in 70's.")
Well, we've come very close to nuclear war on several documented occasions and the thing is we have one option only: prevention.
It's also another, most sudden potential climate change risk, from just a fraction of today's 27,000 nukes.
How dare they.
And how dare we accept it.

What is even more terrifying is that the majority of nuclear and atomic weapons are much greater then 2 megatons.
