I read Runnin Wild by David Sten over 20 years ago, and once saw him at a 1920s film event and asked him about the idea of a film of her life, he was interested in this but I have heard nothing about him getting this off the ground.
It is time a good film was made about real Hollywood lives and the true stars' origins in the 20s. Her life would be perfect for this- if the right actress could be found.
my favorite actress of all time.. bar none... she was treated like crap at Paramount but still managed to be a #1 box office star from 1926-1930. They should have given her better roles like Barbara Stanwyck roles but she was so burned out.. She just said screw you Hollywood and never came back. I wish she would have lived longer(died in 1965) to have written her autobiography or least been interviewed. She was so unique.
Thankfully i now understand why she wasnt in Hollywood on Parade 8A/8A thanks for uploading this. So paramount canceled her contract due to her life problems. now i know why they were using a waxwork figure of her. although her husband Rex Bell was allowed in the paramount short.
26 years old and she was retired and no longer useful. Pathetic. Attitudes can still be the same when it comes to age and being put out to pasture. Women are called Cougars nowadays when they hit 30. WTF???!!!!
Lovely Clara Bow !!!...what Energy!....what Vivaciousness!....she was Sweetness personified....the demise of her career and mental health is a tragedy....if Schulberg had maintained his support for his top Star she would probably have pulled through....much love to you Dear Lady of the silver screen....you are in our hearts, always !!!
I Love Her! What I most love about her that she was a tomboy, She was the First Great actress of the movies, I love her voice, can't help but think what if she was around today, what great roles would she have and how any oscar's to her name : )
the doc isn't exactly correct- before "Hoop-La", her real comeback had been "Call Her Savage", a great pre-code drama with one of Clara's most memorable performances, which did big business in the major urban markets. Clara was still a star...
I feel bad for her! I love her so much it's not fair what happened... but what is fair in life? I love her voice too!!! It matched her acting to a T! I know some ppl think it should've been soft and girlish but she was wild and it just said she'd been a tom boy ... it was her perfectly!!! Clara was sooo pretty ^^ She must be the reason I like Betty boop lol
What a revelation these clips are of a "silent" actress.
In comparison to much of the silent 20's stiff posturing, she is natural and refreshing. As well, despite expectations that her voice should have been soft, I find her voice an extension of her acting style - instinctive... and it seems she knew IT too.
It's unfortunate that she did not continue. Thankyou Goldenageofcinema for sharing.
Thank you for this! Im am curently reading her bio- "Runnin' Wild" I felt so bad for her, all the scandels, her life in Brooklyn, but Im so glad she met Rex Bell. I Love Clara!! Thanks again!! I enjoyed this!!!
Bow is amazing need more of her film DVDs around the system back then was crap to put it nicely,to be fair they only just started out hollywood clara was like the first hollywood starlet there was the first sex simbol. nowadays actors have agents, back then actors like singers were signed to a movie compaine (clara louise was paramont) so they got what ever films the campine had around bette davis was the same with warner brothers not enough good films kathrine hedburn has nothing on her.
I totally agree with Modguy61 and tonyvillecco. The system completely screwed her and Louise Brooks. At least Louise was able to break free and go to Europe. Poor Clara.
Clara's voice matched her personality. What the hell did the studio want?

Now you know where Liza Minnelli got her "look" for the part of Sally Bowles in movie Cabaret.

Two of the genuine female Stars of the silent era are Clara & Louise. You only need mention their first names to know whom you are talking about.
True stars, they will never be forgotten!
Great Post! ~Thanks.

When I first heard her voice I was a bit surprised... I kind of expected a softer more feminine voice. But she was lovely all the same.
